It's a jig that has been designed to do one thing, put a car on its side.

It's not scary, it's safe, and very secure, it's gonna take around 30 to 40 hours to completely strip the underside to bare metal, and then it will be primed, at least three of coats of stonechip, then basecoat and lacquer.

I would much prefer to carry out all that work with the car on its side, and make sure everything is stripped and sealed, it really is an unforgiving job that's never ending, if I had to do it from underneath the car lying on my back or standing in a pit, I wouldn't even attempt it!

The only area where i can see a little surface rust.

at least i wont have to do all that on mine having cut out my floor pan but it will still take ages to do all the other little bits underneath

I stripped the underside of my mk1 golf a couple of years ago, it took me around 40 to 45 hours to get the whole of the underside down to bare metal, when I'd finished I swore I'd never do another

I'm kinda looking forward to starting, but I know that when the big floor panels are done and i have to start on all the nooks and crannies, I will have wished I'd never started.

Oh well, at least it gives me something to do whilst I wait to get the welding done in the engine bay.

Great work mate... bet the jig is ridiculously helpful. Is it just secured by the wheel nuts on the offside?

I know working on cars isnt all about who can get it done the quickest... but have you considered getting it sandblasted? I'm just thinking that 40hours is a lot and that type of job (like sanding) can get tedious quickly. Just a thought...

Yeah you could get the whole car blasted sure it wouldn't cost too much either really

Nah, I'm not going to paint the whole car,(not yet anyway) and yeah! acid dip would be the best way to go but at a cost of around £1000 way too much, and then every seam would need to be re-sealed.

It's not recommended to sandblast the outer shell of a car as this would cause damage to the larger panels, I'm quite happy to plod on and strip the underside, although I might leave some of the rear sections as they look pretty well protected, and also too awkward to get into!

Hey Dan, Kiz came round today and finished off the welding in the engine bay, I'll post up some pics tomorrow.

As you will see he has done a superb job!

Excellent work mate! those suspension turrets are stronger now than before i removed the raintray divider!

The area around where the master cylinder is located has been weakened some what, so a plate has been welded on to add extra strength.

The banding around the turrets got damaged, so strips were cut to size and welded in place on the outside, and strengthening plates welded on up inside the turrets.

Plenty of grinding to do now! all the holes that are now not needed in the bay have been welded up, the wiring harness tabs have also been removed and tided up.
