UNLOCKING mpg display?

Evening,

My 9N3 doesn't display the mpg etc, I'm assuming it was an option from the factory that the first owner of my car didnt select!

Just wondering if anyone has managed to find a way of unlocking this display to show the range, instant mpg etc? Or is it literally only VW that can do it?

Any knowledge on this would be much appreciated!
