Not looking to spend top moneys just a low end but decent enough the nikon coolpix any good?

Pretty sure a Coolpix isn't an SLR. I may be proved wrong though.

I have a NIkon D60, taken some good pics with it... Totally lost at what these cameras can do, definitely don't get the most out of it but that's the beauty as there's a lot to learn!

Should be able to get a D3000 cheap ish now, Or even a D5000

Although, the D3100 is the best entry level DSLR out atm i think, however its not cheap.

How much are you willing to spend, as the price range is pretty huge, cheap £200 to well over 1K

As martin says, theres so much to learn with one.

Theres soo much on the market too, it really depends what your after. Also you need to go and have a play with them, its really important that its comfy in your hand and you like the feel of it etc.

I found the cannons horrible to hold, but the nikons were amazing. Yet to others its the opposite.

Canon D500 or D550 great for a starter, i borrowed a D550 and i fucking loved it!

was readin a review on a coolpix as i posted this read further down and said it's not actually a slr :p after £300 or lower oviously not a pro so just after the best for the price cheers for the replies i'll have a look :)

I just bought a Nikon D3100...superb camera.

I got a canon 450d a few years back, would defiantly recommend it or another Canon.

Not sure if they still make the 450d anymore though.

If u are after HD video recording then buy D500 and some zoom lens...550 is wasting money without another lens.

I have a Nikon D60 and I love it.

Constantly learning with it and I've had it for almost 3 years now, and I know it can still do more.

I know you get a Nikon D40 which is slightly cheaper than the D60, and to the average amature photographer there is no difference between the two, so that maybe the one to go for in the Nikon DSLR range.

I believe the Nikon D3*** range is more of a starter DSLR camera, but again I've had a go of Scott's D3100 and for everyday amature use its no different to the DSLRs I mentioned before.

Personally I'd see if you can get a good deal on a D3*** set of somekind. Maybe with an extra lense thrown in or something.

Mate just picked up a D3000 body for £200 on ebay, then with a kit lense on top it wont cost anymore than £300

Kit lenses will be cheap to get hold of, as its the 1st thing to go when u buy a dslr, there are so many more lenses out there.

Why not? I just shot my way through a digital photography course with the OU and got some great pics with my Sony. A very capable camera, if I learnt anything it's that it's your eye that makes the shot, not specifically the camera.

I think the question is,

"Do I want to join the 'forum-boring' elite of Canon/Nikkon owners who gripe about cameras more than take pictures with them whilst spending alot of money on their hobby."

OR

"Do I want to spend £200 on a dslr that can do pretty much everything I need it to at a basic to intermediate level with a stock lense...?"

If the latter is the question for you, get something like a Sony, or a cheap second hand Nikkon or Canon. My attached pic was taken with my "rubbish" Sony. I think it's alright. Get hold of a cheap/free version of Photo Shop Editions or the like and snap away.

(The forum-boring wasn't aimed at anyone in here, no-ones started rattling on about their f-stop figures and shutter rates yet, just thought I'd get that in before y'all started hating on the new guy Sony lover ;D )

Sony's arent bad. Lovely to hold, like the Nikon's.

When i was hunting for one, I very very nearly bought a sony. Like so close i ordered one. Didnt bother in the end (long story) and i still don't have a DSLR now

But it was between a sony and a nikon. Sony lenses aren't badly priced either.

yeah there was a couple sony's that looked ok and reviews seemed to rate them i'm not looking for a studio quallity at the end of the day :)

i have a sony a250 which i brought off a mate for £150 quid and a great starter camera,altho I'm saving for a nikon.

I'm getting better at taking pics with it but i can never edit them as 1 i dont have photoshop to edit them a lil and 2 nor do i have a clue how to edit them lol

iv got a canon 300D bought it a while ago mostly use it for astropics but i use manual lens with a adapter (m42 - EFS) alot cheaper and can get better quailty pics than stock lens cant stand the digital lens

i picked it up on ebay for £130 and lens i got (58mm £15 135mm £20 200mm £40 adapter £10) i do have a 18-55 digi which i had for £50

Get a film SLR. Lovely lovely noise <3

My BF picked up a mint Nikon D3000 with lense for £240, still £300+ most places, £500 in Argos lol.

No point spending more and getting anything better as its more about your use of the manual settings, lenses and learning how to use it, id get a D3000 over a D3100 as your first too as its cheaper, supports more external flashes, captcha software and remote then the D3100. Also supports any AF-S lense which there are plenty around.

Pre-owned cam equipment and next day delivery on all items, used them and highly recommend!
