i attacked it with a wire brush and got rid of most of the bad bits and then chuck some underseal over it. that was summer last year. not checked since! hope its not gotten any worse!!

Hah old vws love to rust like motherbitches, that's why I'm so glad I got a welder and started having a go. Never going to be short of rusty sheds in need of welding.

Decided I wanted the golf on the road again for the weekend, so that's taking my attention this week, however I have whipped all off the rocker cover, clamping strips, engine mount, inner and outer Cambelt covers, alternator crank pulley and lower alternator bracket off and boxed up ready to drop off at the powdercoaters on my lunch break tomo

Hah, its nothing compared to what i had to remove from the Peril. Really strange that the one in the best nick around this area is the Mk1 olop!

Dropped parts off at the powdercoaters today, should be back in a week or so, 50 quid for blasting and painting so pretty stoked - also dropped in a mk2 alloy rocker cover and rear beam mounts as well for the golf and peril

potential for the rear axle to go SEE you at any moment =/

todays endeavours

weekend spent away from the cars, so only managed to get back up there this evening.

now that the top of the arch was done, time to move onto the inner arch - that meant cutting of part of the sill away for access, but before doing that i had to make sure i measured up my repair panel.

i had a pattern sill knocking around that i bought a few years back on ebay, unfortunately it wasnt really the right shape across the top part of the arch, so i clamped it to the full mk3 rear quarter donor, and 'massaged' it into the right shape. then off the outer sill

in the above picture, you'll notice the lack of two inner panels, they have been cut out for better access and will be recycled into forming the new repair panels

then out with the filler neck panel and pipe

nice work mine was as bad as this if not worse and i cut all the rot out like yourself and then moved the wall bit and made it into less of a dirt and water trap inside there to stop it happening in the future.

But its all gettting changed again now anyway

Decided the easiest and quickest way to sort this would be to cut out the required panels from the donor car, cut the to size, repair the seams and weld into place in mine

cut the outer skin off the donor

looked pretty good from the outside, but heres the inside

They could make good pictures for a buyers guide for a mk1-3 polo as this is probably what they are all hiding!

and my donor panels cut out, need some trimming

Top work there, i've been studying those pictures very carefully, i know my mk2's almost non existent in the filler neck area so that will all be fun to come.

powdercoated bits came back today - well chuffed for 60 beans :)

gutted when i took it off the hook tho, as it pulled a tiny bit of powdercoating off! but luckily its on the raised part which is getting polished up anyway *phew*

only got tomorrow morning till about 5pm to work on the car tomorrow, so dunno whether to build the engine up, fit the new clutch and chuck it in the car, or get on the welding...

hey Saf i reckon you should crack on and get the welding done as you can do the engine anytime or little bits at a time whereas the welding you need a while just to get cracking and get on it

Fookin 'ell. I tapped it out on the floor and so much rust fell out, it's mad.

Didn't do owt on the car over the weekend, but was nearly a full house at the unit tonight - good times

Made a repair panel after repairing part of the inner seam around the axle mount so there was enought meat to weld to. Used 1.5mm zintec

Helping my mate Matt rebuild his '60 charger for a sweet caddy tomorrow so no more action till Wednesday on das comet!

still weighing up ideas about making the filler neck panel now, going to spend tonight making up some panels and ill leave the welding till tomorrow night as I've got friday all night to work on it and saturday day as the rest of my weekends booked out for the lady

A visit from Karl, Olly and co saw the engine building up again with the painted bits

looking real good mate I'm going to have to get on the panel making soon to make all my bits match up once i get the new arches

anytime plan for getting it finished i had one for mine but it will never happen lol its dawned on me what I've actually got left to do but yours is coming on fast now is there much welding left to do elsewhere on the car or is this the last big bit

Cheers man, not much left now, this arch repair and the bit at the back of the drivers arch then just need to stick the engine and interior back in, fit the exhaust and should be good to go. Hoping to sort it by the end of the month as the tax is out on the Beemer and I wanna rebuild some of the suspension components and few odds and ends. More work on this tomo night

finished most of the inner arch now, just gotta make a lip for the outer arch

so once thats done i can give that a coat of epoxy mastic.

on it all bank hol weekend so stay tuned for progress :)
