Rich's MK1 20VT Project (hopefully!)

Featured Replies

Model: 1981 Polo N

Engine: Seized

Suspension: It has a bit of a bounce to it

Brakes: What are they?

Wheels and Tyres: Rusty steelies and cracked tyres all round

Exterior Styling: Rust and holes!

Interior Styling: Cobwebs

ICE and Security: Retro stereo that only has radio and one big boom box underneath it lol

Been wanting a project for a while and saw this come up on ebay, been sat for 9 years, anyway, jumped in at last few seconds and won it. Got it delivered to my work on thursday and started stripping it on saturday. I also bought a 20VT lump off ebay with the intention of somehow getting it into the polo, I know this will be hard to do but I dont have a timescale and it'll get done whenever it does. Boot floor wants replacing, as does, drivers and passengers front footwell, rear arches, rear panel and battery tray. I will be concentrating mainly on getting the bodywork all sorted first before I even think about mechanical, anyway, enough blabbering on, heres some pics.

I know mate lol, to be honest, it all probably sounds and looks worse than it actually is, for a 30 year old car thats been stood for 9 years it is actually quite solid, i will be taking my time on this one to get the body perfect and i wont be bodging with the fibreglass either! Anyway, I've been trying to find where to get replacement panels from, I've checked out hadrian, is there anywhere else?

hey do you want a boot floor to weld in? I'm cutting mine out so i can fit a diffuser and mine is in very good condition still, seems like we will be doing a simaler converion at the same kinda time so it be worth sharing notes n things.

my work address is tom.healey@smartofstevenage.co.uk if you wanna keep in contact that way.

be interested to know what gearbox your going to run etc.

Interesting build! Just a little info tho! There's plans available for purchase to put big blok engines into mk1,2&3 polos think there on German eBay! Makes sense to do it th way its already been done!

Hi there mate, thanks for the offer of the boot floor but I think I'm going to weld in a flat sheet. As for mechanical side, I have no idea at the minute, I'm just going to concentrate on getting the body all sorted first mate, but yeah I will save you are email, be good to swap notes etc like you say.

Little bit of an update, the car is at my work so I can only get to work on it on saturdays and last week I was on a stag do! Anyway, started stripping some more of it yesterday. Going to try and make a spare wheel well this week, I was going to just put a flat sheet but thought it would look better with a wheel well. I've got the carpets, seats, headlining and maybe some other bits to get rid of if anyone is interested as it wont be going back in when its finished, the seats will need recovering as they are minging and the drivers seat is split, I will put some pics up this week, if they dont go, there off to the tip! Anyway, heres some pics:

looks like a good start, have you seen anything of these big block plans from german ebay i might be intrested too, i cant wait to see how you fit the 20v in :D

20vt will be fun to fit :), tall block engine into a car designed for a short block, you will either be scraping the sump on the floor or will have to massively raise your bonnet! :)

cant wait! :ninja:

is it not possible to put some tilt on the engine to be able to make it fit better

so........ is the 20v turbo going down

hey there, sounds like your 20v project is a bit like mine and on hold for a bit.

I'm having to use my car as a daily driver soon so cant take the old girl off the road.

me and my mate have recently purchased a kit car and from how that engine is put in rather then spend the money building a subframe from scratch think I'm going to just modify the golf mk4 version directly into the polo.

  • Author

Hi Pepe, yeah I found the salzmann website, you can get a subframe and looks like all the new mounts off him from germany, for about 900-1000 euros!!!!

Alrite Tommi, just replied to a post of yours on mk1 polo club, yeah its at a bit of a stand still at the minute, I'm waiting for a rear panel to show up from germany which i ordered on monday and I'm off to get a sheet of steel this week hopefully to get started on the body. I've also bought some bits from rally design to build my own front coilovers and got some wide arches to come aswell, I want to get the body all sorted and stop it rusting anymore before i think about the engine, because to be honest, I cant justify spending the best part of a grand to get the engine to fit by buying the salzmann stuff so need to think of something else i think!

Probably still working out how to make it fit

aha yeh probs, i want to see whats been done to it almost been a year now

Pretty sure the guy tried to sell the project on in the end... but i just searched dvla and its been unlicensed for ages, shells probably been scrapped

I've seen cars unlicensed for longer (33 years in fact) but like you said, it's probably been scrapped and not had a certificate of destruction put on it.
