Personally, I have no qualms about killing foxes. I've seen what one will do to a field of young cattle just for sport, they need their levels keeping down. I've shot and run over loads, but the fox is just doing what nature programmed it to do, so there's no reason it should suffer. The average hunt will be out all day, terrorise one and normally not suceed in kiling it. What's the point?

My uncle owns a chicken farm, they've had no issues so far so far *touch wood* but the year before he took the farm over a fox got into the barn over night, killed over 40 hens for fun and traumatised a good few hundred more then escaping. It wasn't so lucky the next night however when it came face to face with the owners shotgun..

I think the hunt is a load of bollocks, but as far as killing them goes, there are some situations where it's required. When you've got a barn of 16000 hens that are your livelihood you're not going to think twice are you?

It also comes in huge piles, so quite easy to avoid.

I've been having a read of this thread. The argument's a getting too one sided and daily mail for me, so I'd just like to point out the following:

1. "Roads are for cars not horses/bikes/pedestrians (delete as appropriate)"

The first roads in this country were built by the ancient Romans. Now what do you think the main form of transport was for the best part of the next 2000 years was? In fact if you read the highways act you'll notice that horses (pedestrians and cyclists too) have a right to be there whereas cars are on road by license. IIRC cycles and horses when ridden are actually classed as vehicles.

2. "horses/cyclists/pedestrians don't pay road tax"

Neither do you on your car. Road tax was abolished in the 1930's. If you look at your tax disc your actually paying Vehicle Exercise Duty, which is related to your vehicle emissions. No emissions=noVED. VED is not a ringfenced fund for the cost of the road network, if it was it would never pay for its upkeep. Look up how much a mile of motorway costs to build, its scary! The majority of the funding from the roads comes from general taxation.

3. "Who is liable for damages when a car overtakes a horse rider and the horse is spooked?"

That's up to the courts and the insurance companies. However say if you passed a horse in a car, spooked it and it kicked your car, have you ever thought you might have been too close? A horse can only kick as far as its legs are long.

To quote rule 163 of the highway code "give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car (see Rules 211-215)" and clarifies this with a picture of an overtaking car giving a cyclist a wide berth.

So you might not like horses (or cyclists and pedestrians) being on the road, but they are there and do have a right to be there. So you'd best learn to share.

Personally i have no problem with horses being on the road. You come across them so rarely and if your intelligent you will move around them without incident. Plus I'd much rather step in what came out the back of a horse than what came from a dog.

Horse boxes are far worse than the horses themselves. I'm pretty sure the average horse spends more time in one of those filthy, stinking, polluting, slow, badly maintained, mobile road blocks of a truck than being ridden. Why must horse people insist transporting there animal up and down the country, clogging up the roads, to do exactly the same thing they could do by just staying locally. Which would be more fun for the poor horse, as it doesnt have to stand in a cramped drafty box for hours.

Dont even get me started on cyclists......

I am known to occasionally cycle myself and I know there are probablly many cyclists who ride responsibly and obey the rules of the road (i do), Fair play to you and i've nothing against you. But it seems none live in my area. I hate the tw@s that cant decide whether they prefer the path or the road, hopping on and off the path without looking. Cant count the amount of times I've nearly been run down.

The ones that ride straight through red lights and over pedestrian crossings as if the rules dont apply to them.

The ones that struggle to ascend hills, wobbling along as if drunk (ffs get off and push!), or ride in the centre of the road, making it impossible to pass.

The worst thing is, if i did some of those in my car, i'd be punished. But these IGNORANT TW@S dont even get a telling off.

You have to pick up after your dog so why not apply the same rules?

If your pet pooch craps on the road/footpath and you don't pick it up you face a fine upto £1000 yet a horse can dump a far greater amount of crap and nothing is done! even the local plod horses are allowed to dump on the roads around the shopping centre in MK

I think it's this view that pisses me the most. Dog shit stinks for starters. It's normally on path ways or public parks because that is where most are walked. These areas are also likely to be frequented by Joe public who doesn't want to be surrounded or be in contact with said dog shit. Also, dog shit is easy to miss and thus easy to step in. It will also make you blind if in contact with eyes etc. It's fairly rank stuff due to dogs having a fairly basic diet of meat.

Horses shite on the other hand tends to be in the middle if a road, where Joe public had no business being unless staggering around. It also comes in huge piles, so quite easy to avoid. Finally, it's not quite as disgusting or 'toxic' as dog shit either. There happens to be a fair fewer amount of horses compared to dogs too, so less shot to cone into contact with.

Not quite as disgusting? It's digested food which has passed through the bowels of a animal, what's less disgusting about that? Also there is less chance of stepping in it but more chance of hitting it with your car, not sure about you but cleaning dog shit off my shoe and cleaning horse shit off my car piss me off in equal numbers. Unlike walking past dog shit trying to avoid horse shit in a car is some times just too dangerous.

And lastly what about the danger that horse shit left on country roads poses to motorcycle riders? If they hit a pile of that on a bend and they are coming off, if some things coming the other way they could easily be killed.

It doesn't take much to hook a shit bag to the back of a horse, in fact its probably less effort than following your dog around with a poopascoopa but riders don't bother doing it. Imo any horse being risen on the road should have one or the rider gets a £1000 fine. You may not think its as disgusting as dog shit but a lot of people do, shit is shit at the end of the day.

How can you say that horse shit doesn't smell? Maybe not after its been left a while and a skin forms over it but fresh horse shit stinks. Funnily enough dog shit does exactly the same...

Round where I live it's very rare to spot a dog crap on pavement. Although horse crap is quite common, and smeared all over the road by the cars running over it.

And yes, shit is disgusting, but I have a personal grading system that puts dog shit above horse any day. And I'm sorry, bit I have never heard of any motor cyclists having an accident because a horse left a load in the street. Nor have I ever had to specifically clean horse turd off my car.

You may not of heard of any but these accidents do happen and it doesn't mean its not an ever present danger for motor bike riders.

Imo it doesn't even come down to which shit is worse than the other, its still shit and it doesn't take a lot of effort to either stop the horse from doing it (by fitting a shit bag) or by cleaning it up after them. It's not just motorists that have to deal with it, when horse riders do use pathways they leave shit there too. Horse riders bitch about motorists not showing them respect ect but what respect are they showing everyone else by leaving shit all over the place? It all seems to be one way with horse riders in my experience. I always slow down when I come to a horse, I turn my music down if its loud and I drop it in to a higher gear so the engine is quiter, I give them plenty of space, its not much to ask that they show a bit of the same kind of respect and clean up the mess that their horse leaves is it?

I haven't had to specifically clean horse poo off my car, but I have had to clean my car when it had horse poo on it, not nice

personally i think everybody else should be band from the roads except me :) i live in the country side and its rather annoying everybody seems too think there driving a wagon !

i mean, i know that it's similar to saying "classic cars shouldn't be on the road", but they're such a hazard and so much trouble, and there must be an alternative to riding them on the road?

and it's not a completely uninformed view, cos my dad's a funeral director and they often have horse drawn funerals which are prety good for the business, but i personally don't thin i'd do them.

i recently came past some horses, i didn't know you had to slow down,i thought you just had to quiet your engine, so i went into neutral, but i went past at about 25 (did slow down abit...)

i'm pretty lucky nothing happened, because my polo is bright orange and i imagine if i was a horse, i'd be pretty fucked off if i was that horse! sorry horsey.
