I did abit of a search on here before choosing a camshaft and there was a few people that had ran a 272 without getting any piston to valve contact.

I doubt you will notice any drop in peak power between the 270 & 272 anyway.

Great progress as usual!

Did you end up with 272? Next year if all goes well we're going to do the bottom end and try to get her running something more hillclimb spec. in the cam department. Could be up near the 300's if the clearance is ok and with 11:1ish CR.

Other big plan is to try and get the parts to do a 4.4:1 bolt on final drive with a G40 gearbox. So GT ratios but with a limited slip diff. That'll also be next year at earliest though.

Nah i opted for a 268, i'm running an ABD bottom end and wanted to keep abit of bottom end etc.

Good idea on the bottom end/gearbox though!

where do you plan on finding a 4.4:1 bolt on FD from? i ask, coz i'd quite like one too.

Well it's 4.4:1 or as close as possible...might need to be smidge lower. I've been told that you can get a bolt (or rivet in OEM terms) on final drive for the 085 box that'll work on the ATV but give you the 4.4. It's from a Mk5 Polo diesel....need to pin point exact box code first....but a little look at VAGCAT threw up a few possibilities.

lowest i had heard of was 4.2, and then some sort of fabled 4.6 which i've never actually found.

Even 4.2 would be an improvement over G40? GT is 4.4 isn't it....4.6....jeepers!

4.267 FD in a DCD gearbox form a 1.0 1996 polo.

4.0:1 FD ia a polo GT gearbox.

4.56:1 FD in some sort of ibiza but only seems to have been sold abroad. i have the part numbers and orderd one with SEAT but it never turned up.

So where do these hillclimbs take place? And isit costly to enter?? I'm seriously thinking about building a mk2/3 hillclimb car like yours/ hedges kinda style next year depending on money

There are hillclimbs all over the country. Being from Scotland I'll just be doing those north of the border. If you go on the MSA website you should be able to find info. Google 'British hillclimb' or 'British hillclimb and sprint.'

I think it's about £120 per weekend up here. If you counted the number of minutes racing you get it looks a bit steep...but that's not the point. The very fact you only get X amount of runs is what makes it do compelling. Plus at 2 out of the 3 venues here we get to camp, so it's a real good social thing too!

Okay mate, will take a look when i get home! Thanks for the info :)

Standard GT is 4.063. G40 is 3.333

a GT box with a 4.2 gives you 132mph at 7500rpm which is still, very long.

unfortunately not much else exists unless you can find one from the father land.

can't say 100%, but i remember reading this guide on clubg40 when i had differential-->gearbox issues, and it seems to suggest that you can in fact fit a differential that is suitable for a g40 gearbox into a gt gearbox also.

guide: http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,280.0.html

mainly this: "Firstly, you need to make sure you have the right type of gearbox to fit a diff to. It boils down to whether the crown wheel on the existing diff is bolted on or pressed on. If you have a proper G40 gearbox (code ATV or something like CEH for later ones - don't quote me on the later code though!) or a GT gearbox (not sure of codes off the top of my head) then you will be OK as these all have bolted on crown wheels."

I see good stuff!

I fitted a 272 Dbilas camshaft in my 3F and noticed it has shifted the power further up the rev range. Above 5.5k it loves it! The rest of the engine doesn't much  . Could do with the head gasflowing to get the best from it, which i see you've had some decent work done!

I bought these mounts a year or two ago and have had them sitting in a drawer ever since. Made of stiffer rubber than standard they should help locate the engine better/stop any slop. Going from my experience of stiffer mounts in the Clio they'll also make the engine a heck of a lot louder and put more vibrations through the shell...the girls love it...jokes...

6996446787_0b83658b6e_z.jpg

If these are the bushes from the group buy a while back i can confirm they are stiff. Can barely move the engine on the mounts now by hand. Suprised at how much difference they have made!

Doesn't feel horrendous through the chassis either tbh.

I'd come to the conclusion that with and undulating hill climb track, 100+ hp, a 4.267 final drive and the 3.455 first gear, it'll be hard work to put the power down in first, then you are screwed by the ratio drop to second, closest ratio available is 2.087, a huge ratio change in motorsport terms. The main problem with the 085 is you are fixed with the FD, 1st and 2nd gear ratios all together, unless you have a custom set of shafts made up $$$$.

