Arrons mk2 effort.

well max, went to work today and searched through three huge boxes of mixed taps, couldnt find a single M10x1.0

went to a supplies centre who didnt have any metric superfine tools, however they have said they will try and order some in for tomorrow, or possibly a box of superfine nuts.

very annoying that it's such a rare thread when in my opinion metric fine would be just... fine.

I have an M10x1.0 tap and a couple of spare M10x1.0 nuts if you need. :) You can have a nut for free if you like dude

awesome :-D

cheers for the offer bud, i may get back to you on that one.

i have found an M10x1 nut and fixed it on, but it turns out that the thread has also been stripped on the shocker itself. The external diameter of the threaded part is now 9.5mm, so i'm wondering if there is a suitable 3/8 imperial thread that i could run a die down my shocker with. cowboy method though.

on a further note, my exhaust also fell off today haha. this car is giving me a hard time, i think it's just desperate to get the 16v in!! 2 weeks off work now, so watch this space :-D

Happy update :-D

the rocker cover was way past the point of polishing, very corroded, dinted, scraped etc.

so yesterday i decided to paint it.

first coat was an etch primer, followed by a high build primer so i could get rid of any imperfections.

Bradford-20110708-00145.jpg

lastly i did a coat of silver, which came up really good, looked nice and OEM :-D

Bradford-20110708-00146.jpg

I was going to keep it plain silver, but got happy with a paint brush and some red paint, and this is the result. proper happy with it, makes it look really neat in an original way.

IMG-20110709-00149.jpg

also painted the cap heads red, which isn't an original touch but i like em.

finally got my cambelt on after a bit of help from some of the guys on this forum, nice one lads :-D

slight problem with the tensioner as it seems to move when i pull or twist the cambelt, so i dont know if it's supposed to do that.

Bradford-20110709-00150.jpg

for the benefit of others, here are the marks i lined the pullys up with:

Bradford-20110709-00151.jpg

Bradford-20110709-00152.jpg

also i got my T-piece this morning, pretty sure all i need to buy now is a vacuum pipe for the manifold.

rocker cover looks very smart

went to halfords today and took my alternator belts to find a suitable one. i'm using the mk4 alternator, so today i've been grinding bits off it and drilling threads out so it will fit the mk2 engine mount. got it on, no picture yet, but i think it should be okay, just scared i may have broken it because i tried getting the pulley off.

i would like it to be running for volkswagen fest at harewood house but that isn't going to happen at this rate!! unless people wish to help :unibrow:

Looking class dude!

Love the cam cover. All looks very smart.

Shitter about the thread on the oil thingy.

  • Author

cheers bud.

yeah, helicoil sorted it though so no biggy in the end!

I'm enjoying this thread, keep it up.

Wow them wheels look so much better than when i had them. Got a nice build going on here

Arron, what gearbox was on the old engine? looking for a 5 speed :-)

Nice progress too!

I would clean that bay to the best of your ability. I just gave mine a once over and wish i had done a more thorough job now :-(

yeah max i was considering re-painting the whole thing to be honest, but if i did i'd do it a different colour. plan is to leave the bay as it is, clean but not perfect, then get engine running, then whip engine back out and clean bay properly, relocate/delete etc. main priority is getting the engine running atm.

gearbox on the old engine is a 5-speed. however i'll be using it on the new engine :-) I sold a 5-speed not so long back too!

having a lot of trouble with the alternator atm. :(

choke cable in:

IMG-20110729-00209.jpg

pump mounted (may alter this)

IMG-20110729-00208.jpg

hopefully i'll get the engine in within the next 7 days, all being well.

any tips for fitting ARB blocks? i'll be doing this tonight, but just wondering if there is anything i should keep in mind. cheers.

when i fitted mine i slacked the ARB nuts on both sides all the way, but not taking them off.. this allowed for movement, i then got my friend to pull hard forward whilst i tried to line it up.. still took a while though, hope it helps.. good luck!! :)

ARB Blocks on.

Engine off stand and ready to receive a gearbox.

Bradford-20110811-00236.jpg

If anybody has the same engine stand as me, then this is the only way to attatch it onto the mount:

Bradford-20110811-00235.jpg

took me about an hour and a lot of fiddling to find this combination haha. so hopefully that pic will help someone.

so today...

gearbox went on:

Bradford-20110813-00238.jpg

starter motor went on too, I'm using the mk4 starter, alternator, flywheel and clutch if anybody is wondering, they all went on fine, just need to cut and heatshrink a couple plugs between the starter and alternator and we're away.

shameless advertisement for macdonalds

Bradford-20110813-00239.jpg

spot of grinding on the ARB mount and we're good!

Carbs arent on yet, just sat on to see if they will fit in the bay.

next things to do are:

bolt engine into car.

wire up fuel pump

wire up engine

speedo cable

fuel lines for carbs

pray

Tried to get it running yesterday but it wasnt having any of it.

I have used the t-piece method but with an inline filter between the carbs and the feed off the t-piece. I dont know if this might be reducing the pressure too much, but i can see fuel in the filter at all times (fills it about a sixth of the way up)

checked the spark and it has good spark on all four cylinders.

plugs smell slightly of petrol.

I have tried the distributer at about 20 different positions of advance, made no difference.

tried the choke, no difference.

It has standard jets but i have some brand new 145's

  • Author

shit load of carb cleaner and she ran! for about 3 seconds. and now my damn battery is flat.

Fueling or engine timing then I reckon buddy. The cams could be 180* out from the crank.
