So my polo is dying! It has been awkward to select 2nd gear for awhile and on the way back from shopping yesterday something went, and now I can only select 2nd! The gear stick is very floppy and won't select any gear. I had a look under the gearbox and something has broken, it's a part that is joined to the linkages running from the gear stick that then selects the gear. Does any one have an idea what this part is and if it's replaceable? Or is it part of the gearbox as a whole?

What model? What year? What engine? Is it a rod or cable gearbox?

^^ Yeah, a 1975 Polo is very different than a 2012 one.

So answering universally.. Linkage is seperate, broken parts can be bought new or used. Chances are though it's not broken but that something has come undone.

Whoops, it's Sunday morning after all!

It's a 96 1.4 cl. From what I can see its a rod type and a corner of something has literally snapped off. It's outside of the gearbox and I can physically touch it so I hope it's replaceable, I've browsed the Internet but I can't get much luck as I have no idea what it's called

Sounds like the finger selector bit. There were some on eBay a few weeks back.

It's like a cage with a ball sitting in it that's attached to a bit of metal thats bolted to the rod that goes into the gearbox. Not my best discription I know. Chances are the rod might have slipped out of place and need refitting.

If you have a Haynes there should be a discription in there.

Don't let anyone talk you into buying another gearbox, because from how you describe this problem, it is the linkage which is at fault, if this is the case, even a brand new gearbox wouldn't make it any better.

Replacing the individual piece may or may not be the easiest answer, the whole lot in that picture is mounted on a piece of cast aluminium and that bolts to the gearbox with just two small (13mm) bolts. So if you unattach the cables from that, then you can get another linkage set from a breakers and fit that in place of yours.

thanks for your help, got a friend of a friend having a look now in his mates garage, where theres a will theres a way to avoid taking it to a garage
