2003/53 Mk4 Golf TDi

Hi,

The time has come for me to sell my daily driver mk4 Golf TDi. The reason is that I’ve just sold my Corrado TDi and fancy a bit of a change – edging away from the VAG fold for a bit.

I bought this car in October last year as a winter daily driver. I carried out a bit of a restoration/rejuventation as the previous owner had been a bit neglectful. Since I put it on the road it has been 100% reliable and hasn’t put a foot wrong. Plus, with winter tyres on it will go through snow like you wouldn’t believe!

Anyway, here’s the vital information:

During the ‘rejuvenation’ in October and in the time since then I have carried out the following work/modifications:

- G60 (single mass) flywheel conversion

- VR6 clutch

- New cambelt

- New water pump

- New N75 and EGR valves

- R32/TT wishbone bushes

- New suspension top mounts

- New springs all round

- Bora Sport interior (same as GTTDi etc)

- Golf GTi doorcards

- New downpipe and catalytic convertor

- New front discs and pads

- New front wheel bearings

- New rear discs and pads

- New trackrod ends

- Front slide-out cupholder

- Interior light upgrade with map lights

- Remap to 128 bhp.

- Alpine CDE-BT113 headunit with Parrot handsfree and full iPod connectivity

The car is originally a Golf ‘Match’. It’s a very late mk4 (53 plate) and as such was a bit of a ‘run out’ edition – coming with some high spec stuff, such as A/C, an MFA, all round electric windows and ESP, but black plastic rubbing strips and door handles etc. The previous owner had the rubbing strips resprayed silver and fitted a steering wheel and the smoked rear lights from a GTTDi so it is essentially a GT lookalike. He also fitted some decent wind deflectors which I’ll leave on – they’re quite useful for ventilation.

Bad Points – every car has a few bad points and the only thing with this is really a few cosmetic blemishes on the bodywork. It’ll make an ideal daily driver as it’s not in show condition but it’s very presentable. There’s a scuff and small crack on the rear bumper and also a scuff on the O/S corner of the front bumper – both of these are visible in the pictures. Pretty much every panel has a scratch or mark of some description but when its clean it looks pretty good. Another thing is that the drivers door switch is temperamental so sometimes the interior light doesn’t come on when the door is opened – a common mk4 fault apparently but it’s never really bothered me. Finally, the engine makes a light ‘ticking’ noise when cold. This initially bothered me quite a lot as you hear horror stories about PD engines letting go of injectors or horrendous camshaft wear from using the wrong oil. I had to investigate so I took the cam cover off and inspected the camshaft and thankfully everything was fine – no wear and the ticking noise disappears once it’s warmed up a bit so I’m pretty confident that it’s nothing to worry about and just a sticky tappet.

So, that’s about it. It’s been 100% reliable and will make an ideal daily. The aircon blows nice and cold and I get a consistent 52-55mpg from it (I’m sad and have an app on my phone to work it out!) Tax is cheap and there’s plenty of MOT left on it. It has 4 good tyres, all with 5mm tread on and with the upgraded interior is a very nice place to sit. It drives well, handling pretty well with the refreshed suspension (R32 bushes are a worthy upgrade!) and it goes pretty well with nearly 130bhp on tap too Here’s some pictures:

Price - £2100 or very near offer. I’ve priced it at this level because I just want it gone as my new car comes on Saturday so it’ll be sat in the garage doing nothing. Golf Match’s of the same era seem to book at about £2500 so I think this is a good price, based on the modifications (all to the benefit of the car) and also the fact that its got a recent cambelt, a recent clutch, plenty of MOT and tax and won’t need anything doing at all ☺
