  • No not much has really changed... I took her back off the road in december as a bought a mk2 golf for a daily through winter. Recently pulled the polo out the garage again though, sorted a few issues

Looks really good mate.

What exactly is needed for the early look?

Is it just the grille?

  • Author

not much to update..

I eventually put the old bumpers and headlight/grill back on as i bought an early mk1 too so wanted a mix, I've finally fitted the rear suspension, had to chop the old ones out as they were seized which was fun, i gave the wheels a quick refurb and thats pretty much it... aaaaaand i bought these

Apprently its the oldest Derby in the UK. I am not sure on that, but have never bothered to investigate.

Will arrange something once my new wheels are back from being worked on :-)

I live only about 2 minutes from those cross roads

NO hibination for mine, either be on the drive having work done (depending on the daily G is doing) or out driving

This is gorgeous.. please sell it to me?

wouldn't surprise me at all, dont see many early derbys, especially ones in good nik like yours :)

well, i say hibernation, but it could be difficult for it to hibernate while i restore it  driven it for a faultless year now as a daily but its starting to show, so hopefully i'll restore it properly over the next year to use only on sunny days.............. thats the plan anyway :) (my plans are forever changing)

NEVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER  i've told my brother to never let me sell this one  its awesome :-D

Good to hear its gonna get some loving, just a standard resto or any mods? (I am doing mine over the following winter, as I don't have a garage yet, moving house so I can get a garage for the cars!!!)

Sure you won't sell it? Everything has a price.... Not that I want another one ;)

  • Author

defo won't sell  first (proper) car, so much fun to drive/own and i know i would regret it if i sold it... saying that, i did nearly sell it to buy a '77 passat a few months back, brother convinced me not to thankfully

My brother has his golf in our garage :( i'm trying to convince him to let me use it this year, but hes a stubborn baastard  I want to keep this polo with stock ride height, wheels, engine, interior... stock everything basically, except pre facelift bumpers etc. Its still got its original engine and its going strong so feel its a shame to plonk anything else in it. I'll keep the modifications for the green one as thats not in as good nik to start off with anyway :)

Been a while since i've updated this... havn't done much as i had it off the road for a year to save money and help fund my other polo restoration, but i got bored of looking at it in the garage so pulled it out, changed the clutch, removed and cleaned the carb replaced the base so its idling again and serviced it, she runs so smooth now .... then i got it mot'd, taxed and insured on my birthday and decided i wanted to spend money i didnt have much of on some bbs mahles :D

They're 13x6 and originally et13, but i got 5mm shaved off the mounting face to bring them into the arch a bit more, and changed the 175/50 tyres for 165/55s and now they sit in the arches near perfectly  Could do with a teeny bit of camber on the rear as they scrub a little with passengers, and i dont want to roll the arches

But this is how she looks at the moment

Thanks

Glad to hear its back on the road, great weather for it :-)

No not much has really changed...

I took her back off the road in december as a bought a mk2 golf for a daily through winter. Recently pulled the polo out the garage again though, sorted a few issues she had, removed the original interior to be stored away in the attic, along with an immaculate pair of front seats identical to the original black interior which I'm saving for a later date, look like they've never been sat in

IMAG0210_zpsb7a39e8c.jpg,

and then fitted this mint interior off of my old red mk1 that i've had stored away for 3 years now.

While the interior was out i redid the sound deadening and waxoiled behind door cards/inside sills. Then really just cleaned her up, fitted nos votex mudflaps, eerrrr made some textured vinyl stickers for the recess in the front valance (like early audi 50s had), insured and taxed today, went for a long drive and took some photos :)

Just need to change the front wheel bearings as one is ridiculously noisey now, i'll do that tomorrow as i have a pair of skf ones to go on

:D

Looking really smart! Have you smoothed the front wings into the valance aswell?
