Fuelling your bike carbs

Featured Replies

The only rhing thats altered are the mains, as far as I'm aware that is. Does anyone know the standard pilot jet size on cbr600s? I guess mine could have been changed before, and I've just replaced larger for larger.

Can't think that anything has perished, except the o-rings. I'll have a look at those, but I would imagine that would drain fuel, not cause it to piss out the breathers :-/

I thought I had a blockage in my return line, so I diconnected it and had it open to jar. It was pissing in there proper quickly, so i can't see much getting to the bowls at all. I'll swap mine around

42s they are.

These carbs came of a race bike, but I'm sure pilots were the same, or I'd have tried them!

What's great?

Nick: when you say breathers, do you mean the plastic pipes coming from the top? I'm not talking about mains, but pilots. It's proper rich and the plugs are stupidly black! Plus I don't need to use the choke, which is a sure sign it's too rich, especially considering how cold it was yesterday when I has her running. First turn of the key and she fired :-0 this however doesnt solve the over flowing issue. Beginning to think my 'bargain' carbs were a bit of a basket case

Its great, The info is as i was wondering which option to take

just realised, the code on the jet is "42s" not they are size 42 pluralized lol.

Forty two esses! Lol

Well mine are 38, so smaller :?

Just had carbs off my car too. They're 40s

Telling you! Must be another fault!

I know! But what!

Has anybody mounted a Facet redtop fuel pump in the tank in place of the original lift pump? or does anybody see a reason why i shouldn't do this?

I've been reading up on this and other aspects of bike carbs, and I had a proposed method in mind for a set-up I'm planning. I just wanted to see if anyone could find any reason why it wouldn't work, or anything I've over-looked.

What I'm thinking of is using a Mark3 lift pump powered using the switched live on the ignition as per factory Mark3 set-up.

Then using a Facet posi-flow pump wired in as per runforestrun's guide, only I was thinking of using a piggy-back spade connector to get around the lack of 2/3 pin oil pressure switch.

Regulation and filtering would be done by a filter king.

My thinking is that the lift pump would get around any potential issues of having the Facet pump mounted high up and away from the fuel tank.

Yeah, i used a lift pump + Facet and it was good. No need for a regulator with the peice, infact the T peice method is a lot safer.

I used my own loom/relay for them both, switched 12v feed obviously, a dash mounted switch could also be added into the loom so you can turn the pump off whilst the cars running etc, handy for draining the carbs and safety reasons.

would the lift pump not be enough, as I thought that would be a hi flow low/pressure pump? I used this setup on the black polo but that never made it on the road but the engine did run :)

My thinking was to try and get around potential fuel starvation with having the posi flow pump mounted where its not really designed to operate I though if it was requiring more effort to draw fuel up. Under load it might not be able to meet demand. The lift pump was there to ease the load on the Facet, as the Facet would only have to pump the fuel to the carbs essentially.

According to Haynes, the lift pump has a higher flow rate than the SPI injection pump, this would surely mean just the lift with a t piece return would be a good enough supply of fuel?

Regulators seem more hassle than they're worth tbh, you need good flow to carbs, not pressure

Thats handy to know!

Maybe I'm making it more complicated than it needs to be, but I'm just trying to look at any possible drawbacks.

Bike fuel pump mate, honestly

Me again!

Stripped carbs again today to find the air holes for the mains were blocked. Cleared them and sorted a few other niggly issues. However, this happened

EDB6239B-479D-4970-ABE6-A551FE338BCD-146

Thats fuel in the airbox :-( Which hole is this likely to come up from (its coming from one or more of the 4 airholes on carb 3) and why? Thought I'd cleared all blockages today, but obviously not.

She was running like a bag of shit today, despite running fairly sweet a few weeks ago. I found one of the tiny springs/pins in the float needle (tiny and sticks out the top of it, contacting with the float) was sticking 'closed' too. Remedied that, but not sure what it could effect and if it's sorted a problem or caused on :?

ffs simon buy a new set of carbs.

Silly isn't it! Thing is with another set of carbs, I may get the same problems!

Dude youve changed so much stuff. Your probs the only person on this forum who cant make bike carbs work

In know, its a joke isn't it! It's the carbs, I'm sure they're blocked in every possible way!

There you go then .. New set off carbs lol ..

Mine were litrally cleaned and slapped on ..

Float needle tapers dirty/worn?

I stripped mine and gave them a quick wash out on a parts wash and a blast with compressed air - that was all.

Had a few sets between me and my bike carb friend (even though hes into fords) and we have just ''slapped them on'' and been okay too...

For what its worth, id try another set, might set you back £50, but youll have spares then too.

  • 1 month later...

just a quick question, I'm planning on running a AAU engine in my mk1 golf on bike carbs, i have a set of zzr600 carbs and a wide range of jets to play around with ect, I've also got a bike fuel pump but one that would be submerged in a tank, what do you guys use? internal or external? I'm sure its just a lift pump in the golfs tank. cheers

Injection pumps, facet or bike pumps. It's up to you. I'm having a mare with the facet atm, so have just bought a bike pump.
