Well the engine has arrived, with the most bizzare wiring loom on it I've ever seen. Its plugged into every sensor, injector etc, then bundles into the big plug that goes into the ECU. Theres No other plugs to connect it to the rest of the car! really wierd. I've noticed the seller has been on this forum after a search. Looking for a cylinder head just 2 months ago.. I wish hed just be honest with me. If its not completely fucked I dond mind keeping it. Ill gt some pics up of the dubious loom :x

With the 6n wiring loom it kinda comes in sections, you will have a small loom that goes to everything on the engine (which seems to be what you have) this then plugs into the main engine loom by (early loom) a big round screw in plug near where the thermostat housing is, or (late spec) 3 separate oblong shaped plugs on a bracket in the same place.

You can tell which loom you have by the plug that's on the engine of the engine loom

Hope this engine turns out to be a good one mate

Ok cheers guy. It would appear i have the later loom, but the plugs been cut off. Theres a bunch of 11 wires and an earth comming out from the loom next to the ECU multiplug. have a look at the pics below. Now i have a spare MK2 engine bay loom, so I'm hoping i can match up these 11 wires to the corresponding ones on the mk2 loom to plug staight into the fusebox. I'm going to need a wiring diagram though so i know whats what. have a look at the pics see what you think. If i can do it all properly I'll make a guide

any electricians on here? maybe someone with a wiring diagram? 8-)

I actually used a Haynes but for an 8V 98- on...

Most of the wire colours were the same if not all.

I started by looking at the fusebox on the interior loom. Checked what each fuse did, kept the engine ones, removed all the ones which the Mk2 loom would take care of. Then chopped the wires off and traced them back through to the engine bay. Not a small task but it worked. Plus I can scan fault codes using the diagnostic port.

I recommend using the 16V haynes if it has a wiring diagram.

Yeah that makes sence. I'm a bit pee'd that I'm in this possition wih the loom as it wasnt described to be hacked to peices, so I think my best bet is to go hunting the scrappys and try and find a full engine loom along with the fusebox and diagnostics port, as these 10 random wires I'm looking to hook up seems to be going know where at the moment.. If you see any afh's in scrappys give me a shout 8-) cheers bud

UPDATE:

Well some how i lost the ebay dispute, so I'm getting on with this engine. I've started the strip down and bought a head rebuild kit. I'm a little stuck at the moment though, as i dont have the right splined tool to remove the crank/aux belt pully to get the belt off. I've come up with a list of things i need to find to complete the conversion, so if anyone has any of the following on the cheap PM me !

Wiring loom including the fusebox, transponder box, and signal receiver to attach the key.

ARB mount blocks.

coil pack.

Does anyone have the part number for the cam belt? eurocarparts wont sell me one unless i have the reg number of the car the engine came from, even although I've confirmed the engine code lol

think thats about it for now, ill get some pics up with my progress once the heads off. Lets hope theres no supprises inside!

that sucks dude was wondering how this was going, ill keep a eye out for the parts your after. ill have to try and pop up when i get chance been mega busy, did you get those wheels in the end?

They're being dicks. Get on the ebay website and look the belt up yourself - there is only one size for the AFH.

Then either order by post or go in the shop and give them their own part number. When they give you the belt you can tell them you've done their job for them because they're too retarded.

Yep their just being lazy bastards. They did it to me the other week when I was trying to price up a release bearing for my mk2, made me go outside and memorize the plate before telling me they only sell them with clutch kits

Hi mate i have a transponder box, key and signal reciever in the for sale section, it came from a car with the round type plugs on the main loom, no loom I'm afraid i scrapped that with the car.

Hey karl, yea its comming along well. Pulling the head off tonight if i can make up a flywheel locking plate first. I've bought the parts I've listed above. call up and have a nose when u like. and no i didnt buy those wheels I've been going all out with this engine

mikey - cheers mate ill try it like that.

mclovin - I've been in touch with vic and I'm having your old injection setup off him :-D . I wanted to ask you how easy it is to 'piggy back' the new setup onto the MK2 fusebox?

pololuke - the only part i need now to complete this job is a coil. cheers mate

If I win an ebay dispute for a full refund, whos responsible for the delivery costs of sending it all back? Surely the seller?

