I love welding, I've always been good on a gas MIG but never brilliant. Got my DC TIG and welding is really easy with it, only problem I find I have is it's all on a button on the torch, I need foot pedal to stop myself putting too much heat in the metal.

Saying all that I managed to build my own Stainless system with my TIG and also a 316 Stainless catch tank (bodged it together with some old 316 3" pipe I had in the garden). I know I keep saying this but I will eventually TIG up my stainless inlet for my ITBs (I've got all the bits ready to go just can't get at the TIG as my brother has buried it in Golf bits in the shed).

I've just made this gearbox mount for my mk1 out of stainless;

Good thing about stainless is that although it is a more expensive material, you save money later down the line by not having to coat it in anything. You can just polish it and leave it! I think I'm in love with stainless steel now

i love too see a good fabrication piece.. that gearbox mount is pretty cool i must admit :p need to work on the welding abit more though ... defiantly didn't have a steady hand when you welded that did you :) .. also looks like you dabbed the filler wire into the weld pool.. try feeding it in more consistently as it leaves a better finish to the weld and also a stronger weld. also try putting a little weave on your torch, if you can get the weave to be even throughout the weld it makes it alot stronger and looks dead cool

also get you are gearbox mount shot blaster.. will cost like £2-3 and it will take all the heat marks out of it and look so much tidier

Yeah my chair broke so I had to do it standing up And with a foot pedal meant it was difficult to keep everything steady. I can always go over it again anyway.

I'm not gonna get it shot blasted though, it'll take forever to polish up again lol, I can't be arsed with that.

ahhh right i wouldnt like to have been you then :) .. welding with a foot pedal i find hard enough ha ha never mind standing up aswell lol .. just go over it without any wire and do whats called a "hot pass" to make it look neat

think of the results though.. every time you open your bonnet your gonna see those heat marks and thing "awwwh man I'm so lazy :(" lol.. not that i can talk i have the same thing when i open my bonnet with a pair of plyers and thing why am i so lazy i cant be arsed too fix you ? lol

Ahh OK, thats what a "hot pass" is, I've done that a few times without knowing it had a name. Yeah I'll probably do that when I can be arsed to remove it from the bay Yeah balancing on one foot whilst controlling a pedal with the other, whilst hunched over something at waist height, whilst holding a very inflexible torch in one hand and a metre long peice of wire in the other, whilst trying to point both those things at a very small area is not something I'm gonna attempt again Next time I'll just stop being an impatient idiot and go in the house to get another chair before I start

yer good shout ha ha ! its best to get a push button torch (water cooled are better) and practice standing up .. iv never used a chair.. didnt want too get dependant on them as.. i work in the nuclear industry so obviously we cant always have a chair in a welding bay ha ha .. more like laying under a pipe with the torch burning your hand off and the wire so short you have too get a new bit every 5 seconds because theres no room for a full length bit lol
