20v Turbo conversion in a 6n ?

cheers naz that was very useful :)

well i now know what i need ..

BAM engine -

02A/02J/02R gearbox -

wiring to go with the bam engine-

standalone ecu or would it be alot easier to go for a BAM ecu? - can i remove the imobolizser on these so i can run my current key barrel and key est.. or will i need a ignition barrel and key est for a BAM engine? -

custom made shafts/mk2 golf shafts -

will i need the linkage system too go with the gearbox i choose or are they simple enough too design my own? -

i have a rough idea how I'm going too mount the engine -

vr6 radiator -

and too make things easier i should swap out my break servo for a cupra R servo ?

all that sound about right? anything iv missed?

To add to the list

Engine service parts eg. oil cambelt etc

Engine mounts

Clutch - you can use a Vr6 clutch and G60 flywheel - its the cheapest option and is known to cope with the power and is a lot cheaper than a dual mass flywheel

ECU - to deimmobilise the BAM ECU is only £70, so not a bad price and is the option I'm taking... the other option is to go to Qpeng and use their custom ECU and wiring but that is an expensive option (£1000+) but does cut out a lot of hassle

Gear linkage isn’t a hard thing to find... just look on ebay for the one that matches your gearbox

Hydraulic to cable clutch conversion

Starter motor to match the gearbox

Fuel Pump

Intercooler + piping

Battery relocation kit (as battery will need to go to the boot)

New brake lines (altho I'm not sure if its absolutely necessary, but its not a risk id like to take)

Exhaust system

I'm not sure about the brake servo, but the Ibiza cupra R (the rare one with 4 pot brembos) comes with a stubby one, its hard to come by. But u may get away with a polo gti one, but it will be closer to the engine

I know theres more... cant really think of anything else off the top of my head

I may have a BAM engine (with wiring) with an O2A gearbox with matching starting motor for sale soon

how hard is the hydraulic to cable clutch conversion? only thing I'm pritty like un knowledgable in the slightest on ..

apart from that i think I'm confident in the conversion :)

drop me a pm when you have it up for sale.. if i have the funds at the time i might arrange a road trip too collect :D

The mechanism isn't hard to fit, it costs approx £140-160 max to buy the bits you need and everything part no. wise is on clubgti.

You just remove the hydraulic master cylinder/piping from the origional box and fix this thing in place which then gives you a clutch cable lever on the box. Not sure how the clutch feels with this mechanism as i know having a hydro clutch is a LOT more softer- just ask Rich on here who has a 6 speed lupo box in his mk5 with hydro clutch conversion.

The shifter- you will have to use the one that goes with the box, but i'm sure you can adapt another type of shifter if you have to- i've seen people take apart a mk3 vr shifter tower and replace the internals with mk4 golf parts inc the shifter cables...this means you can bolt this thing right up as you would normally.

Immobilisor- as Naz mentioned, you can get the ecu de-immobilised which means it will work with any clock pod you choose...the immobilisor system used IMMO3 which means the clocks would contain the immobilisor information, you'd still have a reader coil around the ignition and those two would then 'talk' to the ecu to tell it you have the correct key chip.

De-immobilising the ecu will get around this and for a few extra hundred pound's you get it remapped using a base map.

Fuel Pump- you will have to modify a TT fuel pump if you wish to use one as i have found that it uses two float arms on two sides of the tank- no big issue but i'm yet to see if it will run ok with just the one.

Battery Relocation- this doesnt have to be done if you have space, the reason i'm doing it on Naz's car is because he's running a hefty BMC and i dont want to kink the turbo intake hose with a 3" MAF on it...

New brake lines- again i've seen polo's run stock lines just fine- i plan on changing Naz's because i want to route them like the TT (accross the top of the bulkhead away from the Turbo/Manifold).

I think most golf owners choose the Cupra R master cylinder because of the mounts they choose tend to sit the cam cover close to the MC...but on a polo, most of these conversions used a polo mk7 sport engine mount being using on the drivers side and utilising the stock metal mounting point on the polo mk4/5 chassis leg- this does push the engine clear of the MC...BUT...you have to do some serious cutting to the passenger chassis leg (a fair chunk of it needs to be cut out to make room for the gearbox bellhousing).

So on the other page you said you have 90% of what you wanted to know...what else is missing? 8-)

going too get myself signed up too clubgti and read up on this clutch conversion :)

other than that i think i now know everything i need :) .. going too print all these pages out from this topic as there is so much handy infomation in here i dont want it too disapear ha ha !

i think i will relocate the battery as you say it will be good too have the room .. i want too relocate the washer bottle aswell.. and the water tank - I'm assuming this will no longer be neccessary with the new radiator? or will i still need one?

i think my shopping list is complete mate :) just know i will have 1 or 2 hickups along the way which i hope you will be more than happy too help with :)

The header tank normally sits on the drivers side on a mk4 platform 20vt car, this is just because vw extended the water lines accross the engine and located it there as the relay box sits on the side you see the water bottle in a polo.

You can maintain the same position for this bottle, although if you're looking to tidy the bay up then you can always run an inline filler neck and keep an eye on the level.

I'm hoping a MOD will sticky this to the top as i get no end of PM's regarding this conversion and i'm hoping to provide a detailed write up this year regarding this...still not for the faint hearted...but handy for the few daring people on here. 8-)

Just a few things that might be useful to anyone thinking about doing the conversion

http://www.qpeng.com/faqs/ - this has some basic questions answered about the conversion

http://www.vwt4forum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=33958

http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115595

These two sites give u some info about most of the gearbox options and their ratios (was very helpful to me)

So i think this thread basically covers it all, just needs a person to do it

As sanj sad tho.... its not for the faint hearted

CAN A MOD PLEASE STICKY THIS- this question is asked no end of times... :smoke:

As sanj sad tho.... its not for the faint hearted

Hence the reason your not doing yours naz ;) hahahaha

excellent read this thread

Sanj - Great advice and help!

Mine will be done for End of Feb/March next year as well as I'm smoothing the bay too :| and hopefully going to get a write up done :)

TIRED OF ANSWERING 20V QUESTIONS...

Thanks Mark :D i'll bear that in mind next time...once i get some pics, maybe we can tidy this thread up a little?

Hi folks, sorry not been on club polo for a while but I saw this thread and thought I'd add some completely irrelevant pics of something I'm working on

It's not a polo, it's a skoda felicia but it gives you an idea of the sort of thing you need to do... Mods please feel free to delete this post as it's not really applicable to polos.

P.s if anybody wants a 20v turbo conversion I'll do it for 3.5k if you supply the engine and gearbox

Will the welds look like that?

  • 5 months later...

LOL
