speeding , what should i expect ? :(

Featured Replies

My driving instructor told me years back that, if in your first 2 years of driving you are caught speeding, your license would be taken away and you would have to do a 90minute driving test.

Your driving instructors a bender haha

Its the same as anyone else except you only get a max of 6 points instead of 12

Tell me that wasn't round Derby? There's only 4 cameras in the whole place! And three of them are on the same road

no, fortunately i don't live there anymore

As for cameras being a joke, only people who get caught speeding and feel caught out say that.

I've never been caught speeding and I still think speed camera's are a load of bollocks

:)

i'm sure the majority of people are here would love them to not exist, but still argue for the sake of it.

I'd agree they are an inconvenience yes. But if they act as a deterent then I won't argue. I'm more against unreasonable speed limits, or having to adhere to limits at silly times of the day )e.g. 30 on a clear road at 4 am, as an extreme example).

For the most part they are a danger, people seeing them at the last min and slamming the brakes on. There are much more effective ways for keeping speeding down (for example, speed activated signs have been proven more effective and cost a fraction of the cost of a speed camera), but there isn't any money to be made off them so we get lumbered with more speed camera's

They are a blatant money making scheme and that is why they are bollocks. As if they don't earn enough from them the fines are being raised from £60 to £100, this won't do anything to deter speeders (if they were willing to risk a fine in the first place a slightly higher fine isn't going to stop them), its being raised to do nothing more than raise more funds for the government. They can justify this by using the old line of "speeding is breaking the law, don't speed, don't get fined," but that doesn't change the fact that there are more effective ways to make roads safer that are being over looked in favour of a money making scam.

i acctually think its right about those flashing signs ! i slow down when theres one flashing at me , didnt know anything about the 'van' parked up there but i guess now i know haha !

whats done is done though ,

I dont understand the whole hidden van thing tbh they must make a absolute killing off that stretch of road but if there was a fixed camera there hardly anybody would break it as its clearly marked and bright yellow , but they do need to make money in the end of the day but WHERE DOES IT GO?

this country is a shambles when it comes to roads

Your driving instructors a bender haha

Thats a Daily Mail argument. I actually think the glare from an unexpected flashing road sign poses a greater danger. Driving to my rents along the bendy roads in teh rain and dark, come around the corner and a stupid sign starts flashing at me. The glare through the wet windscreen and off the road was disorientating and totally unexpected, these things seem to be popping up on every stretch of road atm

They are a blatant money making scheme and that is why they are bollocks. I'm still not convinced that they are a money making scam at all, thats a little cynical (and I'm cynical!) and predictably anti-establishment argument. If they were that good at making money, why wouldn't they be on every road? Then they'd make a mint. They are generally only put up in accident black spots (next time you drive past them, half a kilometer in the direction the camera point ypu should find said potential accident site).

Now this isn't to say I agree with speed cameras, or any other of the traffic calming measures. As British drivers, we hate being told what to do and how to drive, so rebelling against speed cameras is a somewhat natural reaction for us. But speed cameras themselves are a reaction to the unsafe roads we have. I'm sure the majority of people on here are capable drivers, who drive responsibly and carefully most of the time, thus speed cameras, silly flashing signs and chicanes are an unwelcome inconvenience. What you have to account for are the smaller percentage of drivers (and this includes the OP) that are incapable of driving responsibly. If we had safer roads with people who drove sensibly, then these measures would be redundant, but we don't.

But before anyone starts quoting deaths per year since speed cameras a la Jeremy Clarkson, I'll say that those stats are unreliable. This is one of those polarising issues that makes it immune to impartiallity and more liekly to be part of an agenda. As someone who has spent a lot of hours 'manipulating' data and research, I know better than most that data and research can be used to prove/disprove what you choose, it just depends up the data you choose to use.

Theyve installed those flashing signs on the road past my house, fuck me are the blinding at night, funniest is there walkers on road ones and I've never seen anyone walking there as its a suicidal road to do it on.

As for being placed on accident black spots, some are others are blatant money makers, there are 2 in my town, on is placed a hundred yards from a set of traffic lights and 10 yards from a busy industrial estate junction, aiming towards a 20MPH limit 50yds in front of it.

The other was installed between two speed bumps. facing up a steep hill, and normally has residents cars parked in its catchment area.

The most pointless ones I've seen are the YOUR SPEED signs, i like to see how accurate my speedo, GPS, and the sign are. One is on a good visability mile straight with no entrances, junctions or other dangers. Kids now use that road as a speed track, I'm just waiting for the day we have to peal someone off the milk stand at the end of it.

I agree, some do seem poorly thought out. But thats a symptom of beurocracy and a lack of common sense of town planners

Dont think anyone planned my towns crazy traffic system.

