Alex, completely off topic... But i hear there thinking of closing Redline down

I think it's a wicked little car.

It's worlds better than the Fox, which was achingly bland. I think it looks better than the Lupo as well. Funky, futuristic, just a cool little car.

Engines are all-new, and one of them is sub-100g/km CO2 which means it's congestion charge exempt, and VED exempt too. Great if you live in London. I know that sounds a pit piffling compared to the Polo Bluemotion which is even lower, but that's an exceptionally low figure for a PETROL engine.

And lost direction? Really? Small, well-built, spacious cars that use next to no fuel are EXACTLY what manufacturers need in their ranges at the moment. I think it takes a lot to make a slow small car fun, but I think they've cracked it with this. Fits the Volkswagen range perfectly IMHO.

absolutely correct, Its natural for petrolheads to say its small and has low powered engines so its shit, but in these times its right on the money, It looks good, its efficient, judging by the proportions it will handle well too, the interior is high quality. so all in all its the complete package for a young person and I'm sure eventually a Wörthersee concept UP! GTI will come around and change everyones opinion on it.

Now lets slam it and put some BBS's on it.

Yes, they're thinking of closing Redline down. I'd be surprised if it doesn't go, and I feel very sorry for the employees.

But despite what Facebook douchebags think, Redline 'moving with the times' wasn't a great move.

Lets see some individuality, globalisation is taking its toll on the creativity of car designers me thinks.

It could be that they find small underpowered cars dead boring so let some other mug come up with a design and then its on with the epic plagiarism

Both matt and mike you have the "any new small car must be a clone and shit" blinkers on the fiat 500,panda and ford ka are all based on the same chassis but then its suspension setups that differentiate them from being exactly the same to drive yet all three look different and use some groundbreaking tech like the twinair engine in the 500 which is now earmarked for the next gen panda. the diesels used in the fiats are also used in the corsa and astra. parts sharing bring development costs down and therefore retail price down. now with the up! all its engines are brand new, not used in any other car at the moment. yes it has a glass tailgate like an Aygo but then again didn't the jensen interceptor use mainly glass in its tailgate? no one says an aygo looks like an interceptor. not all small cars are the same, fifteen years ago the corsa b and polo 6n would have been the cars of this size and I bet douchebags were saying they are all the same then too but would you compare a corsa b to a 6n?

take the blinkers off and enjoy the fact that VW didn't go up the swanny in the recession and that your car in a few years is being made and sold now.

Its awesome. It does resemble a c1 yes, but my sister has one and I've been thinking that would look good low and wide. Now I could do it with a vw badge on. Small cars are going to look similar due to the minimum required space needed (I.e to fit people in) but being restricted to a small size. Its not like you could put a boot on one, or else you'd have a big car, or a small saloon for 2 people. And a 3 cylinder engine is awesome. Perfectly balanced and small/light. Have you driven any of the 3-pot dervs vw make (1.4)? Fantastic little engine. As mentioned before it has tuning potential, already being charged.

Of course it's not a 'petrol head's' car thanks to the lack of size and cc, but don't write it off because it's a fashionable attitude to have

This is a good point. I haven't read up on it much but i like the idea of manufacturers going for something different than the oh so common Inline-four. I'd love to own a twin cylinder car, you'd really hear and feel it rev.

its a bit unnerving watch both cylinders move in unison with out a balancing shaft that would destroy itself.

It's the usual pattern for a parallel twin, if it wasn't a 360 degree crank then one piston would be on the firing stroke directly after the other. This way as the two move up, one fires and the other is on the lazy stroke, then vice versa for the next stroke and this way proves smoothest.

As for no balance shaft, try riding a 300cc single cyclinder 2 stroke with no balance shaft and a a single rubber mount at the cylinder head. It just bounces about! haha brilliant.

Mk4 Polos look like a Fiat Punto from some angles.

Mk3 Polos look like Novas FFS.

Mk1 Polos look a little like a Mk1 Fiesta.

Generally speaking there's a similarity between cars of a similar size. I really don't think it's anything new.

As for parts sharing, how's this?

The PSA HDi engine range. As fitted to any Peugeot/Citroen diesel car and van for most of the last decade.

Take the 1.6 115bhp(ish) unit as a starting point:

Co-developed with Ford. So Focus, Mondeo, etc with a 1.6 diesel - that's a co-developed project with PSA Peugeot Citroen.

But Ford owned a few brands, not so long ago. So it's also fitted to the Volvo C30, right up to the S80 DRIVe (the low CO2 emission version).

And they've shared it around. BMW signed an agreement with PSA to get MINI engines. So the MINI Cooper D uses the same engine.

How about the 2.2 HDI?

OK so that's in the usual suspects - it's in the Citroen C5, it's in the pre-facelift new Mondeo, it's in the Citroen C-Crosser, etc, etc. Mazda 6 2.2 diesel, same story.

This is an engine that's been around for a while though. And it's fairly well shared.

Got a Freelander with a 2.2 engine? Yep, same thing.

Got yourself a shiny new Range Rover Evoque? It shares its engine with Citroen vans!

Or how about the new 2.2 diesel Jaguar XF? You get the idea.

I missed the Frankfurt presentation where they unveiled all of the special edition versions. However on my brief visit to the VW hall to see the up! (which I really, really like), I got distracted by:

Beetle R - controversial I know, but I think it looks hard as FECK.

Polo R WRC - DO WANT

And the R-Line Polo - bit mouth over trousers but good looking anyway.

It looks alot better than the various incarnations from other european and Japanese manufacturers of the same type of car.

Let's face it, it's what the market want, and thats the reason why there are so many of this type of car on the road. Cheap to buy, tax, and run. Plus they look 'cool' to most people who know naff all about taste and cars...
