opinions wanted mk2 suspension

Featured Replies

Right I'm looking for a suspension kit for my mk2 but want a good quality ride with still having a decent drop.I've only ever run phills budget 60mm kits before and there a little harsh for what i want now as i want the car to function as a car and be able to go anywhere.

The kits I've found that I'm interested in are

H&R cup kit 60/40 but believe rears are adjustable to 60?

weitec ultra gt 60/60

spax psx 60/60

kw 60/60

The H&R,weitec and spax are all roughly the same price and the kw is about £50 more but all come from top brands but i have no experiance with any of them.So what I'm after is a ride thats fairly smooth and not too choppy and to no whether any of these kits are worth the extra £200+ over phills budget kits

Any input appreciated

cheers

luke

After much trawling through compatibility information and comparing numbers to identify any patterns, and with the valued assistance of the Club GTI forum, i have come to a decision. GT front springs

For a truly compliant, factory-like ride i've used standard fitment Bilstein dampers, with 40mm springs mildly trimmed to 50mm. The excess coil removed was in the tightly wound 'helper' area of all four springs and didn't affect the seating, but did remove absolutely all the preload on the fronts (still an MoT pass).

And this only put me 50mm down.

But any lower out the box and it's likely to be considerably harder - speculation, just because i haven't experienced a better quality 60mm kit than the budget red/yellow kits popular.

Not what you're asking but just a thought.

Saf has had good experience with both H&R and KW. So much so, I have bought his KW set off him. From all accounts, H&R are very good, and i was going to buy a set, except i bought the KWs instead. No experience as of yet (not fitted) but the cheap kits are truly horrendous imo. Can almost feel the car falling apart as it crashes about

You really cant go wrong for the money with the H&R kit, you just don't get the "crashyness" of the budget kits and if you buy from Venom Motorsport they're pretty reasonable

VW Polo Mk 3 G40 86C (90-94) 35mm 35mm £346.14

VW Polo Mk 3 Including G40 & Coupe 86C (90-94) 60mm 40mm £346.14

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is the kit I run, its 60mm on the front. The back, unlike the cheap kits doesn't have the 5 levels of adjustment, its fixed at a 60mm drop but comes with a 20mm ally spacer which raises it up to a 40mm drop

Totally worth the money, especially if you have driven with cheap kits to compare it to

personally I rate the H&R kit for the road... its a bit too soft for the track.

ECP do the H&R and there is a club discount

Not on modified/performance items ^^^

Luke, if you need, I have a pair of used (only covered about 8k) FK front shock absorbers, from what i've heard they're beter than TA Technix/budget kits of same quality. Decent springs pop up from time-to-time infact, there's a Weitec set of springs and rear shocks for sale here for about £40 too so you could have a decent setup for not much. I do understand the the importantness of a nice new kit though!

Have you any pics of your mk2? Is it your Comet blue one mate?

edit: my Brother has the Weitec kit on his Mk2 square and I was thoroughly impressed when I used the car for a few months. Big thumbs up from me.

got spax dampers on mine at the mo, but with std g40 springs, been very impressed with the ride quality (they are the adjustable damping ones) miles better than budget shortened dampers

Not on modified/performance items ^^^

they have stated in thier section a price of circa 360 with the discount

Thread resurrection time!

So one of the front springs that are about 2yr old on my GT has snapped. I'm trying to work out if VW classic parts lists them, but i'm bogged down in part numbers and the 3F doesn't seem to be listed....3 paint dots, 2 pink dots and one yellow....it's getting daft! Can anyone put this to bed? I'd like to get a price for genuine ones.

Alternatively, what springs are any good for standard ride height? There's a lot out there, Bilstein B3 are out of stock.

I don't want to be changing them every 2yr.

I can find plenty for 1.0 Polos.

My So Wird's Gemacht Polo book says the GK engined mk2 has 20mm shorter front springs and strengthened strut as standard.

Lowering springs are usually progressive.

Standard coil springs can be linear as enough space.

So the 3F engined spring might be different too but I can't find a different VAG part number.

(Except 2 yellow, 1 orange paint mark is a VAG 867411105952).

For standard ride height GSF Car Parts claim a Lesjöfors 4004230 is suitable for 3F.

So do these people.

https://www.trodo.com/coil-spring-lesjofors-4004230?currency=GBP

And Lesjöfors themselves in their online catalog

https://web.tecalliance.net/lesjofors/en/parts/cars

for a 57kW Polo.

Are lesjofors robust enough to put up with Tory potholes?

Lesjöfors been making springs for 160 years. They recently did the lowering springs for the 2150kg Polestar 270 BST, which is three times the weight of Polo mk2. Fit those.

When TopGear dropped a Polo from a crane it was the suspension that survived the impact. How old are your shock absorbers and top mounts?

Shocks and top mounts are same age as springs, 2yrs. It was all done at once.

The main problem is material quality, and material fatigue. You need to get very good spring steel if you want it to last, even good companies are now buying chinese and indian steel stock.

Sweden's not yet moved to electric arc furnaces so should be good quality.

Or get H&R cup kit with 35mm drop and add 15mm Superpro spacers for a net -20mm.

Yeah, don't want to lower it, too many speed bumps and potholes

Are there any other springs off a Polo Fox or Genesis etc. that will fit a GT? I can check the engine codes if someone has any to offer up.

so for the front the part you need is 871411105 951, which is 1 dab yellow and 1 dab brown. at the back its the same springs for them all except the g40, which is 867511115 951, 1 mark white

This is what someone from Club GTI has told me. They aren't listed on VW classic parts, but may be worth an email.

After much trawling through compatibility information and comparing numbers to identify any patterns, and with the valued assistance of the Club GTI forum, i have come to a decision.

GT front springs are 871 411 105/951 1xYW, 1xBN paint dots. These are basically unavailable from most brands, though some retailers are listing springs for the GT from manufacturers that i thought to be out of stock.

Part nr. 861411105J/952 seems to be the part number that has superseded the above, and checks out fairly consistently in compatibility information, so i think these fit a GT.

Part nr. 861411105J has sketchy and inconsistent fitment details for the GT, but patterns begun to emerge in cross referenced part compatibility information, and i think these will go on a GT.

I've placed an order on Autodoc for a pair of 105J/952 by Lesjofors, and a pair of 105J by Bilstein (these are the B3), so i can place them side by side and see if there is any difference at all. I can also measure the coil diameters with the verniers.

None of the above part numbers are available from VW classic parts. It's been quite a challenge to establish exactly what it is that retailers are offering, and i suspect that the buyers at various retailers have little idea exactly what OEM part numbers correspond correctly to their product.

The Bilstein springs go on fine and sit the front at the right height, the crappy things that snapped sat it too high. The Bilstein B3s have an extra coil too, so a better product, and the same heightas the Lesjofors ones.

Hi Mr Brightside,

currently having the same issues as you with regards to getting replacement springs at factory height.

I have a 1994 Mk2f GT. Any idea where i can source some as everywhere seems to be out of stock.

Am i right in thinking the front springs should be 297mm in length?
