What camshaft is this?

Hi everyone,

As above, really! This camshaft came with a head I bought but I'm not sure what it's from. Clearly from an injection engine as no fuel pump lobe and higher lift than a GT cam, but with little duration.

Any help?

Golf Variant not sure on other details, its the same as the one I run in my engine.

should also have other markings stamped on it.

is there a letter below the 032?

i have an AEE camshaft in my hand with the same markings, higher lift but less duration lobes as the GT.

i cannot see the letter under the 032 marking, but on mine its 032 s and on the other side WTR 7

GT camshaft is 030 AF

Cymro - can I ask what engine you're running and why you've gone with this cam? I was going to play it safe and stick with a GT cam but if there's any benefit to be had from this cam then I'll run it instead.

There may be letters aye, but I only grabbed the one photo before storing the head :(

Mines on a ZZR 1200 carbed AAV with 7mm valves, main reason is bikes normally go with lift over duration.

Think Ubris has the right letters.

The higher lift makes up for the shorter duration.

Ignore the state of the second one its not been in a car for 2/3 years and has been doing sterling work as a window ornament. :lol:

And this is why I went with it explained........(explained better than my recovering from a 3 day wedding celebration brain can currently achieve)

The camshaft "lift" is the resultant net rise of the valve from its seat. The further the valve rises from its seat the more airflow can be realised, which is generally more beneficial. Greater lift has some limitations. Firstly, the lift is limited by the increased proximity of the valve head to the piston crown and secondly greater effort is required to move the valve's springs to higher state of compression. Increased lift can also be limited by lobe clearance in the cylinder head construction, so higher lobes may not necessarily clear the framework of the cylinder head casing. Higher valve lift can have the same effect as increased duration where valve overlap is less desirable.

Higher lift allows accurate timing of airflow; although even by allowing a larger volume of air to pass in the relatively larger opening, the brevity of the typical duration with a higher lift cam results in less airflow than with a cam with lower lift but more duration, all else being equal. On forced induction motors this higher lift could yield better results than longer duration, particularly on the intake side. Notably though, higher lift has more potential problems than increased duration, in particular as valve train rpm rises which can result in more inefficient running or loss of torque.

Cams that have too high a resultant valve lift, and at high rpm, can result in what is called "valve bounce", where the valve spring tension is insufficient to keep the valve following the cam at its apex. This could also be as a result of a very steep rise of the lobe and short duration, where the valve is effectively shot off the end of the cam rather than have the valve follow the cams’ profile. This is typically what happens on a motor over rev. This is an occasion where the engine rpm exceeds the engine maximum design speed. The valve train is typically the limiting factor in determining the maximum rpm the engine can maintain either for a prolonged period or temporarily. Sometimes an over rev can cause engine failure where the valve stems become bent as a result of colliding with the piston crowns.

The lift is something silly and you have to be very careful with belt timing as a tooth out is enough to get severe valve slap. I think a vernier would unlock a lot more potential from it.

Aye, hence the topic - sorry, should have said at the start.

This 'AEE'(?) cam has a good couple of mm on the GT cam.

Nice work cymro. But the lift and duration of the gt seems to be greater than that of the aee. Or am I being special

032 is on that list - it's from the ABU.

Lucky Strike/Prankstar: there are 2 GT cams.

while the AEE has more lift than the early GT cam its duration is 15 degrees less so to make up for the shorter lift on the early GT cam they lengthened its duration by the late cam they gave it .8mm more lift but shortened the duration by 4.5 degrees.

Remember that they also need the pistons and valves to clear each other and on a normal road going car the performance trade off is to have drivability throughout the range while not ideling like a bag of spanners. :lol:

WTR followed by a number is some sort of manufacturing stamp, lots of the 8v cams have it. ;)

The 030 or 032 number followed by a letter (where appropriate) maps directly to a VW part number. That is all you need to identify the cam. So 032 = ABU cam, WTR lettering and following numbers are not relevant.

so are them figures measured from 1mm off the valve seat...and newman specs measured from the seat?

if so iv just ordered a cam with longer duration but less lift? lol

8mm extra lift? Quite the change that :lol:

Thankfully I know how engines work so I'm not coming into this blind - the camshaft clearly fits in the head, after all! My biggest concern is if the lift on the cam I have fitted is going to be too great for the compression range of the standard polo GT valve springs, but it seems not so that should be ok.

Idling's not a problem on ITBs so I'm not worried there. Lumpy engines sound awesome anyway :D

The only odd thing is the lift difference between the GT cam I have and the cam in question seems very large, even if it is an earlier GT cam. Purely academic though - maybe mine's just been ground down lots :lol:

AFAIK the VW lift is just that, so a 10mm lift VW OEM cam will have the same lift as a Newman with 10mm lift.

But a 219° VW OEM cam is more comparable to something like a 250° aftermarket cam. Catcams website has some very useful data as they quote their durations both conventionally, and also 1mm off the seat.

My AEE has an 032F which is 9.6mm lift, 205 & 203 duration

Just remembered the Newman I ordered is a 268 and isnt listed on site LOL. I know its 268/268 but not sure on lift as I was gonna run a 264! Hmm!

Their 264 lists 10.15mm lift...the 270 lists 10.41...not sure on the 268 though...PhilJ just informed me a 268 was avail haha, this could be fun with .8mm off the head :ninja:

Take the leading 3 letters of the full ETKA part number for a given cam, then add the suffix letter (if any) from the end. This will be the camshaft ID that is stamped into the part.

E.g.

030109101AH for the ABD becomes 030AH.

032109101 for the ABU becomes 032.

etc.

The WTR part is some sort of manufacturing batch number or whatever - to ensure traceability amongst the parts.

In the case where there is just 032 and only a WTR marking on the camshaft, then it's from an ABU. There's no suffix letter in the part number to add after the 032, probably because the ABU was the first of the larger small block engines introduced in the Mk3 Golf in '92, pre-dating the other 032'X' cams used in the 6N and its sister vehicles.

So, if it's 032 and no letter, it's ABU. If it's 032 and there's a letter, it's from a different 6N motor.

The point of the list was to start collating some information, so that people can see the facts we know, rather than relying on 'forum facts' and internet rumour. Hopefully as time progresses, people can add to the list.

That Newman cam is a copy of a Schrick cam. So have a look at their spec for reference. ;)

I get you now. Seems like some have WTR 5 and others WTR 7 so those would be factory/machining markers.

In my pic under the VW stamp there is a mark but not sure what it is and in the OP's picture there is a marking under the 032.
