I'm a Ford guy and had a MK6 Fiesta for over 2 years and loved it. But yeh. Both good cars. The civic is a bit faster as far as i know.

Got to admit the mk6 fiesta is not a bad looking car my friend has one. They do seam to be improving the new focus looks quite nice too. But like I said I'm biased haha so haven't considered them. But tbh It doesn't really matter If I was him I'd be getting another volkswagen anyway :)

Buy a 9N polo 1.9 gt TDi it will be capable of far more power than the fiesta and will probably last longer too

I share a fiestia zetec s diesel with the mrs and its brill. Not fast but its got a bit of a kick to it, mpg is great, £30 a year tax, barely anything to ensure and looks great.

Go for one with a few extras (electric folding mirrors, aux input, auto lights and wipers etc) and you have a very well speced car.

Sod getting an EP3 Sport. If the guy wants a newer car then the Fiesta would be the option. I've got an Astra estate at the moment with the 2.0 16v ecotec lump in it, the cam position sensor is fucked in it so the limiter cuts in at 4500 rpm... and it's still quicker than a Civic Sport above 70 mph (anything below that is unfair haha coz i need to change into 4th before 70)

Admittedly straight line performance isn't everything. EP3s in any guise handle pretty competently. Boring inside, crap seats, but oh well.

Fiesta is the way forward in this case. It's a modern Ford which means it will go round corners reasonably well, be quite economical, cheap to insure, cheap to fix, etc etc.

A lot of new car interiors are tacky. Must be the sort of plastic they use now, looks awful.
