Love the photos , high mileage on clock but bullet proof engine

yeh the engines are totaly solid bought it and then without doing anything to the engine drove it to italy and back in 5 days dint breakdown or struggle once only problem we had was a split in a water pipe witch we taped up thats it, now all the engine has been cleaned up given a good service and its good again, got the carb off at the moment as having a few problems with it had to replace all the pipes on it as they had become brittle and started to crack so i have replaced them and the carb has been cleaned up and fixed and will be getting put back on the car and tested this saturday, il take plenty photos and put them up here.

also got a grinder sorted to sort the rust out too, theres a large hole in the off side rear arch about the size of a dinner plate I'm trying to think of a cheap easy way to patch it as i have no way to weld a new piece in simply because i cant weld and dont know any one who does so i was thinking of maybe a fibre glass kit or maybe riveting a metal plate over it????? il take some photos of this too an put them up on saturday

Edited by Gazzer2k

Not sure about fibre glass but I would as a quick fix plate and rivet from under side and filler on out side will not be pretty but will do the job .This is not a job I would do as I am a welder ..

ok so this Saturday got the carb back all cleaned up with new pipe and the filter cleaned, the car runs better and smoother now but struggling with the the engine not idling properly its at 3k revs when idle so i have adjusted it and as soon as i lift of the throttle it dies so I'm still trying to sort that, i would of had more time to finishing it but it was 22:15 and my neighbor decided to come round and threaten to call the police so had to call it a night

has any one got any tips on fixing the hole?

Plastic bags ? 8>T that's quite big man make a template out of cardboard but with overlap of an inch and cut shape on metal then weld but if you not got welder use a rivet gun , drill same size hole as rivet into plate and car with 1inch gaps all the way round and fire in rivets , seal the edge with tiger seal etc.. It is not the best fix really needs to be welded .

You will have to try and follow the shape of the car by bashing new metal plate with hammer over a vice etc ..

This is a very rough and ready way to fix I would not do this method as I can weld and fabricate metal , we all have different skills ..

Done a good job on the carb ..

filler /pop rivets /fibre glass wont pass an mot ..and tbh they're not the strongest cars anyway so you want it safe

still having problems with this carb, any one got any opinions on the webber carbs iv been told there good???

Wow, just read through this thread, and you've got some patience! No advice on the carb I'm afraid, but no doubt someone will be along with some words of wisdom...

Yeah dude, Weber all the way. Swapped mine out on my 1.0L and it's soooo much better.

Have a look on German eBay. I picked up two for mine off there (first one had cracked on the way over...)

put a weber on mine ..its been trouble free and very simple to tune myself

make sure you get the whole kit meant for the polo so all the adaptors are included , otherwise you might end up needing to make some bits to make it work

Brilliant thanks guys if I get the full kit what would the price be like.

id say 80-100 used for a good clean complete kit

they're always in demand this time of year once peoples cars wont start in the frosty weather
