Rod's 1,4 8v "Chagall"

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Thought i might start a build thread with my own polo since i saw a lot of other build threads. :p I live in Denmark most of the time but for now i am at a 4 week stay in Düsseldorf (Germany) and that gives me a lot of time to work on my car cause i have (almost) no need for it down here. I have done a bit of work already so here we go:

Model: 6n 1997 ('98 model), 1.4 8v 60bhp 3 door

Already done:

Interior:

- 6n2 steering wheel mounted.

- Old seats thrown out, 6n2 GTI seats installed instead.

- Rainbow 3-way speaker set on door/frontspace and a tweeter + 2 rainbow speakers (mainly bass) in the back.

- 6n2 door panels for the back

Exterior:

- New headlights on with clear DE-lense.

- HID 6000K kit installed.

- 2 external beams mounted (21" bosch).

- A little bit of rust work here and there.

Engine:

- New cooler, thermostat and thermostat housing.

- New exhaust system from the cat and to the end.

To be done:

Interior:

- 6n2 dash already bought and ready for installation, although i need some lupo clocks from 98-99 (if anyone have those pls drop a PM). This is a huge project and i still need a few parts so will not be done right away.

- 6n GTI floor mats to be installed.

- 6n2 door panels for the 2 front doors.

- Chrome door handles for the doors.

Exterior:

- 16v bumper (ordered and getting sprayed) + the grilles.

- Foglight in the bumper, eventually those instead of the big bosch lights i got at the moment. HID's in those aswell.

- New rear bumper as there's a huge rusty hole in the old one.

- A lot of work with fixing the rusty parts of the chassis.

- Left sill (back). Someone jacked it up directly on the sill so now it's broken there. :(

- 6n2 GTI BBS (15") alloys to be refurbed and installed (Can anyone recommend a tyrebrand?). Thinking about sticking with some michelin's or falken's.

- 6n2 Hella rear lights.

- New LED's (W5W "6000-8000K") for my angel eyes.

- Automatic headlight level adjustment for my HID's.

- Eventually headlight washers aswell.

- New grille (as the one i have at the moment is pretty damaged in the mountings). Thinking of a chrome WITH badge, does anyone know where to get that?

- A good work with polishing this car, it needs it. :)

Engine:

- A hole appeared in my exhaust system between the cat and the engine so i'm gonna fix that one aswell.

- Polishing the engine, giving it a nice look.

- Eventually a new cat.

- A big cleanup in the engine room.

- Ultimate goal: Engine swap to a 1,6 GTI or 2,8 VR6.

I'll probably add stuff as i move on with my build. All kind of feedback is welcome!

Here's the car when i got it:

First problem: The thermostat (some of you might have been reading my thread about it). All liquid dropped on the freeway and this little device was the cause:

Also changed the cooler itself now that i was working:

And it were flying again! I decided to get some new headlights (which are now scrapped), got them for 40€ + shipping:

This is how it looked (i had already installed my bosch lights at that time):

Then i decided to get a HID-kit and i found 6000K as the best choice. Right ballast was easy to find a spot for but i had to search a lot to find a appropiate spot for the left one..

I later then found out that this wasn't such a good idea with all this glare that those HID's give so i decided to get some DE-lenses, unfortunately i could only find angel eyes with those... I found some headlights which i actually liked:

My dad tells me everytime that i'm crazy with that car so i decided to continue my madness. :p Out with the old seats and in with some GTI seats and door panels! At the moment i have only installed the panels in the back:

And on with the door panels:

Then the time had come for the GTI seats:

I managed to buy almost a complete 6n2 set from germany (cause our cars in Denmark is LHD so couldn't get from UK), and he also gave me the steering wheel, yay! Out with the old!

And in with the new!

There is still a lot of work to do and i actually received my 6n2 rear lights yesterday!! Of course, finding out that they were broken, so now i am gonna exchange them for a new pair, goddammit. :(

Later this week (or next week) i am gonna pick up some BBS alloys aswell:

A good work of cleaning and 4 new centre caps, and they should be good to go! :)

Feel free to give your oppinion and tips... As i mentioned before i am thinking of getting those BOSCH-lights off as they don't look as good as i imagined, although they give a STUNNING light in the dark (even without HID!). :)
