EBAY UK MK2 G40 NO RESERVE

Featured Replies

Don't worry about it Luke, I read your message but I can't reply I must have sent too many messages and triggered the spam detection software  - no pms for me till Friday!

I'm currently figuring out which bits to offer as sets, how much etc. I will probably auction the more valuable parts at 99p start and see how it goes. I'm going to start taking a lot of photos! I will be selling the parts in stages, starting with the interior and badges and possibly the splitter after some careful removal.

After much thought I realised that really from the feedback i've been getting it would be best to sell the whole car so it will be going back up for bidding on eBay as a whole sum of its parts. I'm going to make it very clear what it is and that it is not for driving in that shell. I'm also going to go take lots of pictures.

OK here's my new listing that i'm going to put up tonight, any feedback regarding content would be appreciated, please let me know if you think I should include anything else, or anything that you think others would like to know,

This auction is for the sale of a car as components for breaking or as donor parts for a mk2 G40 conversion project.

We have owned and driven this car for 3 years, after failing its MOT for a small hole in the sill and a 27% brake imbalance. I can’t weld, and the garage labour costs would have been more than I could afford. I decided to sell, and listed the car. After putting up the listing I was made aware via the Club Polo forum that this car, which is a reshell of a silver right hand drive car, should have the VIN of the donor chassis. My V5 and the plate on the car both have retained the VIN of the original.

According to VOSA this means it would be either a "Radically Altered Vehicle" of a "Vehicle built from parts", which would required extra testing. The identity of the shell should have been retained to make a modified Coupe S, rather than a G40 with a new body and thus this car cannot be sold as roadworthy.

OK so back to the car..

The original mk2 Polo G40 was imported from Germany in around 1989 as a coupe S and was found in a poor state by the previous owner. The car had done over 360,000 km so a donor engine was rebuilt by the previous owner and fitted with G40 pistons. The supercharger is also not the original found with the car, though is the correct early type. I bought the car in the beginning of 2009 and it has always run very well, idles nicely and it has never had any problems in running or start up.

The supercharger is an extremely rare mk 2 model, When I bought the car in 2009, I sent if for a stage 2 service at Jabbasport. The following parts were replaced- main bearing (drive end casing), main bearing oil seals, eccentric shaft bearings, sealing ring collar, apex seal (casings), auxiliary drive belt (wide), diffuser bearing, diffuser oil seals and apex seal. The supercharger did not need any internal repairs. I have all the paperwork and followed the care instructions. The supercharger has not been ported or had any material removed from it and retains its original twin v drive belt configuration. No modifications have been made to the engine.

The original airbox is fitted and a K&N panel filter which I bought in 2009. This car has an early type intercooler, as opposed to the later type fitted to facelift Polos.

The car comes with matching black and white interior, overall the seats are good, there is a small 2cm long section on the drivers seat which needs a repair (small rip in the leathery bit near the seam). There is an area of damage on the drivers door card around an attachment screw and slight fraying around the handle area, both door cards would benefit from some new plastic clips. The windows wind down nicely, there is an original vw radio cassette player and replacement standard size speakers fitted which I bought in my first year of owning the car. We have fitted a MPH clock for convenience, however the original German G40 km/hour clock is included.

During my ownership I have fitted factory standard powder coated G40 suspension and had a new windscreen professionally fitted. The tyres are the wider G40 standard type with black steel rims including a 5th full sized spare. The car has the original wide G40 manifold and exhaust (25 years old and still going strong!). Because of its age it has no catalytic converter. Mechanically the car is sound and has had a new clutch, wheel bearings and 2 new front CV joints.

Overall the body structure is good, the bonnet, wings driver’s door (on the left) and boot have little or no apparent rust and would all be suitable for use as donor items, the passenger door is rusting on the underside (see photo). The grille is in good condition, all lights work and do not have any cracks in them.

The car comes with original G40 badges front and back, these are very rare! (Note they are not visible in all the photos as I temporarily removed them so that they do not go missing!) It also has the original splitter, an exceptionally rare piece which I have examined closely and it looks to be in excellent condition with no cracks.

This car is for collection only. Though running fine, it has been declared SORN. The winning bidder must be able to collect and transport the car in an appropriate manner or at your own risk. Winning bidders are required to pay a minimum 50 pounds deposit (or full value if the winning bid is below 50 pounds) via paypal within 48 hours of the auction ending.

This car is not being sold elsewhere and will be going to the highest bidder, I have no expectations or price in mind so will not be accepting any offers outside of the auction.

Good luck bidding for this item, if you have not already done so, please read my full description. If you would like to ask any questions about the car I will be happy to answer them as best I can.

Much better advert, less confusing and more informative.

Time for bed before this gets silly

Quitter!

So, going on what you have all said about it what is it really worth.

I mean, if you had just won the lottery what would be the max you would pay for it??

Only what the engine is worth. A grand, perhaps, because the charger and intercooler bits are rare. I wouldn't be running it in that shell though, at the least it'd be just as well off in a right hand drive GT-G40 replica - at least the steering wheel would be on the right side. You could cut the metalwork for the servo off a Mk3 - seen that done on a Mk1. It'd be a decent car then!

yeah +1 on this, the g lader and intercooler's are relatively hard to come by

  • 2 weeks later...

I won it. I have the last collection of original and genuine full panels for a MK2 GT G40 (correct title)

I have been waiting for something of this nature to come up for 12 years. Worth it? I have the money spare, so to me, yes.

DO I CARE IF IT IS A RESHELL??? NOT REALLY. I have a life.

I just want the parts in their entirety, to finally finish a 14 year project. And I'll be keeping mine LHD. As that's how they're meant to be. (Servo brakes stopped them making RHD versions.)

So, anyone that wants parts, please get in touch. But I will not be giving them away. And I even have a spare splitter.

I think you might have missed the elephant in the room here.

Reshell - not a problem

Ringer - problem

That it's a ringer doesn't matter to you though, because you've bought it as a parts donor. So why the attitude?

(interested to see the results of your project though)

Edited by Alex

pictures wanted of this project!!

Well I have to sell the other 3 G40's I have spare at the moment before I get on with this project. At the same time I am building a G40 track saloon 2f with a 1.5 1w block, big valve head, and lots of other nice bits... I also have a 1341 forged engine which has just finished being run in and making 155bhp on standard manifold/injectors/pulley size in another G40. All of them genuine (except the saloon of course!) At one point I had 9 at once. I've been into G40's for 14 years, and the one I'm building is a german import shell which I've been trying to get the correct bits to finish.

As for the attitude, the one issue I have with all forums, is that it is very easy to run someone down or attack them without knowing the full facts. The listing said it was a reshell, and kudos to the seller for pulling the original listing and relisting correctly when it was pointed out. A lot of others wouldn't have been so truthful.

The way people were suggesting it was a ringer was to suggest that there was criminal intent or moving on stolen parts.

Once I have the car back and stripped down I will be selling all the surplus parts, which will include most of the body panels.

If anyone is interested, please email me!

splitter please! lol

I have found a commonly available conversion to put a big servo on a RHD MK1/2, if not a simple fit. I haven't done it myself yet because i don't feel the need, but i still might do so anyway.

And no, it doesn't use any MK2F parts.

Congratulations on the purchase, btw. Sounds like this collection in safer hands than it could've been. Legal or not, it's a credit to the previous owner to have kept it all together, and a credit to you if you're going to put them together as best they should be.

Any chance of showing it off once it's done..? 8-)

It'll be out and about!! And being driven as it should be! I may even come to a show :o

Metro parts have been used in the past - guessing you've found something totally unexpected to rob bits off though!
