also, the injector holes may not be the ideal tapping size you see, unless they're say 6.75mm or 8.5mm, or 10.25mm etc

as for blocking the injectors i think theres was glue in with some sort of high grade glue then bolts threaded in

ps. if your guna fill the holes with weld youll need it tig welded

A budget, potentially blowing up an engine or poor performance and having to do it proper?

Or probably less than £20 for material and some free time

Because a tensioned band around such an oval shape is unlikely to hold a strong enough seal. This means a possible air leak.

An air leak on a manifold will lean out the fuel mixture on that cylinder, causing it to overheat - with that comes a serious risk of melting that piston, and subsequently loosing the engine.

look, I'm making it out of the standard manifold because i can and its something to do!

also i dont have time to wait for a manifold to come up as i need to get the engine running asap (its a daily)

i think ill be able to get it to work properly. as said before someone else did it and had good results, BUT they cut down the bolted on part of the manifold instead, whereas I'm cutting down the actual main part. looking through build thread ect i dont think that what I'm doing has actually been done before this way as its more effort.

as for sealing, the hoses are a bloody snug fit!, even without the jubilee clips. with them on i couldnt see a way it would leak.

if it dont work ill just have to wait for a 'proper' manifold to come up, wich is also gonna be home made? welded/cut by some guy in a shed.. not much difference.

i have the advantage of knowing this is 100% gonna seal onto the head of the engine well, and should also flow well, or else why would they use it in the first place :S

What's the wall thickness? You might want to consider blending the edge to the size of the hose or you'll have air nailing a corner/flat surface.

Some engine builders actually blend and smooth the ports etc then run almost a kind of knurling tool down to agitate and mix the air/fuel

its fairly thin, i thought about that too, I'm trying to get it pretty thin without sacrificinng too much strength ect. should be alright. ill get some more pictures when i next work on it :)

You could build a manifold yourself. It's what I'm going to do. You've got the picture, you just need a plate, you can drill the holes and file it all down (the same as Harris), and just get "some guy in a shed" to weld on some tubes.

i made a manifold before for my 8v engine, i cba to do it again, and again i dont have time to wait as someone may be buying my engine this week and i need.the car for work.

I've but the hoses on already, yea the manifold has rectangle-ish ports, but the other end of the hose stays round so shouldnt be too bad. Ill get pics up when i next spend some time on it

sorry to say this mate but you can mig ally you need an alloy weldign wire of the correct composistion to mathc the parent metal and the correct gas (possibly pure argon)

i know you can, but its rare people mig ally to my knowledge, usually tig , especially on an application like this due to warping

nuffin wrong with it, go for it, i jus bought a saloon with a afh on bike carbs using the same method for the manifold as this, he drove it for around a year with no issue and i drove it for few weeks and didnt notice any leak

tbf it should be fine, just not as efficient as it could be...and converting to carbs is usually for performance etc, catching what I'm throwing?

With all respect mate if you are using terms like that then you should maybe think twice before jumping in with this. Your on a budget so your cutting corners on the manifold, if you then fit it and it runs like a bag of shit due to the mani you gonna have to carry on driving it because its your daily. All the time your using it because you have no choice you could be doing irreversible damage to the engine.

It may of worked fine on the lad aboves car but it also fried skapunks engine using the same method

yeah its my daily and needed for work, but I'm not so much on a budget, as said before, I've made a manifold before, and cba to do it again. i was gonna get a proper one but noones selling one and I'm not paying bogg bros stupidly sky high prices!

so basically, i have the money for a manifold and for this conversion, just doing it this way for a bit of fun and to see if it can be done!

if not ill have to bite the bullet and get the train to work until a manifold comes up!

You're not being slated for doing something a different way, you're being slated for ignoring a technical fault and importing the resulting weakness onto your car, and then being defensive, stroppy and dismissive toward anyone trying to point it out and save you headache later.

we could all cheer you on and then stand back and wait for you to fry your engine, guess that would be fanatic community spirit :thumbsup:

You asked for advice and you got it, you asked if it had been done before and you asked if there was any reason it wouldn't work. You got the answers yes it had been done and then reasons why it wasn't a good idea, you even got a link to a thread of a lad who killed his engine doing this. If your so set on doing some thing next time why not just do it rather than asking for advice and then getting funny about it when you don't het the answers you want? End of the day its your car to do with as you like, if you wanna risk blowing it up then fair enough but I don't think this would be a very good community if we didn't try and look out for each other when we see some one doing some thing risky.

Doesn't phataz on here make good mani's at a reasonable price?

I'm not getting pissy man, i got the answers i was looking for! just because one guys ran lean and blew itself to bits, doesent mean mine will as mine will be different to his and probably seal better. at the end of the day if it works then great, if not then ill just have to wait till someone is selling a manifold! its not like its cost me anything to make this one. and I've had fun in doing so

took my engine to bits the other week, all pistons fine, all rings ok, all valves fine with no crusting on the exhaust side.

turns out one of the cam quides chewed itself to bits and put a nice 1mm deep score into my cam :(

so, the mani didn't kill my engine, but i did learn a very valuable lesson, i HATE bike carbs :lol:

take it from me dude (OP) I had SO much grief trying to get my carbs sorted, all because of the manifold

go on ebay, there's a guy called fd.tuning selling pre cut mild steel flanges every now and then for an afh, they're like £15, then go to a local fab shop and blag yourself some free tubing, weld it together, job done, manifold for under £20!!!!

it really isn't worth pissing about with the standard mani, getting a jubilee clip to hold tight on an oval pipe is not the easiest job in the world, and farting about with sealant isn't fun :lol: then there's the space issue, i've got a nice patch of bare metal on my bulk head now where one of the trumpets was constantly rubbing against it, changed to a half decent manifold and got an extra 2" of clearance!
