MOT test today... failed. Pretty hard too.

-Steering rack gaiter split

-Seat belt anchorage prescribed area corroded (Inadequately repaired from last time, apparently)

-Knackered rear wheel bearing

-Corrosion at suspension mounting point

-Front suspension ball joint totally shagged, marked as dangerous

Several advisories:

-Windscreen chip

-Exhaust has minor leak

-Battery Insecure (???)

-Different sized tyres on front and rear wheels (???)

-Oil leak

-Outer sills showing some rust

Battery is probably not secured by the clamp properly.

There's a hole the size of a credit card in the floor! It looks like someone's tried to patch it up with fibreglass or something, but that's no good because its next to the seatbelt mount.

WHAT. That garage sound like they're trying to mug you off!! Battery insecure should fail an MOT btw. Corrosion?! WHERE?! I had this on a ramp and it was fine! Accepted a few scabs, but no holes?! And advising different sized tyres?! Its allowed! Just has to be same on the same axle (fronts have to be same and rears have to be same, but fronts can be different to rears). And advising 'sills showing rust', i work in a garage and we've never downed that!

Please get it through the MOT :( Also interested in where the corrosion is near suspension mounting?!

There is indeed a hole in the floor, it was covered with fibreglass. It looks like a jack went through it, and its corroded around the edge. It's right next to the driver's lower seatbelt mount.

Steering rack boot is being done, had trouble getting the new one on earlier and it was late so I'm doing that tomorrow.

Rear wheel bearings were advisories on the last MOT certificate, so I'm doing that anyway.

The TCA didn't actually need doing. I called a mechanic out to help me get the new one on and I showed him the old one and he gave the suspension a test for play (he does MOTs too). He reckons I got shafted on the MOT with that and the price of the welding. He recommended a place down the road that works with older and classic cars.

And this car IS getting through its fucking MOT. And I'm not paying £530 for it, I reckon this is getting sorted for ~£250 overall.

I've been ripped off.

The TCA ball joint is fine, I've had it checked by two seperate indepedent mechanics.

The rear wheel bearing is also perfectly fine, again checked by an independent.

Combined they tried to do me out of £135 worth of parts and labour, and I've wasted about £50 on parts that I don't need.

That's HMC in Patchway, nr Bristol by the way. I'll be complaining to VOSA.

good lad! glad to hear, yeah was about to say, because they're old bearings you have to make sure you tighten them up the right amount, which is what i done (as well as greased) when i owned it.

oh yeah i remember the foot well now, forgot all about that! Think the spanner before me may had bodged it but it didn't look too rusty when i owned it?

has this got an MOT now or not yet? If you go in and kick off at the garage and say your going to complain to visa, they'll do your MOT for free and it WILL pass

Got it through the MOT last month, needed a bit of welding doing.

Then another fun thing happened.

A few days ago I was driving along a country lane at night, and some nice person had left half a brick in the road. The car sits on lowered rear springs. Things went as well as could be expected.

Long story short, I sit here with a new fuel tank on my bedroom floor. Fitting it is simple, but I don't really have much room to do the work atm so I might just take it to the garage.

Hello! HRM in Fishponds are decent, slightly unreliable on ETA of getting the work done but they are good none the less.

Still going strong? I miss this and i see myself looking at another old Polo...

Oh yeah, he's fine. Got to get a new battery that's all. Not had much of a chance to do work on it tbh