I'm sure they just get stoned in a room with a map and write down the craziest thing they can think of to mess up everyones lives.

Anyone that comes down the M4 towards Carmarthen is greeted with one of the stupidest traffic lit roundabout setups known to man.

i have a mental note of the location of all speed cameras lol and most of them don't work in my area as they have been sprayed and no one bothers to fix them :p

mines been caught aswell- which is funny as it isnt mot'd or taxed or located anywhere near that county! what a load of bollox!

your all idiots

I live in Swindon, where the cameras have all been turned off (following a big goverment thing that proved they make no difference... or some Bullshit like that) and to be honest I think it has worked. Obviously you still have complete dickheads that break the limit and crash however for those who are sensible!

I thought that all speed camera's have to be visible (reffering to the hidden van mentioned earlier), and any temp speed traps need to be registered on a weebsite for people to see beforehand??

Swear they cant be hidden?? as this is not fair game!!

We used to pick cars up from a motor auction that had got one about 200-300 yards down the road, we had a scoreboard going until someone picked up a Porsche Cayenne.... we stopped playing after that because the sign only had two digits on. :paranoid:

So you were speeding in the rain on a poorly lit road that was dangerous enough to warrant traffic calming measures, yet you have the cheek to call a sign stupid?

These signs ain't as bright as a street light or even the headlights of an oncoming car so I don't see how you can try and claim that they are dangerous due to risk of dazzling you, if that's enough to 'disoriente' you then maybe you should go to spec savers or some thing cause that doesn't seem right me

If one of those disorientates you, imagine what a gatos catching some one on the opposite side of the road would do to you. You can try and dismiss it as a "daily mail" argument (never read it in my life) but that doesn't make it any less true, people do slam their brakes on when they spot one at the last min, I've seen it many times myself and no doubt many other have too.

They are a blatant money making scheme and that is why they are bollocks. Have you never heard of speedspike? It would of pretty much been the equivalent of putting a speed camera on pretty much every road once it was in full effect. If you want to bury your head in the sand then fine, but you can't argue that point when the governments own findings show (and MP's have also admitted) that there are cheaper and more effective ways of cutting speeding, yet we still get more speed cameras.

It's also a criminal offence to warn drivers of a speed trap up ahead, why? Surely by doing so you are making the roads safer by encouraging people to obey the speed limit? Also these mobile speed traps by law don't have to be visible or have signs up warning of them, so they are not there to slow people down, they are there to catch people speeding

Now this isn't to say I agree with speed cameras, or any other of the traffic calming measures. As British drivers, we hate being told what to do and how to drive, so rebelling against speed cameras is a somewhat natural reaction for us. I would also put you in the small percentage of drivers that are incapable of driving responsibly. Not only do you have points for speeding but also as highlighted in the first part of this post, you speed in adverse conditions on dangerous roads.

So because you have manipulated data to suit your needs, this makes all data unreliable. Ok let's use another example, you got caught speeding and it doesn't seem to of stopped you, therefore I conclude that speed cameras don't work

Hahahahahahahahahaha, you sir. Are a fucking legend. You have my made my day.

Ha! Raped.

I think the above argument is a bit irelevent. I think the way local authorities enforce speed restrictions is very reasonable I this country. If josh here gets a 3 year ban I would not call that unfare at all. These young scallywags are why my insurance premium is almost equal to the value of my car!

On a less selfish note, those nutters who choose to drive at such speed, regardless of circumstances, are a real danger to other road users and pedestrians. If you hit a pedestrian at 30mph they will be very lucky to walk away, hit them at 60mph and they will be very lucky to have another heartbeat.

Yes, I'll admit, speeding where safe is ok to a degree. But you have to be sensible about it though; if I need to slam on the anchors now when will I stop? What's the road conditions like? How fast is the other traffic going?, etc, etc.

I drive the A9 in Scotland a lot and that has been a real wake up call for how dangerous some drivers really are.

It's easy to drive fast, to stop, it's not. And nobody drives along expecting to have an accident.

Some more advice; stay calm and do not get wound up by other drivers. Frustration does cause accidents.

Sorry to be blunt, but it is the truth. Nobody is above the law.

I was going to the skatepark in Barry the other day, and the camera on the 5 mile lane has been shot. Repeatedly.

No speed cameras in my town, just LOADS of pigs.

no speed cameras within 15 miles of me just mobile vans (the worst kind of trap) and and a few traffic cops.

Was it a tuned Turbo? They usually need the best part of 440 yards to top the ton! (At Santa Pod at least... ).

  • 2 weeks later...

my mate got caught doing 55mph in a 30mph zone in his polo too. He wrote them a letter and he got 3 points and a £90 fine. he did this 6 months after passing his test.
