they are INTERNAL measurements so add 18mm each side (for the MDF or 15 if you're using that)

thats the recommended sealed size for your sub!

Cheers again for that ^ I read it too late though and had allready cut my wood by which time I realised I hadn't added 18mm to accomodate the wood. BALLS!

Alpine are one of the best out there, id deffo go for Alpine if i had the cash to do my car there pure quality! Why totally slate someone on here that is just trying to give advice? Children.

Like I said, Alpine do some very very good kit. They certainly arent the be all and end all of car audio but they do some really ranges.

HOWEVER, the guy clearly has no idea what he is on about. if you read the whole thread through you will see that from start to finish every element of acky's system has been considered carefully according to his needs.

firstly polo-mads reccomendation is to ditch this carefully thought out system on ebay- mistake number one.

second- he says to go for a set of 6x9's (presumably on rear shelf as he has mentioned components as well) 6x9 on the rear shelf do NOT fit into the SQ catagory of audio in that arrangement PERIOD- given thats what Acky asked for the suggestion is plain wrong.

third- the bit that gets my goat. to say that his system has been measured at 187db is a outright LIE.

Someone trying to bullshit another person into buying kit on the basis of it being a lie? Sounds like he deserves to be laid into. I've been nothing but helpful up until that point anyway- ces't la vie.

back on topic for a second, head units under £500, foxie suggestion of the becker is a pretty decent one, although with £500 you can get a REALLY awesome unit if you go second hand.

dont be fooled, it might look basic but its a ultra high end SQ tuner, the UK equivalent of the above retailed for approx £600 in its day. Carrozeria is the hi end japanese equivalent to pioneer over here.

another one that you would be very hard pushed to find better units in terms of pure SQ. 24 bit burr brown DACS (digital/analogue convertors) I wont mention who but i know one person in particular who went from a £2000 cd unit to this in a demo car and prefered this one. it wasnt in a cheap audio system either. car had in excess of £10K worth of install in it. well under budget at the price as well. will end up going at about £150-£200.

very underated unit in my opinion. has a whole host of features and has more tweakability that a tweaky thing with lots of tweaky knobs on it! very cool and sounds breathtaking. highly accurate.

it might be a sony, but this is when sony made REAL audio. possibly one of the best head units ever produced in terms of SQ. you would need to go international on this one but bare in mind UK retail on this when it was released about 5 years back was £1000!!!!! going rate on them second hand for a minter is still about £300

There is a reason i have chosen to recommend more pioneer units over the alpine is simple- its due to the kit you already have. I have a gut feeling that with an alpine unit things may begin to sound a little clinical. its just the nature of a lot of alpines whilst they are deadly accurate they occasionally lose some of the feeling to music. Its not that i dont like alpine (heck I have a IVA-D310RB in the car myself!!) but for your purposes I'm not convinced it will be the right choice.

What you have to remember Acky is that at this point things start to become very subjective, as i said before you may prefer a different type of sound to other people, only way to know for sure is to go and audition a few systems/head units.

for what its worth from the above list my order of preference would be:

sony c90

alpine 7969

pioneer deh-77mp

did consider them, but as good as they sound, the reliability of them has always been an issue. As much I love the sound of them I would never own a second hand nak, they were bad enough for breaking when they were brand new!

I cant view ebay at work... wish I could the days would go so much quicker.

Just the internal volume. you can have it whatever shape you want (near enough) so long as the airspace inside is the same.

you running them off your vw headunit? a rough budget? theres pretty much no point running them from the vw headunit, there will be a bit of a change in sound but not much, best off gettin a new headunit with some power behind it, or better still an external amp.

i cut a hole in my roof and did that with my sub.....my car acts like a box, its amazing!!!! and if you want to go ported, just open the window

she does the job. has leather and climate as well. Not sure how much longer i will keep her though. I need something a bit bigger now. The other pain in the ass is that really polo's are pretty crap in terms of doing a really decent ice install. Barely enough room for kicks, cabin acoustics seem worse than most other small hatches and sod all boot space.

I'm thinking a golf next. took a 1.8 20v turbo out last night on the M1 and was quite surprised how decent they are. considering one of those next, either in petrol or diesel, haven't decided.

not really, occasionally you need to switch the phase on the sub (i.e. wire it the wrong way round - to + and + to - ) on the speaker terminal otherwise it can sound slightly out of sync, but not really a issue at all.

Makes no difference how irregular the box is really so long as its in a sealed enclosure and it really is SEALED properly. (silicon sealant on box joins and resin to ensure its air tight.)

It would probably make a difference in a ported enclosure though- but again how much of a difference and in what way would depend on a number of factors (sub TS parameters, box volume, port tuning, single chamber, bandpass blah blah etc.)

rather you than me!! i dont think you know just how much work that involves!!!

a square box can be knocked up in a couple of hours. or even a fiberglass box with a flat face or two can be done with maybe 3-4 hours work.

the last spherical enclosure i saw built took two professionals 26 hours to build!!!

i was half joking, i have no reason to make a spherical enclosure, maybe a hexagon tho.....??

Turned the system all the way to the max the other day to show a mate, it working fine then the sub cut out, I shit myself and turned it down though I had done some damage, but then as I turned it back up the sub was working again.

Is it becuase there wasnt enough juice from the battery to supply both the amps so the compenents sucked it all up like a pro pornstar giving head?

hmm yeah... something doesnt sound right..

it seems like an earth problem..........
