definitely not the cams, all the timing dots line up perfectly.

i think it's the carbs tbh, gonna take them off again and change the jets.

really need to get it up and running quickly otherwise i might have to buy a punto :(

i had no choice.

I have been forced into doing something so remarkably ridiculous that i would happily let anybody here shoot me in the face.

It has been a dark, dark day for me.

what has happened, happened through a series of unfortunate circumstances.

It makes me incredibly sad, angry, frustrated to say this....

but....

I have bought...

a punto.

A ©unto! :o:shock:

That'll prob give you more shit than gettin the engine running

Hope you get it running a.s.a.p looks awsome in there 8-) .

What year is it? Mileage?

Don't know if it makes any difference but my dizzy is the other way round.. i.e. 180 degrees to yours.

It ran fine with the dizzy that way round in my 6n. I was using FS/FT CBR600 carbs with 155 jets iirc.

It's come a long way, looks awesome mate!

It should run/start on the standard jets arun. The plugs definetly wet with fuel after cranking? And youve checked that the rotor arm is pointing at HT lead No1 when piston NO1 is at (or around TDC)?

the punto is a temporary means of getting to work haha.

matt it's a 1997 P reg, 94k. the luxury 55 sx model, newest car I've ever owned :-p i bought it for peanuts lol.

been using the girlfriends 306 turbo but she's back from america tomorrow so she needs it back.

I have the dizzy set up with the vac advance on top, because otherwise it fouls on the thermostat housing, as far as i know this makes zero difference as long as the plugs match it.

yeah max i've checked and double checked the timing and the firing order etc. It is 1342 isnt it?

furthermore max, no, the plugs are not wet, they smell of petrol but arent wet. carb issues :-/

Milestone!

after a few weeks of trying different things to get the car running and nothing working, I enlisted the help of craig (dubownerbilco)

he came round last night and we started faffing, initially deciding my fuel lines were on the wrong pipes.

so he changed to a different pipe and on went the fuel pump... no leaks, seemed to be ok, and then we took the carbs off.

manifold and cylinders full to the brim with petrol haha.

so... syringed that out and started again.

took the carbs off and they seemed ok, main jets furry but not blocked, nothing seized.

then we looked at the pilot jets, which i had no idea about... blocked to fook!!

so, unblocked them with his 0.4 drill bit and put everything back together.

boom she fires, and runs, and sounds ridiculous with no exhaust.

Milestone!

Be fun to bump in to you again see how she roars haha! Can also do some convoying to any meets there is :)

Bumped into Craig in mcdonalds just after he left yours! Wasn't expecting to see him in keighley haha!

Good news!

What do the pilot jets do then?

  • Author

aye rawse it'll be a few weeks until it's road ready again, but yes, craigs a fair ledge.

max i was informed that the pilots control fuelling at idle and quarter throttle, something like that, so without those the engine was getting no fuel while trying to start the car.

was good though, as soon as those pilot jets were cleaned out, she fired up after just a couple cranks, no choke or gas needed. idled high but like i say, craig says he's gonna come back down with his kit and show me how to balance and tune it all up.

:) we will have her purring in no time

Any updates?

  • Author

unfortunately not really no... i've got it sat in my unit waiting for me to find the effort to put it through an MOT. runs lovely though, feels nice and powerful, it's just far too loud with only one silencer.

my to-do list before she lives again is:

- replace rear suspension

- fabricate/buy full stainless exhaust with 2 silencers

- replace brake lines

Good good.

right. I haven't updated this thread in ages, because nothing has been done to the car!

However, i'm cracking back on with it so I may as well keep this thread up to date.

pottering about, i've taken the old exhaust off:

and put the new one on:

Just got to wait for my rear section to arrive and then i'll make a new mid section

I had to remove the engine to get the stainless manifold on. pain in the arse.

Spent a lot of time underneath though and it's surprisingly solid all over!

The manifold was an ebay special, and the welding looks really good, and it's fully ported, no rough edges, worth every darn penny.

Got all my christmas shopping done in november, so nights out aside, should have some spare cash over the next month to put on this.

gonna sell the classics and run steel wheels i'm thinking.

For the same reason i'm making the exhaust quieter at the cost of power, i want this car to look like any other old shitter.

Woah!

Long time since I've heard from you!

Hows it going? What was it that you picked up from mine ages ago?

Engine is looking insane!

Good progress!

Is that timed to 4V yeah??

max, yeah I haven't been doing anything on the car for months haha, it was those unknown jap spec wheels I bought off you!

erix, timed to 4v? no idea bud, I just timed it so it ran! didnt realise i had choices!

I hope the exhaust I've ordered fits, it's designed for a G40 for a 2" bore.

i thought this should have been on the road by now!?!

how long since i got it to fire up for you now?

it should have been on the road months ago!

crazy mofo, good to see you getting back on with it though :)

Oh yeah! They were zenders i think?

Anyway, really liked the car! Will be awesome when complete,

You work for rolls royce dont you? Or simular?

Had the engine running properly yet?

  • Author

Yeah craig I completely lost interest in it over the last year or so!

I have a month off work now! (saved up my holidays) so I've been cracking on with it to save boredom kicking in.

aye max am still working for rolls, and cheers :) yeah i've had it running nicely in the past, only problem is i've never had it running for longer than half an hour or so, because it's not legal on the road! To be fair, i've started it probably 10 times this year and it's started straight away every time.

anyway, I think tomorrow I will make a set of new brake lines for her.
