Right more works have occured..

Stripped the G40 head off the green G

IMG_3301.jpg

IMG_3302.jpg

IMG_3303.jpg

IMG_3304.jpg

Martyn gave us a hand to clean up the valves with some parrafin and a bit of scotchbrite..

IMG_3305.jpg

IMG_3306.jpg

Fitted a stubby oil filter I had in stock. I was going to use this on my other G with a sandwich plate.

IMG_3307.jpg

IMG_3308.jpg

If anyone wants a part number.

Then onto the next shittest job..

IMG_3309.jpg

Not as shit as bakers job though.. piston ring groove cleaning.

He's made a "special" tool for this now.. out of an old piston ring. He says its "the one".

IMG_3311.jpg

His office..

IMG_3313.jpg

I made a start with the worst looking valve seat.

IMG_3314.jpg

Martyn addressed the arch gap issues with a grinder. There's not much travel left on the shocks now!

IMG_3315.jpg

I guiltily went on a theivery mission. nicked the Square 108 tooth belt, vernier pulley and gen water pump (which I bought at inters (almost 5 years ago now)) from the mk2 dellorto project pile. Might as well use them!

IMG_3316.jpg

Robbed the front calipers from it too.

pulled an oil pump apart for inspection.

IMG_3317.jpg

Cleaned, inspected and re-asembled.

IMG_3320.jpg

Ordered two cap head bolts for this at 4£, then found a good pair. So wasted no time and got it fitted. I'll put the bolts into stock.

IMG_3321.jpg

Square tooth crank pulley. Less wrap around on this I'm guessing, or surface area anyway. Should be fine for the 300 bhp I'm aiming for

IMG_3322.jpg

Jim made use of old Henry..

IMG_3323.jpg

IMG_3324.jpg

Got the end seals on..

IMG_3326.jpg

IMG_3327.jpg

IMG_3328.jpg

IMG_3330.jpg

Picked up my first batch of wheel conversion studs. If anybodys after a set drop me a pm.

IMG_3331.jpg

IMG_3332.jpg

IMG_3338.jpg

12.9 tensile strength. Rolled thread, raised profile "shoulder". 65mm overall. 40mm from hub to end of thread.

I put 16 of these in Alisons box.

IMG_3337.jpg

Cleaned up a water pipe

IMG_3333.jpg

painted a pulley. Not sure what I'm gonna do about belts though!

IMG_3335.jpg

Cleaned up a sump and ground the shitty tabs off to accomodate the alternator wiring. Wish i'd done this on my 1306cc G40. I'll try p-clips under the sump bolts I think.

IMG_3336.jpg

Prepped the inlet and went straight in with the hammerite..

IMG_3340.jpg

Started painting the water pipe before remembering.. it has no plate for the ISV. Need to weld one on.

IMG_3341.jpg

Slapped some paint on the sump pan..

IMG_3342.jpg

Chucked the sump bolts in a bottle with some parrafin and bits of scotchbrite, then had a shaking session along with the rattle cans.

IMG_3344.jpg

Then it was back to the second shittest job in the world..

IMG_3346.jpg

My office..

IMG_3347.jpg

Got some paint on that inlet..

IMG_3348.jpg

and more on the aux pulley

IMG_3350.jpg

sump was getting there..

IMG_3353.jpg

Martyn was on the black, blllllllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkk!

IMG_3355.jpg

jim put in some more effort on the mk1..

IMG_3356.jpg

Webbo's ABF lump i believe. Twin 45's are planned here.

IMG_3357.jpg

pulled these out of the Green G's head

IMG_3358.jpg

went and asked about these at my local motor factors.. £9.49 each! Or he had some old stock BP8 EV's which were apparantly "cheep". Anyone shed any light on this for me?

Baker was on the gudgeon pin and ring assembly..

IMG_3359.jpg

Got the sump and aux pulley fitted

IMG_3363.jpg

IMG_3364.jpg

IMG_3365.jpg

IMG_3366.jpg

IMG_3367.jpg

IMG_3370.jpg

And that concluded last nights activities.

You know, i was abit worried when you started painting that block white but i have to say! It looks all clinically clean and that! if you can keep it like that then it'll be great! Really like that.

PM coming your way about the wheel studs.... ;)

It was a bad move really. Its already dirty and it hasn't even gone in the car yet!

Simons fault for buying white hammerite.. which is proberly my fault for getting his parts paowdercoated pink with glitter and white.. I think we triggered a theme for the Merc!

When asked later "what colour would you like your subframe simon?" He replied "pink with glitter"

:badgrin::unibrow:

I was originally going to paint everything black.. everything!

But now a theme is occuring :ninja:

As long as I can stop myself from being a tart and remind myself that this is just a laugh, things will be ok!

At least white will show up any oil leaks!

Studs arn't cheep, but cheaper than importing from the states or demon tweeks ;)

dude you can get NGK BP7EVX from ebay for about 22 quid for 4.

i think higher is colder? i know Yoof runs cooler plugs, theres a decent thread started my me on clubg40 where a few people discussed the NGK plugs over Bosch W4DP0's and W5DP0's

all my bits have arrived for the golfs suspension and steering rebuild lad, good times, gonna crack on tomorrow night, proper buzzing.

although i have to weld the bulkhead around the clutch cable, and debating over taking the dash out or the engine out.

think the dash out is gonna be the one and i can sort the wiring out as well! got the entire week off work so buzzing about being able to crack on!

and nuff work going down boys, some of the pics cracked me up

Higher the number, higher the heat rating.

