so what your saying is, one minute they are perfectly fine, i change the piston rings and boom the cams suddenly decide to be worn?

i just cant see it being that at all, i really think its more likely to be some of the sealant that has found its way into an oilway

It is most definetly the tappets as you can clearly hear them with the engine running, i noticed tonight though, i does just sound like the inlet tappets!

certainly not, I've had the belt on and off more times than i care to remember, i can time these engines with my eyes shut!

and its quiet when cold, so obviously oil related somehow

10/40 fully synth as recomended by opie oils, had thicker stuff in before and it made no difference at all

there just has to be a reason though, for it to happen randomly after my last rebuild, there just has to be a f****ing reason! ahh

Put a screwdriver to the head, then your ear to the handle - move the screwdriver tip to various points on the head and manifolds, and you should be to tell which tappet it is.

All the ones along the inlet side definetly

your saying its definetly not this and definitly that so why not try replacing the thing you think it definetly is? go from there.

Tbh the most perfect person in the world makes mistakes, without them we wouldnt progress as a race. even though you think you have done EVERYTHING perfect go double check, maybe this once it didnt go quite to plan.... :-)

The inlet tappets have their own oil feed chamber, access is via a plug under the dizzy (The outlet tappets also have their own oil feed chamber, access is via the oil pressure switch. You'll see these access points are next to another, well of course because they're parallel ons symmetrical design).

Ah thats interesting, because obviously my sender reads from the exhaust side which isnt tapping, what could be done through these access holes?

So i removed the plug and there is definetly oil in there! I pushed a long ziptie up there aswell and it hapily goes to the other side of the head

god the lift on them cams looks EXTREMEEEE!

You know you say its inlet cam, well thats back of head obviously, but do you think maybe the tap is just noise coming back through the carbs?

I cant view the video with sound unfortunatly :-(

Oh are they? i thoguth they were aftermarket ones? i do remember reading they were aftermarket, god knows if they are reground or new items mind. Maybe its just more to a point that a stock cam so i thought it looked longer.

If its re-profiled, they take the basecircle down, and blend the "ramp" into it, which probably would make it look more pointy.

I'm still thinking its the aggressive lobes, and they have finally killed the tappets, i know you've rebuilt them, but they might be actually worn beyond service life.

There reground. Piper Stage 3 iirc??

ok so my plan of action is going to be

1. try and source a full set of new tappets... (try being the main word here)

2. if this still makes no difference then try and get my hands on some standard cams and see how they sound

3. torch the car with the engine and forget it ever happened...
