Not much of an update but i got her turning over today! Got me excited.

Also, quick question, for a five speed conversion do you have to change the tub that the actual gear lever sits in? As mine isn't removable so if I have to change it ill have to cut it out.

Thoughts?

Ended up going to my first real meet near heathrow last night, didnt have my car but was still really good!

Got me itching for a bit of stance though, I've never really been into it but some of the cars there looked awesome and when i imagine the mk2 with a really nice stance it gets me all excited.

This then led to me thinking about different wheels and stuff (even though these haven't turned under the cars power yet lol) and i guess for a bit of stance you need a profile under something like say 50? And with a bit of width. So this got me back on the idea of running 15's

I've been back and forth with 15's and I'm still not sure so what does everyone think? Made me wonder why you dont see many mk2s stanced out, shocking suspension design possibly?

In terms of project progress, i have fuel, i have a spark and pretty much everything is hooked up apart from the top and bottom rad hoses (as i dont have them) so its getting there now!

Just needs timing up and then its time to let her rip! Or break down, probably the latter....

Thoughts on mk2s on 15's....

I'm about to fit some 15x8's on my mk2 bready just gotta get tyres on the new rims that turned up today at work gunna post pics up later just tried them on the car with wood underneath to see where they sit arch wise and it looks good well in my opinion lol

nice build thread so far hurry up and get it running yeah

Well, 195/45 15s are almost bang on the same size as 155/70 13's so shouldn't be an issue unless you're gay and like stretch.

I dont mind a bit of stretch, having it on my own car could be another matter though..

I think ill have to get wider wheels anyway as there is no way you can space mine out the desired amount, there just too skinny, and I'm yet to see a mk2 on 15's that i like (sorry to all of those who have put pics up).

Ill keep an eye out.

Update on the car, I'm back home from uni now until monday to work on the car so hopefully progress will be made!

In the meantime, anyone know where the fuel inlet is on a pierburg 2e?

Thanks.

Right...the trouble continues.

Was hoping to to have her running tonight, and very nearly did! Hooked up all the ignition wiring and roughly timed it, made all the wiring neat and tidy, manually pumped the fuel pump, no problems, fuel was going through so ready to fire her up!

Was trying to go but was just falling short so we took the rocker cover off and then we realised.........

My Newman fast road cam has not been machined to run a mechanical fuel pump! NOOOOOOOO, i was so close! After a year and a half of blood sweat and tears, I'm going to have to wait a little bit longer.

So i guess I'm going to have to run an electric fuel pump, which ill have to get for bike carbs anyway so its not the end of the world. I have to get a new rubber mount for my pierburg 2e as well as it wasnt in quite as good a condition as the seller said :x 45 quid thank you very much!

So yea, I'm going to have to find out a bit more info on the fuel pumps others run on here and where to get them so can anyone shed any light on this?

My mate is researching motorcycle fuel pumps as well as i may be able to run a zxr400 pump which is obviously designed for bike carbs so will run well with the carbs when i have them on. Ill put more info on this when i have it as it may be a cheaper option to the pumps others run.

Will hopefully be running soon! Watch this space....

Is there any way of running a rear disc set up on these? And will it make much of a difference?

I've got some vwII calipers but I've lost the discs i bought! Cant believe it, brembo ones as well! Need some of the metal sliders as well, they want 5 quid each at vw! 20 quid in total for 4 sliders....

Managed to adjust the gear linkage today so now i can get alllll five gears! Made me very happy, its the lil things...

Will be running next week, i know it!

Also, as i said in my previous post, i need to get a electric fuel pump. I'm planning on running bike carbs using the t piece method so i dont need to buy a regulator but if I'm running the electric fuel pump with the standard carb, will i need a regulator?

Thanks.

good read mate, lvoe your efforts. I was looking into doing a 4 wheel disc conversion, but tbh, from what I've read/heard I wouldnt bother. Apparently very hard to get the bias right, and can make the back end very twitchy due to the lack of weight over the back.

I'm running standard brakes on my 'loon (my daily is an RS 197 with brembo 4 pots lol!), and once you get used to pushing the pedal a bit harder, they work :)

I do have a set of AP Racing active 4 pots to go on the fron of the polo though, and I intend on still using the standard drums at the back.

Look forward to seeing more how you get on

Rob :)

i converted the rear of mine to discs and i must say it looks alot better and i could feel the difference but thats what i wanted cost me quite a bit and dont know whether the cost outweighs what they do but i love them.

Thanks for the replies, think I'll leave the rear discs for a while.

People who are running electric fuel pumps, where do you wire it up to?

As far as I'm aware, you can either wire in a switch to turn it on/off, or wire it into the ignition when you turn the key.

I was going to have a toggle switch (jet fighter style haha) because it seems easiest, and I'm also childish lol

dudeeee, there's a how to thread on wiring pumps up to the ignition, check it.

Also, if you get rid of your wheels, gimme a shout. Still after your weber too by the way.

Give me a yell if you want a hand, I'm ill today so cant help today but maybe over the weekend depending how I'm feeling.

good luck!