I'd be tempted to run the 8s depending on whether or not your G1043 will have a higher compression ratio than your G40.

Safe, i'll have a butchers. the chap at my local motor factors said NGK were the opposite to everyone else in terms of higher number colder plug or vice versa.

£22 is not so bad though!

Dash out is definately the one. Theres fuck all to the mk1 golfs, makes them a pleasure to work on!

Good luck with the suspension rebuild! Make sure you get some snaps for me! ;)

Plenty of the wishbones.. tempted to seam weld some for my mk1, for "development" purposes.

Make sure you put plenty of copper slip on that adjuster nut on the wishbone brace, being S/S should have good corrosion resistance (A4 grade iirc), just stainless can have a tendancy to gall-up as I'm sure you know.

Had a proper slack weekend on the build front. Plenty of debauchery and general partying and not much work on my car!

Gave baker a hand with his VR head..

IMG_3379.jpg

IMG_3380.jpg

I was bagman..

IMG_3381.jpg

He slapped some hammered black in the bay..

IMG_3378.jpg

Jim grafted on his panels

IMG_3373.jpg

IMG_3371.jpg

I admired my old E30 and generally got on the beers!

IMG_3377.jpg

IMG_3375.jpg

IMG_3376.jpg

Did a trade with Phil who had bought my corrado and was "borrowing" my old E30 wheels and tyres.. £50 his way and I finally had my hands on these beauties!

IMG_3383.jpg

He still has two to finish polishing, which he's gonna do for me! So well chuffed. These are 14 x 6.5J with an offset of around ET15.

These won't be going anywhere near Alison. will probably run these on my 1306cc G40. But it frees up some 14" options for alison.

:-( this is true, dad was always repainting his bike engine because of this. Looked great against polished stainless/chrome/alloy though ;) wink wink ;)

easy to spot oil leaks and problems when they are white!!!

a good thread to read this- keep up the good work!

Oil leak = Re-paint though

better than oil leak = shit my engines dead

t cut. mint

Awesome!!

Cheers for the kind comments chaps!

Any updates on this boss :D

None.. haha!

Got a proper job, as I mentioned to you. Been having a break from the unit for a week or two. Was going to try and rush my G40 together for the polo show. However Saw no point in rushing something thats taken 3 years of work and more of hoarding. So took some time out. Real jobs suck really, doesn't help I'm commuting circa 50 miles a day atm. Looking at moving closer to my unit.. 200 yards like, which if I do will be winner! 8-)

Really need to get the exhaust fabbed on my G40 and fit the chip supplied by Andy and Pete of PPP. Hopefully I can get some ECU's apart this week for inspection and fit a chip into one of them. Then leaves me with a little bit of exhaust fab and some setting up to do.

Then the mk1 Golf needs an MOT and sorting out a few niggles, then back on Alison for a winter car!

Oil leak = Re-paint though

No sir, not on Alison it doesn't. As long as the oil is leaking at a manageable rate in a managemable way, then its fine.. this is no show car.., just pure daily slut for my planned 20 mile commute.

When I'm feeling too lazy to make use of one of the cycles that is!

Cheers for the kind comments chaps!

Ahh, well better to have a job and money ready for when you are free than have no job, plenty of time spare and no money!

No point rushing it tbh as you say, ecus...... ho wmany G40 ones you got? :ninja: Pm me ;)

  • Author

3.. which reminds me.. this is a job for this week!

I don't really have a spare though.. I reckon Martyns gonna have a G40 block off me and my spare set of Wossner pistons I somehow ended up with?! for his mk1.. soo no doubt he'll be wanting an ECU also..

Plus at £80 a go.. I don't want to be buying anymore ECU's! Unless they're standalone management for running Throttle bodies :ninja:

I think I'm getting one anyway mate, off Ad with the right chip for the spec :-) so no worries, over bore pistons you just ended up with? damn... not bad to just end up with

EDIT: Read your reply and forgot my whole reason for coming in here! it was to say studs are in, no casualties :D torqued to 80n/m with licktite on the front and just 80n/m in the back with needing to remove them when ever i replace the disks.... :-)

Yeah I was £500 lighter though when I ended up with them!

Dont even ask!

Cool glad they're in alright. I'm gonna try mine at 25 lb ft and see how they go in my mk1.

I drive hard, so will soon find out!

Handy if you can get a chipped ecu to work with your spec!

Looking good dude!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hows she going mate :-) Work still busy or have you got abit more done? :-)

Pm'ed

this thread has got to be one of the best threads on here filled with great work keep it up :-D

Cheers chaps, done nothing to Ali for a bit, got the golfie mot'd wednesday though, so should have that on the road for whitenoise next weekend all being well!

The GT is soo haggard it was a pleasure driving the golf to MOT :-) She's almost 10 years older and felt 10 years younger to drive! Was nice to drive a car without fucked ball joints, top mounts, suspension and everything else! All it needs is decent shocks and front top-mounts and it should be sorted on the handling front!

Martyn's purchased D2 shocks and topmounts for his mk1.. I want some, they look like the ones for the money! But thats 500 on shocks for a shell that is tired! But my back is more valuable than money!

Hopefully the quaife LSD group buy will go ahead on CG40, which will inspire me to get the G40 sorted out and on the track!

And theres a helios blue MK2 coupe S been waiting patiently for its day for the last 6 years!

Too many projects, not enough time and money!

..and theres a Trabant I need to be buying and I want a T4 van.. issues!

Once winter arrives alison will be needed, the work will hopefully resume before then anyhow!
