if it was like 5 maybe even 10 mph over the limit its understandable, we all speed at times just not realising were slightly over the limit. but that much over the limit is really not acceptable. I've been on the recieving end of someone like you. all it takes is one tiny mistake.

yeahh my speedos way out lol, i downloaded an app on my phone called speedview so i can see how fast I'm really going so i know how far out it is now.

i changed the speedo cable yesterday but i forgot to check if its made a difference

No one has said they haven't sped, but an 18 year old doing double the limit is just too typical of the demographic.

On top of anything else you get, you can expect a huge increase in your premium too. If you get offered an awareness course (which i think is unlikely) then you will not need to delare it, and your premium will come down (unless things have changed/are different with your insurance company).

As for cameras being a joke, only people who get caught speeding and feel caught out say that. I've been done with a camera and it wasn't exactly in total plain view, and it was an unknown area to me, but still I was speeding in a 30. Simple. Rules is rules, and with the increase in the number of cars, performance of cars and reduction of the sense of drivers, I can't say they are a bad thing. They're usually sign posted, which is not a legal requirement for them to do, so there's really no excuse if you get caught. On top of this, despite what the mail, Jeremy Clarkson and others may say, speed cameras are usually a last resort after other strategies have been attempted to reduce accidents/potential accidents in a given area rather than a money making tool. So are they really such a bad thing?

I got caught doing 53 in a 30 on my motorbike.....6 points and £250 fine and an appearance at Grantham Court.

If it does go to court just act very sorry, plead that you need the car for work, that you could lose your job if you lose your licence etc etc. Just be very humble and dont mention losing it because you got cut up....just say it was a very brief lapse of concentration?!?

Hi guys , I'm 18 , 1 ncb and driving for about a year an abit

iv had a letter through off the Po Po saying that they had caught me speeding ,

i was speeding at the time due to been cut up before an geting rather annoyed , i got caught doing 58mph in a 30mph limit , but the road was two lanes and had a central reservation type thing and there was nobody about , I'm in a right state over this an iv been told that I'm going to get fined 1000pounds and i will lose my liscence ?

i know I'm such a idiot lol just wondered if anybody had been in this situation before ?

Think I'm going to be the bearer of bad news here. Presumably this is a notice of intended prosecution? In other words a letter saying expect to be summoned to a Magistrates Court because we (the Police) have spotted you speeding. As opposed to we (the Police) reckon you were speeding and here's a ticket. I think the summons is more likely because of the speed involved.

Where 58 in a 30 is a Band B fine and 6 points. Now that's based on a not guilty plea and a guilty plea should result in a reduction. Hopefully there are no other factors which would make things worse for you. A Band B fine is supposed to be about a weeks income, so you are unlikely to be getting fined £1000.

I'm still looking for something else to do with this but I can't find it at the moment. I'll post again if I can find it.

I'd agree they are an inconvenience yes. But if they act as a deterent then I won't argue. I'm more against unreasonable speed limits, or having to adhere to limits at silly times of the day )e.g. 30 on a clear road at 4 am, as an extreme example).

I've seen a camera van around there myself many times,stratford road southbound just off the robin hood island.Its a money maker spot there as many a frustrated driver have a lead foot after pissing about on that island.Nearly fell for it myself once as a golf driver was trying to race me,luckily i spotted the van,the golf driver didnt

Be carefull going down robin hood lane on the evenings as theres a big anti speeding campaign going on,once again people full throttle down there after the island.

You did well! 58 in a 30... I recently got done for 35 in a 30 and wasn't given the opportunity to take up an awareness course. It was my first offence, and received 3 points and a £60 fine. You should keep your license though, and i wouldn't get wound up about it, everybody speeds, just not everyone gets caught!

It's an extreme, yes, but here's another one. You hit a pedestrian (eg someone walking home a bit pissed wearing dark clothes who steps out on you) at 30, chances are they'll live and suffer no life changing injuries. You hit them at 40, there's a very strong chance you'll kill them. If you don't kill them, there's a very strong chance you'll cause them a life-changing injury.

I'm not a hypocrite, I'm not going to say I don't speed. I'm a professional driver, and at times, a very, very fast one. I'm not saying it's right, but here's the basis I work on:

20mph advisory: treat as advisory, unless there's a chance of kids being about (bear in mind, breakfast clubs, after school clubs, football on a saturday). If there's any chance of any of these - treat as 20mph limit.

30mph - Don't break

40mph - Don't break

50mph - Don't break.... yeah, it might have the trappings of a fast road, but there's some reason that ay not be obvious that it's not a national. Look hard for that reason and the potential risks it generates.

National 60 or 70 - Treat as advisory, do not exceed if likely to drop out of System.

My driving instructor told me years back that, if in your first 2 years of driving you are caught speeding, your license would be taken away and you would have to do a 90minute driving test.