Thanks for the replies, managed to get the pump wired in in the end. I'm so crap with electronics.

After wiring it in, went to start it up and found fuel was pissing out of the accelerator pump. turns out that this carb isnt in the condition i was told by the seller, cheers. Seem to get a lot of that on here. I've bought so much stuff from here and a large percentage of it has not been accurately described.

Anyway, yea fuel was pissing out and you cant buy an accelerator pump diaphragm seperately so I've had to buy a full re build kit for 40 quid.. Was pissed off at first but at least this way the carb will be working 100% and I wont have to worry about it. Ill be running it for a few months at least, until i get bike carb stuff sorted.

So yea, kit has been ordered, should be here monday, ill be back from uni on thursday morning to fit it all (do i need any gasket sealant) then all i need to do is get someone round to do the ignition timing for me!

I also changed the gear changer assembly (stick, cup, everything) as my old one was quite loose. Seems to have tightened it up nicely. I have noticed though that a little bit of oil seems to have gathered and dripped off the rod that slides in and out of the gearbox, is this normal? Ill keep a close eye on oil levels..

Getting closer! Ill upload a video when its running, ill probably be dancing/ crying for joy in the background..

Carb kit has just this second turned up! Ill try and get it on today!

I wrote the guide on fitting a facet - it's in the faq

and your last pic above of the swirl pot - the top is fuel in, middle hose is return to tank, and bottom goes to carb. although it looks like your bottom outlet is broken off?

Update: she started for the first time on Saturday! I got the rebuild kit through earlier than expected, fitted the accelerator pump diaphragm and she went! Was sooo happy!

Didn't idle though, it's not fully timed up and I've got a few air leaks to get rid of but other than that she's nearly there. Just sucks that I'm back at uni so I'm splitting my time between the two at the moment. I'm back in Bournemouth on Thursday to carry on with it so I'll update with progress then.

Few other bits in the pipeline too :) exciting times.

HAS ANYONE GOT A 1300 MK2 AIRBOX THEY WANT TO SELL/ GIVE ME?

I thought it would be really easy to track one down, apparently not...

i do

Just got one sorted today.

Thanks anyway pal.

really glad you got it running mate, if your still stuck by friday/weekend i can borrow a gun from work, you should be able to roughly set it up by ear though for now if needs be. Good luck with getting it running smooth mate :)

Thanks a lot bud. My mate is coming over Friday with the strobe to do it but its pretty good where it is at the mo. When its running, retarding or advancing it makes it die so its as good as it can be by eye. I'm getting some sealant to seal the carb up today so hopefully it will run a bit better.

Will be running by tomorrow night if all goes well!

I'll let you know Adam if I need a hand. Could do with some help getting the cd player working!

Ahhhh, the saga continues.

First i lost one of the bolts that holds the carb onto the flange so i had a huge air leak, but thankfully my mate managed to find it. Fitted that, sealed it all up and left it to cure.

Come to start it up and its going reasonably. Kind of running off choke, the rev rise and fall a bit but then after a rev sometimes it flattens out, not all the time though. But yea, seems to tick over ok. Then went for a bit of a test drive, literally 1 minute down the road to check tyre pressures and stuff. I turned it off, did pressure then went to turn it back on and it was running off the battery then cut out. Went to turn it over and nothing. I'm thinking flat battery right?

Call in the cavalry, get the jump leads on and still.....nothing!

So now its sat down at the garage probably getting broken into.

Getting really tired of this, its just bad news constantly and then the moment i think I'm making a tiny bit of progress, it turns around and shoots me back down. Bloody money pit...

Anyone got any ideas? Surely if there was a problem with the battery it would start under the power of being jumped?

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH....that is all...

UPDATE.

Found the problem to be the solenoid in the starter motor. Had a spare one in the garage, fitted it and all fine!

So that means its going! I drove it up to uni today and all went reasonably well. Its running a bit rich which i guess is why it used a lil bit more fuel than i was hoping but apart from that it went ok.

Only problems are-

Revs are up and down while ticking over..

At part throttle pulling away in 1st and 2nd its quite lumpy/ jerky. (Like when moving in slow traffic)

Idles quite fast but I'm guessing i just need to adjust the idle speed screw.

Main question though is this

ON A PIERBURG 2E3, WHICH DIRECTION DO I TURN THE MIXTURE SCREW TO MAKE IT LEANER?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ill try and get a vid up soon, its so bloody loud, even with a standard exhaust. Just wait until i get a stainless system on it!

Bit of an arty shot for now...

Had a word with my mate that helped me build the engine and he said that the lurching may be down to the facet pump kicking out too much pressure and its overwhelming the floats. So I've ordered a pressure regulator tonight that will hopefully solve this problem. Will help when I get bike carbs on it as well!

Caaaant wait to get bike carbs on it, getting too used to the power already. Need a stainless exhaust for it as well so if anyone is selling one, hit me up!

If all your ignition components are in good condition, then the jerkyness will be a lean mixture or an air leak. I'm currently working on a custom airbox design for a double choke weber dcd, have you got any further with making yours? I'm needing equations for volume and inlet diameter etc.