Unless you plan to build an engine that screams, I think the 3.875 FD from the CWX (16v) box is a better solution, same stupid first gear ratio, except the power is now more tractable, closer second gear ratio (2.095) and 3/4/5 can be fitted from any 085 box my choice would be 1.469/1.122/0.891, from inspection of the boxes i've stripped 3rd and 4th are interchangeable (1.182/1.250 4th gear maybe?).

Tyre size is the best way to tune the between the VW options. The 3.875 is a bolt on crownwheel too, whether it'll go on a G40 diff I dont know. Quaife supply a drawing of the basic mounting dimensions for their ATB diffs.

There is a 084 with a 4.571 FD, GG box, where you'll find one though is anyones guess...

Look forward to seeing this finished, whats your timescale? run this year?

tyre size? what about brake clearance? plus theres not that many tyre size choices in competition tyres in 13" and 14"

the smallest 13" i found was Dunlop do a 185 530 13.

What about the yokohoma 175/50/13?

Tyre Choices:

Yokohama A048 175/50R13 Soft/Med Compound

Yokohama A048 175/60R13 Soft/Med Compound

Kumho V70A 175/60R13 Soft/Med Compound

Avon ZZR185/55R13

Avon ACB10 185/50R13

I think I am going to go with the A048's in 175/50 or 175/60. The Avon ZZR's were tempting but a bit 'big.' Not fancying ACB10's as they are cross ply and that's an unknown for me. Have to pick tyres off the 1A/1B road legal list.

I've got BBS RA's from a G40 and I've got slightly wider 13's as well...6 or 6.5 I think. Both will be suitable for brakes. Likely to use one set to get to events and the other with the competition tyres.

It is sometime this year. Suspension and chassis etc. should all be done by end of May I hope. Then it's onto the engine...only issue there is ££££'s. TRying to buy a house at same time as well which wasn't the plan at the end of last year.

Have recently had thoughts about ditching the throttle bodies in favour of something simpler like a G40 transplant...but I also feel I need to keep going and honour the original plan.

175 50 13 is 25mm smaller than the 185 530 13 dunlop in diameter, so would be the smallest you can probably get. That's the tyre originally designed for minis with 13s.

Pretty Fly for a White Guy

Sent a fly wheel I had away to a chap who goes by the user name Hotgolf on Club GTI. One week later and a Pay Pal transaction for £65 it's back.

Here is a photo of it before as it was removed...

6996661948_7b7587d177_z.jpg

...and here are a couple of pics of the finished article. Down to 3.9 KG. It's been done to be safe and not have too much of an adverse effect on idle. Last thing you want with a lightened flywheel is it becoming too weak and giving up at 7500RPM. I hear it's about the same weight as a Sachs racing item give or take 100 grams.

Just need a thou taken off to reface the driven face.

7142749253_aa170a91be_z.jpg

I also purchased a G40 clutch and pressure plate. It's a little bigger than the GT item which should help with the cars predicted power/torque. I didn't see the need (nor did I have the cash) for a full blown motorsport job. Hopefully this will put up with getting side stepped 5-6 times a weekend...

They are all bolted up the car with fresh new bolts. Happy days!

Hubba Hubba!!!

Just back from the garage that's local to where the Polo stays. Really nice blokes who have now done a few bits and bobs for me. I think I'll send her down there for an MOT when all is finished.

In go new hubs and genuine VAG front wheel bearings...must have been feeling flush. I need TCA's to arrive then I can get slap them on the car, woop!

Offering them up to the car today confirms they are indeed a lot shorter than stock...can't imagine I'll be winding them down at all really!

Got a thread up in the suspension section of the forum to double check I've got everything together the right way around! If you fancy a read/have anything to input then I point you here: http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=283036

Looks good! You going to convert to studs? I know timed pitstops aren't part of hillclimbing, but if you're taking wheels on/off on a regular basis, they're so much easier!

Also will try to get you a set of adjustable TCA asap- but don't hold your breath!

Hey Pete, what studs are they?

I've got them on the rear of mine but need to redo the fronts, want some decent ones.

Always liked working on cars with studs as you are right, makes life easier. I'd quite happily ask the same question as herr Pinches above.
