no no i haven't been at school, and i wont be on the phone to insurance companies asking about 200sx's because lets face it assuming i could get insured it would not end well when i think i've started to get the hang of 'drifting' and i end up backwards with a tree where the boot should be?

a car that drifts isn't something i'm too fussed about, i understand the appeal totally but at 18 as previously said it wont end well, i've been more swayed towards staying vw, with things like berg cup and such mk2 and 3 polos i think look cool and the general consensus I've got from this forum is that they are fun to drive with sorted suspension, i would love an old bmw but i know that wont happen.

Now i know this isn't a drivers car by any stretch but ill ask the question non the less, is an audi a3 1.8 any good? because i've always liked the shape of them but i have no if they are any good at all?

As I said I much prefered his midget to the mx5, again it was slow but being so old that kinda felt inkeeping, also the constant fear of death made it so much fun. where the mx5 just felt tame and a bit boring the midget gave a near constant adrenaline rush, nothing seemed to work particularly well, the peddle position was atrocious and the steering wheel felt massively oversized, but some how it just added to the driving experience

It sounds like it was one of the terrible underpowered 90bhp Mk1's? granted, these ones are best avoided but good for insurance! :).. But the 110bhp 1.6's and 130bhp 1.8's are not bad and in a light car good fun. Just like an AFH mk2/3.

The 'fan boys' that own then and the majority of the motoring press rate them because they are good and entertaining to drive. I've driven quite a few of them, on and off the track and they are great. But it does seem that you have had a bad experience in a bad 5..

By MX5 standards a midget is a terrible handling car but yes the experiences is great and you do feel more involved with it all because you probably are which is normally the case with older cars :)

I just had a go in my sisters Miget, it was fun, no question and you really get the feelling it will hold on forever.

My old dear had an Eunos import 1.6. It was quick. It was deffinatly tuned while it was in japan but god knows what!

I now own a mx5 1.6 mk1 (the 115bhp) and all i can say is FUN!

a boggo 1.6 mx-5 will do 0-60 in 9 so its not a rocket but it's not slow and is judged as one of the finest driving cars out there. however as the op is 18. he will be raped on anything fun so stick with what you go and build up no claims.

Well I've been looking at insurance, and a 200 sx with welded diff wont happen... nahh a 1.6 mx 5 is 2200 a 8v mk2 gti is also 2200 a mk3 gt is 1400 and a mk3 1.3 is 1000, and a 1.8 a3 is 1400 which i find pretty strange but hey i wont complain

now this is for unmodified cars and on a comparison site so clearly not definite by any stretch but interesting non the less

and to be honest the most appealing thing about a polo is this place, i know there are other forums for all the above cars I'm sure but i like vw's, but then i do think an audi would be pretty cool at 18, but i do have no idea if its worth it, i appreciate its probably not that great to drive or that fast etc, in the least part placed against a mk2/3 but i like audi's and am drawn towards one, and with insurance like that to me is tempting?

I know this is a bit of daft question in all as i am 18, but i am just so bored of my 6n, as a car its done nothing wrong, its been perfect to come to grips with motoring in, but i just want something that i enjoy driving, one day i'd love a golf gti, but that day is not for another 4/5 years.

I owned a 6n1 Polo for 2 years before finally getting rid of it for a Toyota Glanza V. Never looked back.

Quick and nippy, corners pretty good, reliable, fuel economy wise I drove to Wales from London and back on a single tank.

Insurance is okey as it's an import and most importers stick it down as just a 1.3 non turbo.

I've had "1L" polos for the last year now I'm selling my valver breadvan i just got a gold mk3 gti 8v, its solid, handles well ( coilovers) great brakes, it pulls ok and I'm really happy with it. the only down side is its a little bit weighty. i was amazed at the insurance 890 for the year, I'm 19 have been driving a year and have one year no claims :)

Mx5 fan boys, there are examples of these in this very thread, people who haven't even driven one going on about how they are the best drivers car ect, but that is a matter of opinion dependent on what you enjoy about driving and its certainly not some thing you can claim if you have never even driven one. I have and I gave my opinion of it, as have you. Both are valid as we are speaking from experience, but the mx5 is a victim of its own success because now every man that wants to make it look like he's a car man bangs on about how amazing they are even if they haven't even driven one. When something is talked up so dam high its hard not to build up some expectations before driving one, and the higher the expectations, the more likely you are to be disappointed if it doesn't seem as amazing as everyone keeps telling you it is

Personally I think anyone looking at mx5's should try and look past all the hype and take one for a proper test drive to make up their own mind about them before jumping in at the deep end

I think mx5s are awsome, mines got coiles and toyo r888s and it feels just like a caterham I drove, but without the acceleration. Coilies wound down and its just as scary as a 86c at speed , I must say my 1.6 goes quite well too! Nothing like the G though

I've driven a few in different guises, a 1.8 Turbo mk2 Miata, a 1.6 early mk1 MX-5 (higher power output due to no cat) and a early Eunos 1.6 so I have driven them and they are great fun and ARE a drivers car. not the fastest but tbh I couldn't give a toss about outright speed as long as I'm enjoying the drive. the fact of the matter is that at the age of 18 the OP will have a slim chance of getting a car and insurance within his budget that is classed as a drivers car.

I drove one and it didn't do a lot for me, it just wasn't my sort of car at all. I've never once said it didn't handle well but if that was all I was interested in in a car I wouldn't drive a slammed mk2 polo. I've drove a lot of cars that as soon as I had gotten home I was looking at on eBay on the off chance I could afford one, the MX5 wasn't even close to one of them

They probably do make great track cars, but I've never done or intend to do a track day. They probably can show up much faster cars through the bends, but I'd still rather be in the faster car enjoying the power. And they are non doubt 'drivers cars', but different people get enjoyment from different aspects of driving and not everyone will enjoy the same car
