the steel is 1mm mild steel, so its pretty thin to be fair, quite easy to blow holes thru, its just a case of mastering the pulse technique and holding the gun steady at the correct angle.

plus it should help where i want to connect thicker steel to thinner sheet. for making a mounting plate with welded captive nuts on em for propr mounting of the case rather than bolting directly through the floorpan as the prev owner had

finished off the welding on the inner wing a couple of nights ago, needs a drain hole cutting out

ground back the welds today and bashed the plate about a bit to match the original contours. just gotta cut a couple more rusty sections out nearer the wiper motor and can box off the plate and put on the ridge and clamping nut on for the battery.

then its choppy choppy on a couple of small holes on the lower section of the inner wing and a small hole by the jacking point and i can seam seal, etch prime, prime, paint, underseal, bosh inner wing and arch liner back in and crack on with the engine

Its one of the most awkward jobs i've ever done replacing a battery tray.

As long as its sealed, painted and the battery doesnt fall through then its a good job!

Can't believe it's been so long since an update. I'd almost forgotten about the unit after a winter sabbatical. Come the first day of snow and we all turned up there!

I sold the car to my mate Teg who shares the unit so the car didn't move. I bought it back in October with a few of the mk2 g40 bits he had collected.

I've since finished the welding on the battery tray, inner wing and floor and got them painted in epoxy mastic.

Fitted a gt steering rack, steering damper, g40 steering arms and tca's and power flex antirollbar bushes ( well I will when I find the missing one, it's around there somewhere! ) and a set of vw2s.

Got it back on its wheels today and into a new spot so we can start moving around the cars as some are going and new ones coming!

Not sure what engine or suspension I'm going to use in it, or if I'm going to sell it as a rolling shell or a running car, far too many ideas at the moment with all of the cars. Gonna smash this week out at the unit, get all the cars rollingg

Yeah it will do. The donor car will provide the panels for the peril to repair the crusty rear axle mount on the peril, then i just have to finish stripping the rear floor, get it painted up and then i can start refitting the rear end and interior, got a mint full carpet set for it and G40 interior/door cards.

I WILL have to bob over again sometime soon, be nosey and lend a hand.

productive week last week at the unit, got my old amp and speakers now i upgraded the house AV, and chucked a lil media pc in there so we have some banging tunes

got all the rubbish cleared up and bagged up

scrap metal sorted - should hopefully pay for something communal for the unit

comet blue suspension fully back together and rolling, daves turbo rolling again and moved out the way and golfie tucked away

to help make more room in the unit, i stripped teggys gfatty. roof chop! some panels will help the peril and lupolo, and the carpet and headlining will make the comet feel more like a car!

Hopefully have it in a coat of paint on Wednesday evening and weld in the pattern cross member to replace the previously hacked 'member on account of the G40 turbo, that'll probably take me through until the weekend

the following bits will be ordered - cam belt, water pump seal, sump gasket, crank oil seals, flywheel bolts, hopefully should be here by the end of the week so i can build up the engine over the weekend.

All being well, come the end of the weekend, I should have the floor and crossmember welded in and painted, the engine painted and built back up and in the engine bay, some black carpet, a G40 interior and depending on how enthusiastic I'm feeling - fit a new headliner.

What paint have you got in mind for the engine? I'm weighing up options atm for the MRS's new heart. Been looking at a range of VHT products that are sprayable, but to do things properly it's nearly £50. Theres some other stuff called Motor Coater too that I've been looking at that's brushable, but it varies wildly in price!

pretty cheap, brushes on well, but can also be thinned down and sprayed.

I have some caliper paint left over from when I painted the 256mm calipers, its blue, so i'll do the block with that, just to get rid!

it looks like a load but with a few hours each evening it should be do-able :)
