Bad points: We'll start with the bad, but it isn't all doom and gloom, keep reading and don't be too put off

• Rust under the drivers window - not too bad and could be patched with the some filler and fibreglass
• Fuel flap is slightly rusty, but I have a spare and a can of the correct paint to sort this
• Boot lid paint has gone through to primer in one corner - probably a repair by a previous owner - again paint supplied
• Engine tappety but pulls fine and works well, just sounds a little like a diesel - I'm informed that the head gasket and water pump were done at around 80k as is usual
• Clutch will need doing at some point and release bearing - spare slightly used unit supplied to sort both. I changed the cable to a solid one but have the self adjusting one too, which works just fine
• Front and rear suspension knackered but I may get around to replacing rear and maybe the front. New standard height shocks and springs will be supplied if I don't get time to do this - I bought but haven't got around to it just yet
• I've done a half hearted shite job of the heater gauge illumination - It may need re-doing if you are bothered. New bulb and a new fascia filter.
• Caliper slider pins could do with being refurbished as they are chewed from a previous owner - discs and pads are OK, bit scored but plenty of life in them - new pads and discs supplied
• Couple of dings on the passenger door and the paint is fading a little, as you'd expect of a car this age, bumpers have a few scores here and there but it does shine up quite well.

Good points:

I've owned since January and have done quite a bit to it

• New thermostat, housing and black temp sender fitted
• New front wheel bearings
• Two new driveshafts, one recon, one genuine complete with CVs, not cheap!
• Two new TCAs - so basically once the shocks and ARB bushes are fitted its had a complete new front end
• 6n wheels with 3x Goodyear and 1x Firestone tyres (or the other way around) but all with good tread
• Sound deadened under the carpet
• Good interior, carpeted under the parcel shelf and rear turrets wtih acoustic carpet and sound deadening mat (second skin damplifier pro not cheap tat), jute pad added under the carpet and boot mat
• Kenwood direct Ipod head unit (£130, front Infinity reference speakers (£££) and rear JVC 6x4s, good quality cable used. Would be nice with a sub
• Spare parts - clutch kit, new shocks and springs (Monroe, Boge and KYB, again not cheap trash) if I don't fit them, front ARB bushes, discs and pads if I don't fit them, front suspension top mounts and some other bits and pieces
• GT clocks and blue illumination. The rest of the switches are blue with LEDs
• Spare wheel with tool kit present
• No accident damage

Its had a lot of money and time spent correcting the poor bits of what was meant to be a jump in and go car.

Its a good cheap hack which will be much better once the suspension is sorted, probably even better once the brakes are done. I'm just losing interest and want to get more into my beetle, don't have space to work on it and save driving about so much in London.

Price: £600 - I paid £500 and have spent a load in parts and effort. The front end wasn't cheap to fix, I have the garage bill for fitting one of the driveshafts and TCAs. The other I fitted. More than likely I'll get around to fitting the rear shocks and springs, probably not the fronts, but I have all the required kit to do so including new driveshaft nuts.

Else it is £500 and I'll sell the suspension parts seperately - you can keep the clutch as I know it is going to need doing. Again I just don't have the time or space to do it.

Would make a cracking cheap car for someone who wants to get a bit handy or a good base for a project. Once the spares are fitted I can't see it not going straight through an MOT.
