Mk3 topmounts question.

Featured Replies

il get the number off mine tonight.

its not masking anything. i bought genuine VAG ones and my car sank on them without turning a wheel as it was garaged in around 3months! its just there design. you know when your top mounts are knackered as you can rock the shock and feel it. by shortening the cap you are stopping the shock dropping when you come off a speedbump or over a hump back bridge- thus making it safer by ensuring the suspension is attached better to the car. even with them being shallower caps they still do not touch the top of the chassis/ turret.

Thanks mate!

Yea I am told that in the VW service manual for older Polos it states that this gap is normal and part of the design. I guess to allow the mounts to absorb shocks/bumps? MOT testing should pick up on an excessively worn mount by rocking the wheel back and forth as youngprodigys says...

any luck finding a p/n?

it looks like #32 on this (1994 Audi 80):

but I might be wrong...

it is 32 on that diagram, but i cannot find a part number on the top mount piece. I've not been on my pc so i cant have a proper look.

the rubber bit to fit round it (replacing the hard plastic one) has the number 6N0 412 319.

Mine lasted the whole of 10 mins, dropped the car off the jack, caps sitting nicely, drove over the small (2") wooden step of the garage and pop. huge gap returns.

Shit happens in wales fella :)

Roads get worse the further west I go. hahaha

Newgales going to be crawling with dubs this weekend btw, southwalesdubbers meet weekend at the campsite there.

The polo top caps with the nylon ring are shyte, i use Punto ones. Better shape for the later one-piece rubber top mounts, bigger diameter, thick rubber damper, they even look better and you dont get the gap.

Knocking over bumps is a thing of the past, its great.

Yet another parts-bin tip brought to you by Mikeytech ;)

Sooooo, I've got my new lower springs and shocks on route, does anyone have any recomendations for some half decent top mounts then as ill be having to replace mine!