You would have to cover the costs to send it back...

Ah well bit late now. Cant believe i lost though the item dispute, it was clearly not as described. Its now cost em £100+ to source the parts it was supposed to come with :x

Mate if you have the loom too then it will be an absolute piece of piss. Drop me a line when your ready to fit and i'll give you any help you need but all the wires were labeled when Vic had it. It's pretty much a case of splicing some wires into the ignition wiring and running a live to the fuel pump

Yeah I've bought the entire setup that you gave him. he said its still labeled etc :) do you have the rev counter working in yours? cant f'in wait to get rid of this damn carb !!!

Yep and the wire is there and labeled on that loom too. Not sure if the mk2 uses the same signal as the mk3 tho (i've got mk3 dash and clocks in mine see). Sure I read some where that mk2 rev counters use a signal from the earth but I maybe wrong, anyone know?

Ahh I see yeah that's why your rev counter workw then lol. I did fit a mk3 dash in my first mk2 which I still have abandon in the garden . Only rwason I haven't put it in this car us down to the welding of the steerin column bracket. Might be tempted to do it the same time as the engine... mk3 dash is much sleeker!

well I've just paid for the bits from vic. I'm gonna go ahead with the conversion sooner than planned as i had a breakdown earlier and the car is now abandon 8 miles from home lol (alternator belt failure). Just got to get the head skimmed and pressure tested then its all going in on the week of the 14th with a bit of luck. . still undecided on the mk3 dashboard and interior loom.. :?

off out for a few beers tonight to celebrate my mates 30th. update tomorrow with pics if I'm not to hung over!

I doubt the mk3 dash is essential mate, people have been putting GT engines in mk2's for years so some one must now how to get the mk2 rev counter working with the later style coil pack setup

small update. I've got the wiring loom/transponder/fuel pump delivered. I can kinda see how it hooks up. just a few things I'm wondering.

Do I keep my existing starter motor wiring.. seems the most logical thing to do.. and the same with the alternator as i can see you've nicely labeled it up lol. So which wires do i 'piggy back' off the mk2 fusebox for the 6n fusebox to come on with the ignition. I can see the 2 main red and brown wires will just go the the battery terminals.

Oh and this is the other thing. I'm in the process of doing the head gasket as it was susspected to have failed before i bought the engine due to over heating issues. The only problem is, I've got the head off the block, and the gasket seemed to be in good condition and not visually damaged anywhere.. I'm obviously going to fit the new one, but is there anything else that would have caused the over heating (just incase it wasnt the gasket)

The only things I've got left to collect before i can put it in the car is a coil and a set of ARB blocks. once i get them I'm away.

I won this last night ...

G40 brake setup

Not a bad price too.

Last thing.... If anyones interested in building a skoda felicia AFH. I have for sale, A custom engine mount, gearbox adapter plate, and flywheel.

Alt and starter wiring depends on which items your using. When I use the mk4 alt and starter I tend to use the mk4 wiring from the mk4 fuse box just for the simple fact that the wiring will have the correct plugs on. Where as if i use the mk2/3 items I stick with the early wiring for them.

The mk4 wires splice into the cars ignition wiring so the ignition switch is operating both fuse boxes

  • Author

.Ok cheers mate . I think ill be using both mk2 starter and alt.where on the fusebox do the spliced wires connect to? If you thought you were bad with electrics you've seen nothing yet lol. I get the rest of the loom tho. I don't have a charcoal canister but isn't that somthing to do with keeping the co2 output low? I never ean one on my nz'd mk2 so it should be fine.

I just spliced them into the ignition wires rather than putting them into the cars fuse box

No reason to run the charcoal canister I guess, I just left it there for OEM scene points
