I'm considering stripping out the back of my 6n for summertime, I know it's a compromise due to noise and such.

Just wondering if anyone knows what weight will be removed with:

Rear seats

Rear belts

Sub, amp, enclosure

Parcel shelf with 6x9's

Boot trim and rear cards and carpet.

To be honest I think it would be 30-40kg max. Not even a passengers worth

40ish not really worth it! my mate did it when we both had identical 1.0l 8v 6ns and it gave him about half a car lenght over 1/4 mile

I was quite surprised at the weight of all of the carpets and plastic trim.

I doubt your gonna see much more than 40kg though, and I can say the noise and rattles are terrible.

I have fitted anti vibration stuff (see pic) to all the panels to stop the vibrations but that stuff weighed around 15kg.

I'm not cutting lol. I know HOW to lighten a car (race car building) but everything on my car is reversible.

Probably not worth it then, be easier just to run with less fuel lol

Theres loads of metal that could potentially be cut out aswell. Depends how far you want to go.

The mini boys cut pillar/seatbelt mounts out (big lump of steel behind the pillar trim), headlining rails, dash rails, boot floors/wheel wells/ inner wings all sorts!

I've done this on mine, everything in the back is out, front seats changed for a pair of cobra monaco S's spare wheel out, back seats, everything boot wise, dash has come out and just covered it in audio box carpet,

"even take the shit cardboard out from under the dash" has gone, charcoal cannister has gone, only trim left in is the headlining (cos its got SUPERMAN on) and the front door cards :) even took the steering lock and ignition barrel off to save weight :p

gonna put a quick release wheel on it and I really wanna replace the sunroof with a perspex fixed thing.

Just weighed a few bits:

-cupra half leather rears. 15.5kg

-6n2 rear door cards 1.25kg

-6n2 rear seatbelts 6.5kg

Sort of the same stuff. I used RattleMatt.

What I did do was use it as a bridge between joining sheet metal.

Doing the bootlid has made a noticable difference. I am yet to complete the rear quarters, floor and doors.

After the Rattlemat I am using a foam in areas behind carpets and under seats and stuff to attempt to completely eradicate road noises etc.

Car will prob weigh a good 30kg more once it is all done

An idea would be to also become anorexic too?

thats an epic job on lightening your car but then like youve said youve got a very heavy sunroof in there, plus youve left your headlining in, so youve sacrificed all the comfort but left all that excess in...oh and tidy up that wiring lol

if your going to lighten a car then please enlighten me why your doing it on a polo??? at most your engine is going to be 120bhp so its not like its that quick anyway lol

fair dos if your going to build a car for the track but why would you start with such a heavy car like the 6n anyways and not just get an earlier polo =S

Well a car which weighs 1200kg with 120bhp is going to be much slower than a car which weighs 900kg.

At the end of the day its a cheap way to make the car faster and possibly handle better (if it's done right!!).

Not everyone has the technical ability to do complex engine mods and some can't afford to do it.

A lighter car would also cost less to run in fuel, therefore if you are on a tight budget for fuel stripping your car would be beneficial.

To answer your questions, firstly I'm doing it on a 6n as it was bought for my as a present and as a poor uni student I wanna get as much done to my car without the insurance companies raping me, when I've got money I'm gonna do an engine conversion, looking at something from an a3.

I also wouldn't say I have lost a huge amount of comfort, and the headlining doesn't weight much at all, but it may well come out at some point if i get bored as it went in before I started the weight loss.

Plus the wires have all been tidied up now.

I'm even going on a diet to help with the weight loss! :p

200kg is a huge amount! bet that things fun! ill get shot for saying that about a saxo now....

how much (if you dont mind me asking) did the perspex windows set you back? its something i would love to do, at least on the back three to start with!

I converted mine to polycarbonate windows, had them held by the rubber seals but they were too floppy and i could kick my way in (despite being the correct 4mm thickness, a mate punched a rear quarter in with one punch).

So you need to use rivets, which changes the appearance, and prevents people being able to break the glass in the event of an accident. Not much weight saved either, so i went back to glass.
