How to get Golf AFM's to work on a mk3 GT or NZ

Featured Replies

Is it ok to set one of these up if you taking the original readings from a gt afm with a cone filter attached?

got another question :D

the adaptor plate that yu need to put afilter on it... can this be made of plastic or is there a chance it would melt?!

silly question as it only air flowing through it so in theory it shouldnt heat up but just to be on the safe side...

couple more questions..

i have now fitted the AFM and a K&N but struggled through some of the process.... the car starts pefectly and idles fine and doesnt splutter when accelerating so i assume its fine but just to be sure :D

on the throttlebody elbow there was 2 white air leads... should i have removed one of them as it wasnt needed?

what do yu do with the pipe that sticks out of the throttle body elbow where the air lead went on to (assuming yu were supposed to remove it)?

i didnt remove the lambda probe... will this effect how it has turned out?

if i think of anymore i will remember to ask :D if anyone can shed some light on these questions please answer :D i dont want to be driving about and it go tits up :D

Hi, was thinking of fitting one to my 91 gt coupe. had a look on ebay and this was all i could find. Could you tell me if this is the right part please. And I see that most people that have tried it rate it and i understand that this is probably getting repetitive, but will i notice the difference? Sorry I'm new to this and just trying to learn as much as i can. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

thats is some pikey resistor ^^^

buy a real unmodified AFM.

I am goign to be setting mine up using a gas analyzer ;)

I have been told to aim for a air/fuel ratio of 14.7

Is that the only figure I need to know?

well thats meant to be the most economic and so on.... I'm sure of the rally air to fuel mixture was different.

there are guages that tell you for different things...

i would like to know more myself, i would also like to know how the hell to set it using a gas analyzer?

Is there a quick way to do this?? Like a stndard position for everything? I've heard the CO screw should be turned allthe way in then turned put 1 and a half back out.. what about the black thing in the AFM?

Help. As koosh said what happens with the white leads that connect to the temp switch??

hey mate... just pull out all the temp switch and remove the white lines. find where the other ends connects to and remove them too.. i think one goes into a T-piece so just get rid of the t piece and hook it all up.... pretty sure thats how it goes mate :D any help get back ;)

cheers mate, done that and its working dandy

optima21 hope you don't mind me doing this but I have done a quick guide to removing the temp switch.

As stated you have this in your elbow.

01Temp-Switch-Removal-Guide_0.jpg

Using a pair of pliers pull the metal plate upwards to release the switch from inside the elbow, which consist of this.

02Temp-Switch-Removal-Guid-02.jpg

This leaves you with two holes.

03Temp-Switch-Removal-Guid-04.jpg

There are a million ways to blank the holes, I used this stuff mainly because I had it left over from dewedging my throttle body but it is the best solution for things like this

It will cost you about £5 from a good motorfactors. Its the same sort of form as Blue tack but when you knead it together a chemical reaction happens & it starts to go rock hard! Its consistency makes it easy to cover the holes as it sticks easily.

04Temp-Switch-Removal-Guid-05.jpg

Before I applied it I gave the holes & the area a quick sand to key it slightly, didn't bother with the inside. I then applied it to the top & did the inside too.

05Temp-Switch-Removal-Guid-07.jpg

This is the inside, its actually much flatter then what it looks there due to the scale.

06Temp-Switch-Removal-Guid-08.jpg

Left it for an hour to set.

07Temp-Switch-Removal-Guide_1.jpg

Job done - If you are going for the OEM look you can sand this stuff flat but I'm hung over so will leave it at that.

Obviously this mod is easy to do & doesn't really need a guide but might make people a bit more aware that its worth doing!

Ash.

Be very carefull with the spring adjusting screw as mine just snaped.

I'm going to try and set mine up by just using my CO2 unit over the weekend. Going to try a few spring positions to compare.

I roughly set mine up the otherday and I have just done final tweeks with a CO2 meter.

Here's how to do it basicaaly following the guide but with a few minor changes.

Take the readings with the manometer and position of the arm on the afm as described for your std setup.

Turn the car off

Leave the manometer connected and swap to the Golf setup unpluging the Lamda next to the intake elbow.

Now with the top off the new afm pull the spring back with your fingernail and move the cog anti clockwise until the arm starts to move rownd on its own and is not at the beginging anymore. As in the pic below and release the spring.

afm2.jpg

Now pulling the spring out each time and move the cog clockwise one tooth at a time until the arm just touches the beginning on its own. Move the spring 5 more teeth and thats where mine is.

Next wind the CO2 screw all the way in and then back out 4.5 turns.

Thats it. Start the car ad see how it runs. Should be as described in the guide biut if not tweek it as instructed.

Moving the cog clockwise makes the manometer higher and visa versa. I found when I moved it clockwise i needed to turn the fuel up.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone had an issue with fitting the golf afm to the existing gt intake elbow? I went to go and fit mine and the boresize seems to be too big? Also will I need to replace the intake elbow to get it to fit with something like a samco hose?

thanks in advance

A golf afm will fit into the polo hose with some persuasion. I normally leave the hose in boiling water for a minute or so. Also I used a multimeter to measure the voltage from the wiper arm with the gt afm at idle then simply adjusted the golf afm until it matched, worked very well. Unfortunatly my golf afm resistance track is died and Iv had to put the gt afm back on :( Bogs down at high rpm now just where my 268 cam wants to gallop.
