I reckon I've been pretty lucky thus far actually. (Apart from breaking the front far side spring on my dads Punto >.>)

Mincing it around as soon as youve passed is always going to cause problems. Lucky no-one was coming the other way.

But atleasy you know your limits, and hopefull you wont go braking them agian

I've had the few minor mistakes in my first year of driving, but its another driver that cause me to have a big accident.

Made me realise expect the unexpected where ever your driving.

The main thing is that you've learnt your lesson, and also it wasn't anything too bad

I had a fairly bad crash and I certainly learnt my lesson!

I know myself I used to drive to fast, and now I don't know how or why I did it, I get scared going half the speed I used to in places

same as me had a nasty crash and my ass goes 50p 5p 50p 5p everytime i hit the loud pedal but I'm glad i was lucky and got a second chance

As some of said on here that most of us have had an accident big or small and some have learnt from the experience and others obviously not ,its only when you read stories about innocent people getting caught up in someone elses moment of madness that we should try and put yourselves in those peoples shoes .

Cars are dangerous weapons and we are accountable for our own actions ,I'm sorry about the rant but 2 yrs ago one of our pupils at the school i work at got killed by someone who was showing off as he had just passed and as a result he lost control and ploughed into a group of kids on their way home .

Well done to you for bringing to light your experience and hopfully happy and safe motoring for the future

Same here! Nearlys scare me enough to make me learn a lesson.

Had a few close shaves but always learned from them, my worst was about a month after passing, I left school one afternoon went down the drive onto the main road and booted it away (mate was following me) up to speed (60 limit back then), there was diesel all over the bend :( controlled it and ended up perfectly parallel parked on the wrong side of the road, having done what looked like a perfect handbrake turn, teacher shouting that i was speeding etc despite plenty of witnesses that I wasnt.

The best part was a week later the same teacher left school like a tool got to the bend and went straight through the hedge.

I ran over 2 baby dear in a pick up truck whilst doing a delivery for work :( was devistated...

I think this thread has worked well then :) Hope some new drivers arnt as ignorant as me to ignore it.

Another reason to not drive like a tit is that the N/S/F wheel bearing is getting louder, Hopefully will last til payday!

I wouldn't advise anyone not to bray their car really, but to just try and stick to doing it when there is no one about and you have plenty of road. I always do a little risk asessment in my head, 'what if?'. If you are clever you can still push your car to the limits without risking much more than your car.

Another thing to bear in mind is bikers, you might think you can see far enough to overtake a wagon on a big country road, but if a biker is coming the other way at 100+mph for instance, then there is a problem.

A mate of mine is always on the wrong side of the road when he thinks he can see far enough ahead to make it safe, but as a biker I cringe.

Very true, your imagination will do a much better job at teaching you a lesson than an accident will. I beleive that the authorities should warn people using the same logic. Fake speed camera's and things like that.

First accident for me involved only me thankfully. 3 weeks after passing my test, in our old 'red shed' (82 bready), going round a roundabout, it had been raining earlier so the road was slippy (had been dry for a week before) and lost it on the roundabout and ended up upside down on the verge :( the rolling felt like the slowest time of my life! I wasn't even going fast either.

Never again have I gone anywhere near the limit when theres a roundabout near

As Tommo said, Think first, yes I like to have a bit of fun on the way home from work, but I only do so when there is noone near me, if I am getting near other cars, I slow down. I don't care if I bin my car, but I do care if I take someone else out because of my stupidity.

My mate did this 3 weeks after passing his test on some b road.

Him and the passenger got out alive (just) but that stopped me ever driving like a dick, especially seeing what happens to a similar age vw.

Nah no Veilside or Brembo ha, was completely standard, but he drove it like a racing car, I was just waiting for him to crash it really.

i only stuck one sticker that was a brand name on my first car that was a weber one after i put a weber on it

I'm still in my first year of driving, but from the 5000 miles I've done, I can say it's the "nearly.."'s that scare you straight the most.

Few months back I was taking a mate out to his relative's place out in the country, the entire road there and back was fun road to drive and he warned me about any bits that might catch me out.

Of course I started getting a bit quicker the second or third time we drove on the road and had an "oshi" moment when panic-breaking for a (very) hard right onto a bridge, locked up all four tyres but luckily my brain started working long enough to unlock them and threshold brake to avoid hitting a pillar by inches.

Another nearly was over-estimating my front wheel's ability to grip in slush and ending up moving at exactly half of fuck all across a 3 lane roundabout with a big rig barreling towards me.

I crashed about a month and a half after passing. My mate passed 2 weeks after I did, so he had only been driving about a month, we were going down a relatively wide national limit road at about 50, 2.30 in the morning so very dark. Then a rabbit ran out and lets just say the brakes in his Corsa C were a bit better than my 6n's and I slid into the back of him. If we went through insurance it would have written both cars off, as it is I ended up paying for everything haha.

Strangely enough though, its near misses that have made me learn more than that crash. Still have one every so often, like the other night i was going round a fairly tight downhill corner at 50ish and didn't expect a car to be sat in the middle of the road. Had no choice but slam on the brakes, back end came round and i did what felt like a perfect drift round the corner lol. Scared the shit out of me, and reminded me I need to get my ABS sensors sorted as the rear discs on my ibiza are pretty savage in the wet.

There's a lane by me that is now called 'rabbit lane' because I drove up there and nearenough 30 rabbits run across at the same time. 'aaarrggghhhh!!!! Drove straight through. Wasn't any blood or rabbit on my car when I got home so I they go lucky I guess.

RANT. new drivers seem to forget to put their lights on. They're not just for you to see, they're for you to be seen too!! And the 2 second rule in the dry, 4 seconds in the wet, 10 seconds in snow and ice.

Sliproads are for getting to motorway speed before you get to the motoway!!

I'm just listing things that most drivers forget.
