Had a couple of days off work so spent em stripping the rear end off the polo, wheels, suspension, rear brakes, stub axle, backing plates, rear beam, and then decided to go the whole hog and stripped the factory underseal form under both rear arches ready for a couple of coats of stone chip, and then finally a couple of coats of Riadgelb (yellow).

Stripped and on axle stands.

Stripped rear beam. backing plates, and drums.

I will prime and paint tomorrow.

Rear arches stripped and stonechipped.

Will add a splash of yellow tomorrow :-D

Spent an hour or two painting this afternoon.

Primed the rear beam, brackets, and painted the backing plates and drums.

They came out awsome, the spots you see on them is rain, luckily they were dry before it rained :-D

Also painted under the arches, although I'm not too happy with the shade as its slightly too dark against the 35yr old faided paint work.

Will paint the rear beam in satin black, and then build it all back up with new brake hoses, wheel cylinders, and shoes.

Then take it for an MOT.

I wouldn't worry about the wheel wells being a bit darker, once you've got the wheels back on and the car on the ground it won't be a problem.

Rear beam, sanded to bare metal, the only rust on it was surface on the welds (it was plastered in underseal/zeibart which had done its job well) surface rust treated with jenolite, then a coat of acid etch primer, followed by a couple of coats of zinc primer, and finally three coats of satin black.

Job done! :-D

Rear beam finished in satin black.

Managed to get a better colour match, almost spot on! so repainted under the arches and arch lips.

Fitted rear beam, standard suspension (for the time been), backing plates, brakes, drums, and bled the brakes.

Next, MOT.

Looking damn tidy on those inner arches.was the inside of the filler flap bit on the arch fully caked in ziebart from the factory and did it hold up well. If so how thick was it coated as it would be good to know that when i invariably have to do I know how to avoid having to for another 30 years

I'm struggling to find a correct reversing light switch, so at the moment i have no transport.
