I need to adjust mine.

And needles, and slide springs, and emulsion tubes........:

Or just use efi

If they weren't such a git to change, I'd be up for mucking about with different jets, tubes, needles etc but they're not exactly easy to work on, having to have the carbs off each time of needing to be a contortionist to get your hands around the back of the block and unscrew everything. Though I have just about managed to change mixture screws in situ

Jets are easy, can do them in less than 20 mins including carb removal tbh

weber, all on the top.

But it's removing the carb which is the arse ache. Always end up covered in fuel!

Hmm, looking at a few pictures of the carbs I have, what I thought was the idle jet is in fact the slow jet, which apparently is different. The idle jet is not removable, just a brass tube in the float bowl. So If I've drilled (by accident, see above posts) the slow jet, then surely this shouldn't affect idle of the engine.

The pictures of what I drilled, with descriptions can be found here.

In the second picture, I have accidently drilled out the jet that sits in 3 which on this picture is the slow jet, not the idle/slow jet as I though before :? Therefore I can't think what I have done would affect the idle i.e doesn't idle at all

Upon more reading the pilot jet does affect fuelling at idle. But why have and idle jet and a pilot jet that impacts upon idle fueling?

Would a too rich mixture cause the car not to idle properly. Just rethinking the symptoms (rain has called off play today) and it sounds more like an air leak problem doesn't it? Failure to idle properly and, even with foot to the floor it only just manages it. Then again, extremes of too much fuel/air gives similar results. I'm still going with too rich as the carbs were spitting plety of fuel out, and the strong smell when it would run

New jets came and have been fitted. She runs well straight off the key, so I'm guessing the idle jets were at least part of the problem, if not the whole problem.

What should happen with carb cleaner sprayed over the inlet joints if there is an air leak? Should the revs pick up or die down? If I spray it directly into the carb, it stutters a little? This also happens (a bit I think) with it sprayed on the inlet joints (rubbers to runners etc.). I thought the revs should pick up, not the other way around. Its difficult to work it out with the engine having a slightly erratic idle atm.

Anyway, we're making progress

its a good feeling when you finally get to the bottom of an ongoing problem thats done your nut in :)

  • Author

We're almost there, I hope

If you spray it directly in, it has the same effect as pouring neat fuel into the inlet tract, it'll stutter until the fuel clears.

On the rubbers though, the revs should pick up; unless it's already ridiculously rich?

  • Author

Thanks for that, so its as I though, revs should pick up if sprayed on the rubbers. Well it doesn't and I can't imagine the standard idle jets are making it too rich. So i think the minor change in revs is die to the erratic idle and I'm linking it to an air leak. Which all means my carbs/mani are sealing (and always have!) well.

Erratic idle probably isn't helped because the carbs still aren't balanced, despite your best attempts. :p

It really needs put on a balancer..

  • Author

Yeah I know :-( I borrowed a balancer though, so will get on this

Carb cleaner will make the revs drop,

Wd40 will make it pick up.

  • Author

Aha, really? Well then, maybe I do have a tiny leak after all. I'll spray a bit of WD40 in there and see whats what. Don't want all that dirty residue all over the engine if I can help it!

Its fine mate i sprayed shitloads of wd over mine the other day, it clears up fine. Could alwaysbchuck some carb cleaner over it afterwards

  • Author

It's all going to get a good clean anyway so its not really a big problem

I'm out of ideas now. Carbs are here's correctly and balanced. Running +10deg advance on the timing and still it won't run when warm/hot. Leaving it to idle leads it to eventually stutter and die. Again under load the same thing is happening.

Fuel starvation?

  • Author

Hmmm, possibly. I have noticed that the butterfly on cylinder one was fouling one of the jubilee clips holding the carbs to the runner, meaning at wide ope this cylinder isn't opening as much. But I can't imagine that would kill the engine. Not sure how to check for fuel starvation

Ypurs is probably running better than mine! Just ran 22 seconds at santa pod ffs!

Oooft! Thats awful. How come?

A few reasons mate. Having major problems!

Tell me about it. This thread any use? Will you get home ok?
