Traffic calming measures on open safe roads,gridlocked cities due to the roads being littered in traffic lights etc,crazy fuel prices double (and in some cases triple) that Americans enjoy,aggressive company car drivers in Audis..

Yeah there's much going on. You have no idea how much clearer the roads were in the early 90s,though that's gonna be much to do with my town growing so densely.

Do i still love driving? Hell yeah! Its not much fun in the frustrating 207 diesel,and the 306 2.0 16v cab lures me too aggressive for my liking because it just wants to go fast without reward.

But in the Polo,wow the little go-kart makes every mile special,slow or fast. Makes every mile an event. Seems nothing can dampen it (but for the DVLA's attempts to make it harder and harder for me to run it legally).

getting the bus is a lot like catching syphilis, most of the time both wont hurt you but won't announce either in public.

I cannot see petrol prices reducing this government as like the other are just driving motorist off the road whether its through taxation or through speed cameras etc etc .Where i live they have spent the last 6 months supposedly improving the roads in and around southend but made the whole thing worse with putting in traffic lights every 400 yrds .

I don't agree with the idea that government is trying to tax us off the road. That would be a disaster for them as it makes them so many billions a year. They know full well that we won't leve our cars, and I doubt they even want us too. What they want is to seem all green by promoting public transport, fuel tax etc and safety conscious with the amount of cameras. What they know however is that we won't stop using our cars, but happily take it up the chuff everytime we fill up. It matters not to the government where we spend our money. If we pay more for fuel, that just means a saving some place else, food for hungry (obese?) kids for example. They damn well know that by increasing duty they will still make money from it. It's not like putting up prices on luxury items, it has now become a necessity, like food, electricity and water. The principle is the same with water and electricity companies. If they put up prices what are people going to do? Stop drinking and staying warm? Fuel is just the same as there is no alternative

Used to deliver for Dominos in my bready, racked up the miles and got paid badly, but i wouldn't mind aproper driving job!

I have been driving for 47 years and still enjoy driving. The first gallon of petrol that I bought was 4/11 (thats just shy of 25p in 'new' money). However,to put in perspective, I was earning £5.00 per week plus my board and lodging at the time as an apprentice mech.

On Sunday I put some diesel in my Landrover. £1.46 a litre!!! When I retired in October2010, I could do all my running around in the Landy for £20 per week. Now it's costing £30. The prices are going up as afst as they did in 1972 at the height of the Arab crisis. The media appears tobe blaming the Libyan civil war for this vast hike in fuel prices, but, as Libya only supplies 2% of the word's supply and Saudi Arabia has increased production to compensate, some-one must be making some serious money somewhere!

Why am I driving the Landy more than my breadie these days? Well I own a couple of horses and have to go over to feed them and generally deal with them every day. And yes, folks, I still ride and thoroughly enjoy it. Do some horse driving too.

I still use the breadie whenever I can - shopping. visiting the kids etc.etc. That's not so sad as it sounds. My nearest supermarket that's any good is 30 miles away - either Oswestry or Wrexham and the kids live in Oswestry and Telford respectively. I miss just going out for a trundle though.

I'm lucky when it comes to insurance. Insured the breadie for £68.00 this year. However, just bought another breadie for my nephew. He's 30 and passed his test 2 years ago. He's been quoted £739.00 for a 1,05 litre motor. And we are told that motor insurance will rise again this year because of the alleged 30,000 people who stage accidents to make false claims every year!

I think I must have made a wrong career choice. I should hvae been a banker. Then I could have made a huge cock-up of everyone's life by gambling with thier money on dodgy American investments, retired on my multi-million pound bonuses and never had to worry about insuring or putting fuel in the 911 Turbo (for everyday) the Rangerover ( for going to seehow someone else is looking after my race horses) or the Bentley (for being a rich plonker) ever again!

That insurance quote isnt "bad" realy I payed about £3200 insurance for a newer 1litre polo when i passed.

Nice to see the older generation using this forum and caring about there little mk2, instead of scrapping it for a fiat panda

Thank you for your comment and no, I wouldn't scrap it for anything. During the scrappage scheme, I wandered into the VW agents in Redditch (I was working up there 2 days a week at the time) for some bits and was pounced upon by an enthusiastic salesman who had seen me pull up and wanted me to p/ex my car for a new one. I let him chunter on for a bit and then pointed out that the new car did nothing that my old car couldn't do and had the two distinct disadvantages of (a) costing me £8K to do the deal and (b) I wouldn't be able to maintain it myself.

Yes, I have loads of stories about the Polio (as the family call it - cos they think it's soooo slow!) Like the time I uprooted a 'Bad Bend' sign skidding on black ice one morning. Damn near wrote the car off and it took me 3 weeks to put it back together again, and the time I broke a piston ring on the motorway and used the best part of a gallon of oil to get the 80 miles home. But I suspect we are a bit "off piste" here. Might start a new thread in the Polo Chat section though. What d'you think chaps (and chapesses)?
