where did you get the alpine white paint from for that cheap? I've got the white mk3 on ATS classics that used to go round keighley/bingley its lookin a bit sorry for its self atm though.

aye i was thinking gloss black but i wouldnt be able to get a decent finish, might use some matt black brush paint on them.

well... i may have been a bit silly and bought a 80/60 lowering kit... so i think that might rule out keeping the tyres because they'd rub on the inner arch at the rear. so i might get some low profile tyres but tbh i have no idea what tyre size would be ideal for them, keeping price in mind too.

cheers though, they are coming up quite well, still need work though.

Nice work fella :-) With the polishing, you can buy a proper polishing kit for about £25 off ebay, with 3 mops you attach to a drill and 3 grades of compound. It will bring up those wheels lovely! I bought mine a few years ago and its proved invaluable!

Its not about doing so much hard work sanding them down to only use autosol by hand to finish them off :biggrin: Using the mops and compound will show you all the hard work was worth it

Yeah, one of those kits :-)

bought the kit, came today. tried it out and it really speeds up the process! also been using a DA to get a lot of the scratches out, so i should hopefully be able to get a finish better than i can by hand, and quicker.

may be lowering the pony tomorrow if i get time, still got to do a shed load of assignments though for my apprenticeship so that might interfere somewhat.

i'll have some pictures up tomorrow too if i get the last wheel done, see it sitting like a 4x4 on 14" wheels with balloon tyres on standard suspension :-D

Like the work, shame about the hole on the rear, that came from no where quick.

I really liked the car but had a huge bill to pay for work on my golf so i had to sell it. Was a great run around!

okay, finally.

my blackberry torch came yesterday so i've been figuring that out, hence postponing these photos.

it's currently -80 front and -70 rear, but the rear is a tad too low so i might take it up to -50.

went to kwikfit today to get my tracking done and basically got laughed at lol.

'far too low pal'

so, it seems i have to either go to bradistan (bradford) where apparently there is a specialist who charges a fortune, or do it myself the old fashioned way.

i'll get some better pictures up soon aswell. laaarvly!

yeah i know those tyres are massive... thought it would be a compromise to keep them on to improve the ride quality but they dont.

i dont know what size tyres to get though.

AFH has been on hold for a couple weeks now because i'm waiting for the laser cutters to make me up a manifold. i'll get it cheaper but it just means i've had to wait, should be here this week though and then i can get it all back together.

another thing is that i cant find a timing kit for when i put the head back on.

as soon as the manifold arrives though i'll get cracking with it.

ECP do timing kits mate (belt,tensioner and relay pulley) and you just need a water pump.

what size are the wheels

if 14s go for 175/50 185/50 or 195/45

if 15s go for 165/50 or 195/40 or 45s

btw wheels came up proper good lad! i dont have the patience

was talking to a mate and he says he can get hold of some toyo proxies on the cheap.

also, i have got belts and everything, but i mean i need timing tools, i.e. to lock the cams in place etc. because i didnt have the engine in tdc when i took the head off. if i cannot find timing tools i suppose i'll have to try using a DTI.

yo man, timing up the bottom end is easy, just get piston 1 at the top of its travel, the heads a bit of a pain to lock both cams in place, i used a bit of bent metal inbetween two of the pulley teeth, but it kept slipping a tooth and took me a while to time it up perfectly. if that kit works mate let me know as ill get one!

well, since kwikfit laughed at me when i asked them to track the pony, i had to do it the traditional way:

bit of fishing wire strung between the wheels to compare allignment.

i dont know if anybody has ever done it this way. it takes about half an hour and its a bit of a faff but it does the job!

got the carbs out earlier and gave them a proper good clean inside and out

A message to those with cheap-o shock and spring kits:

the rear suspension attatches at the top via an m10 nut, screwing onto the shocker.

the thread is M10 X 1.00, called a 'metric superfine'. fuck knows why, metric fine would do.

anyway, when tightening, be deadly careful not to over tighten like i just did, and fuck the nut.

it didn't go tight, it just suddenly cut its own thread off.

i now have to try to find somewhere tomorrow that sells a superfine nut... like fucking rocking horse shit so they are.

Surely a man of your calibre could knock one up Arron?
