Well I'm loathed to start another of our long forum debates Mikey, but I have to say it's a little blinkered to be so dismissive about things.

I agree that we can't go around being superman and cleaning things up, but unroadworthy cars (no matter how common) are dangerous and worth being concerned about, especially as it's a problem we're not in control of. I don't mean sleepless nights, but it's a problem that we've all come close to facing at some point whether we know it or not.

I'm less faithful about karma too, I know more than my fair share of enthusiasts who've had cars wiped out by uninsured drivers and got next to nothing out of the experience except a painful passage through the claims process. And that's through no fault of their own. I don't regard uninsured drivers as my problem per se, but that doesn't mean I'm not concerned that they're out there and fairly common too.

And where's the karma when one of these cars shits a tyre on the motorway and wipes out a family? Or tries to stop at a zebra crossing and mows down a load of kids? I know the guilty party could be injured, killed or spend the rest of their life regretting what they've done, but it doesn't bring anyone back or change things for those who have to grieve. Where's the justice in that?

(Aware I'm being a bit Daily Mail here, but hope you can see what I mean)

Agree its not my problem either. If they crash into my car then it becomes my problem. I'm not the sort of person to go running to the police if I see some one doing illegal shit especially if its nothing to do with me, its just the way I was brought up probably due to the area I was brought up in but meh.

It's all well and good telling some one their tyres are dangerous, but then what? What do you do if they tell you to fuck off? Are you going to make them buy new tyres? Are you going to phone the police? Or are you just going to walk away with your head down?

I don't like People running bold tyres but I'm generally too busy with my own problems to notice or care about other peoples. If people want to get irate on the net about stuff (i've done it myself too) then that's fair enough but no need to get irate about people who don't see it as their problem, its their right to think that way just like It's your right to think the way you do

I've even been known when driving to motion to someone on their phone to put the phone down, or if they're driving with fogs on and it's clearly not foggy, they get 2x 100w H1's at their eyes - they try and see more by having their fogs on (which dazzles everyone) so I dazzle them back.

^^ I love doing that. I always flick high beams at people with badly adjusted lights, fogs on needlessly or driving with High beams all the time. Had someone with either really badly adjusted lights, or was driving on high beams behind me tonight, so i put my rear fog on

Think the worst I've seen is a learner car with the fronts showing cord on the inner edge and the woman was about to take someone for a driving test.

an ex gf had an xr2 which she let me borrow one day. failed to tell me about the slick on the front os, was a hot summer day and all of a sudden down came the rain... I came to a sharp bend at 20mph turned the steering wheel and the car went straight on.. I ended up in a ditch balanced on the front bumper with the arse pointing skywards, I could not get out because my weight was against the seat belt and it wouldn't release. old bill turned up cut the belt to let me out, fined me given points, and had to pay for recovery of the car. my gf demanded I pay for the damage I told her fuckoff as I'd already had to fork out £400 in fines and recovery and it was her fault for not replacing the tyre. she didn't seem to care that it could of happened with her and her little boy in the car! suffice to say we split, I never paid for it and we have never spoken since!

in this case , If I saw them again with the same tyre I wouldn’t say anything , If they where driving like an utter idiot and I saw them knowing about their tyres then I would simply call 101 and give them the reg as there’s far too many children around this way. And the fact they have children shocks me! – I always get people trying to race me, If my daughters in the car simply slow down and let them though. If I had bald tyres I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving it my self let alone anyone else inside.

If a driver hit my daughter on her way back from school (2 schools within 500 yards of my home and this car) i would go mental and it would be my problem which id take appropriate action on.

Mentioning it to them might save them money, Fuck money a tyre is the only thing with direct contact with the ground if its slick with no tread what’s to say they cant stop for a bunch of 13 year olds chasing each other and someone trips on a traffic island or something.

Its like when you see a baby drop their toy out the pram , its common courtesy to say excuse me heres a toy you dropped. The only difference is , that car which isn’t fit to be driving could end up in the back of you or having an accident which could have been prevented.

Coming back to the point about keeping your head down , I keep my self to my self, but as I said if I saw them again on the same tyres then id just leave it , Where as if they where driving like a idiot with the tyres on then they shouldn’t be on the road, If you can afford to put petrol in a car then you should be able to buy tyres to keep it on the road legally

Now stopping I think I've just babbled again, But it really pisses me off.

On a side note , there was a slammed 106 the other day with its break cables rubbing on the floor , I tried my best to let him know by pointing and shouting , then flashing my lights and pointing but he just sped off…. I think its common courtesy to let someone know if they have a defect which could impact on them. If I has something wrong with my car , even a bulb I’d prefer it if someone mentioned it to me.

I always flash someone when there headlights are out, really bugs me. I may well be an enthusiast, but I check tyres, lights, brakes, screenwash/fluids, oil, any defects AT LEAST once a month, usually every fortnight so I don't understand people that only think MOT time is a excuse to get everything 'roadworthy' again.

Couldn't agree more. I think some people get annoyed because the amount a car costs to run these days which is understandable. Basic knowledge of car care should be part of the driving test. I feel the checks they do aren't enough.

When did you pass your test then?

When I was learning to drive I was taught how to check the engine oil level, coolant level, power steering function, braking system function, windscreen washer fluid level and finally legal tyre tread depth

What more does the average Joe need to be taught? To be honest for modern cars anything outside of the above and even the cars handbook says "consult main dealer".

And back onto the topic of tyres. People don't care about just the tread on their tyre, they also don't care if the sidewall is cracked, has massive cuts out of it or if they have bulges coming through the wall. And the one that annoys me the most is they have no concern over the make of tyre on their car. An illegal Yokohama will grip better than a brand new Tigar. But everything these days is on a budget, even the small contact patch of rubber that keeps your 100mph 2tonne car connected to the road.

Even I don't know what budgets are on front of mine.. I was skint and never go over 75mph and there a temp measure. I think that only appeals to anything over 1.4 or so. I might be wrong but just personal opinion.

Yes I passed 2004 and did get basic checks but feel a understanding on what can happen if these fluids are low maybe would be a idea?!
