What about one of these:

AWD, very green, very economical/efficient (even 1hp/ton goes a long way) massive wading depth, good in all terrains, runs on grass and water.

The engineering behind the new Range Rover is outstanding, given how much of a struggle it is to develop a car for one discipline let alone several, with the performance level, and off road capability it has, and still conforming to latest emissions regs, and all from a British company- I tip my hat. This beats BMW and Porsche, which I regard as two of the best automotive engineering companys in the world.

If you can look out for the open days around JLRs offroad experience, really gives you a new respect for the WAG wagons!

I'm not getting upset, unlike a lot of people I enjoy my job and I'm proud of what I work on and understand the efforts behind cars as apposed to people sat on a computer saying its shit who have literally no idea, the funny thing is a lot of performance is limited by regulations such as emissions, the 5.0 SV8 is easily capable of over 700hp

How many cars can you drive over the desert or wade to nearly a meter and can also do over 180mph? Aswel as being comfortable.

On about the branding, it's just fashion, like iPhones arnt the best but people still pay a premium price.

How many cars can your misses drive over curbs or wade through big puddles outside the school gate and can also do over 180mph inbetween sitting on your bumper at 90mph? Aswel as being comfortable and intimidating to other road users.

Image is everything, and the latest LR's have a bad one in the eyes of a big chunk of people thanks to the type of people that buy them and the way in which they are used. It can be the best car in the world but if its got an image like that then that becomes irrelevant. It's not doing LR any harm tho, the fact its seen as a penis extension or a status symbol attracts exactly the right sort of people, that image is selling a lot of cars for them

I still prefer spending my time working on brand new cars and driving them around as apposed to a lot of other jobs haha, I cba to get involved, people just wanna argue on here

Already got a couple of horses Yoof (well sister has), they're fun but they have all sorts of problems. More dangerous than the average barn find on top of a cliff, hard to control, terrible ride quality, tendancy to smash their garage up, high maintenance and you never know quite how they'll run from one day to another.

The Range Rover is far more competent, if that well edited marketing production is anything to go by, though i'd like to see a more ballsy version.

In this country though, their competence seems only really to satisfy an unpopular customer. Maybe i'm not being fair, maybe the next time i see one it won't be being driven by someone who shows complete disregard for anyone outside the vehicle. But like Audis, they're perfect for such drivers, so the manufacturer harvests their own tarnishing reputation.

I think it could be the best car in the world Nick, but not in my world. We don't have deserts or canyons in Milton Keynes - wherever they went to film that, it wasn't the school run in Swindon was it.

The UK market for JLR is tiny...everyone seems to be forgetting this

no matter where its sold it doesn't change the market the car is aimed at nick. for example china is now a massive market for LR, not because of it's rocky and baron terrain but because of the sudden explosion in wealth and people wanting to flaunt that wealth

But the brand attracts the same type of person around the world, regardless of where they are. People don't buy a landy for its offroad ability in the majority of cases, despite it being an awesome offroader of otherwise. It's fine, there's nothing wrong with that. But I can't help feel its a bit of a shame that the company that made the legendary Defender (with it being British an added bonus), though now a little outdated, panders to big pricks with small dicks. To me it waters down the credentials of the company. And don't get me started on the Evoke! It's the same as when Asotn thought it would be a good idea to make a smart like car, and to a point that 4 door porsche (though I do like the look of that). I feel the same too with the number of models VW make. I have big brand loyalty toward the marque, but now its becoming less iconic and more like all other cars manufacturers, producing one of each type of car. They may be brilliant as an engineering project, but a car brand is more than that to me. It's simply business

The company panders to the market, this might be blokes with tiny winkies - but they're the ones paying for them. Aston have and will continue to have problems with fleet emissions, they're being forced to re-badge Igos so they can continue to trade and make awesome cars, if they didn't, they couldn't. Similar to Land Rover, they wouldn't be able to make the legendary (and ancient) Defender (and work on it's replacement) if the bread and butter WAG mobile doesn't roll off the production line and sell.

JLR as a whole are not far off top of their game currently, and sticking a big fat set of Vs up to the Germans and Japs, the British car industry fights back, with a little help from those Indians...

Yeah it is true! Why do you think manufacturers produce hybrids, it's bollocks to please regulations and the government.

You learn your customers and create a product to attract them, it's like saying anyone who buys baseball caps will hang out in town starting fights.

The profit margin on a range rover is huge, it's a great achievement for a UK company, people should have more pride.

Get the feeling if people could afford these things their opinion may differ tbh. But as they can't they are narrow minded they are suited to an opinion that suits what they can have.

For me it's a principal thing, and no change in circumstances changes that.

In my tree-hugging times when i was a teen, i looked forward to driving but i said i'd never own a car with an engine size bigger than two litres. I couldn't legally drive and wanted to so badly, anything under two litres was more than good enough.

Quarter of a century later, having been a car dealer for a period and a petrol head all the way along, i've still never owned a car with an engine bigger than two litres. I can afford an engine measured in cubic inches, but it isn't gonna happen.

That's why i tune my carbs for economy.

Nick people are entitled to their opinion, and whether you like it or not it's an opinion that seems to be shared by a hell of a lot of people far beyond the react of club polo. LR are blatantly pandering to a specific group of people with their products, and this is blatantly working very well for them, but this specific group of people are the sort of people that give a product a bad name (as mentioned by some one earlier Audi has the same kind of issue to an extent as do a lot of other companies). is it good to see a British company do well? course it is, does that mean i have to like their product? dose it fuck

would i buy a landrover if i had the cash? not a chance, but then i'm not the target audience. i like cars not fancy people carriers, i like old mechanical cars that i can work on, if i came into a big enough amount of cash i would just end up buying more old cars rather than one new one, that's the sort of person i am.

you seem to be getting offended because people don't like the landrover for what ever reason, but what you need to understand is that this car isn't aimed at everyone, it's aimed at premier league football players, company exec's and chealsea house wives (and suits them perfectly), it's not aimed at the sort of person that drives a 20 odd year old slammed polo through choice.

I could have afforded a different car with the amount I've pumped into old ones for similar reasons guy has stated. I don't want to own a big 4x4 for several reasons. One is that I think it's selfish due to the limited resources they require to build and run and also the vast amount of space they take up on the road, and emissions (which may be low, for a big car). I also have no use for such a massive car. When I was growing up we had a mk2 polo for a family car, for 4 of us. So cars don't need to be so big at all, jut used more efficiently and I continue to believe that now. Though I don't rule out a larger car in the future before that bites me on the arse! But I'd never drive anything so obnoxious as a flashy landy. Sorry to those who think it's jealousy issue, but it's not.

Moral of the story is, the deeper your pockets, the more your opinion matters. At least to those people trying to sell you something anyway...

Being interested in cars is never about the politics/ecomentalism for me, it's all about the engineering challenges - which I think is why the new RR interests me, even though I am unlikely to ever own one!
