Whats the spec by the way?

id have to dig it out and look but its a clarke something 110. which was over £200 and to it there was a TIG kit at £130 odd.

not cheap- and that was a scratch type not trigger. (i used a block of carbon next to what I'm welding to strike with accuracy)

Ah right, its one of them DC mma stick welder with a scratch start tig torch attachment. I was looking at those. But since I've found a 160amp dc tig/mma welder with high frequency start, pre/post gas flow and 2 years warranty from r-tech for £350.

Looks like that's the one ill be going for, need to do abit of saving up though!

your beat off looking for a 2nd hand DC and AC one so you can do alloy! you can do jobs to pay for it then- theres a £5k proper setup at my work and the stuff created for my car would have costs loads otherwise- and when you think of all the bike carb manifolds and boost pipe/ intercooler stuff tou could do for people itl pay for itself soon enough.

just a bit of a bugger it has to use argon gas which aint cheap and it uses it quite quick

Which one do you have Arun? one capable of AC output obviously, i was looking at the lowest priced ACDC unit, but for how much i'd be welding ally it would be pointless!

i can, its just that Tig is quite hard to learn to get right. if you didnt know i would have said have a look at courses. the time it takes to blow thro a car panel is bloody tiny and with car panels being glued together its difficult in some areas. i used to cheat massively on my polo- id mig the area in difficult places first and use the tig to smooth it out as access to some areas restricts you being able to feed the stick.

I have to admit i haven't tryed TIG welding anything below 1mm thick before, so it will be a nice learning curve.

We have some awesome welders at ITM power anyway, so there's plenty of people i can ask 8-)

its really different to welding thick stuff- very easy to burn holes! id suggest practicing car panels at work with a proper good tig with some mentoring so you can get it spot on before you do it on you bay (which is looking sweet may i add) and the last thing i should probibly mention is that where pressed shapes are in car panels the tig will blow thro them parts quick as hell as there thinner on them in areas, I'm sure you will know that but for others reading this thread its useful to know.

I've done similar before, and I've found that the Mig filler causes massive contamination?! :-( When I've used the TIG over areas tacked with MIG it always becomes massively porous in that area :cry: I dunno if its to do with the soot that is released onto the surrounding area or it being within the metal, but it happens whether I clean it off or not!

Max, its great that you've got a TIG and you can use it for whatever you want, but I very much doubt you will use it on car panels for any longer than a couple of attempts. A MIG set at higher amps, used intermittently on a car panel will give you much better results than a TIG set on very low amps, used continuously ;)

The only way you can get results using TIG on such thin metal is if you can weld as fast as lightning :lol: You need to be able to move the torch very quickly yet maintain the tiny arc length (I.E keep the tungsten close to the workpeice) and feed the filler in with your other hand steadily, accurately and rapidly. And doing them both, moving along at the same time, quickly, whilst probably crouched or knelt down is extremely difficult. If you were sat at a desk welding thin sheet it'd be a different story :lol:

I should also add that as The Prodigy said, the gas takes the absolute piss :roll: Not just the price of it, but the rate it is used at!

We'll see how it goes to be honest, i've got an OK mig welder if needs be.

Practice makes perfect, so that's what i'll do. Practice practice practice!

its to do with what wire you use- its the flux cored mig wire which does the damage with regards to porosity- you need to use the correct wire (if which i remember - its the crap stuff no1 uses that you need to use)

Thats for posting that nige, i actually got one in with the instruction manual of the welder from them.

Tryed this out in MMA mode yesterday, its a great peice of kit for the money.

I'll be testing it in TIG mode tommorow afternoon....
