caught the end of an advert for (i think) the new volvo the other day and head some thing about it having the worlds first pedestrian air bag. so now when some dip shit trys to test darwins law by walking out infront of you, not only do you need a new bonnet and windscreen but also the cost of replacing the outside air bag. normal air bags ain't exactly cheap to replace so some thing like this will more than likely be silly money, and for what? air bags can kill you inside the car never mind one that big on the outside, surely it would do less damage to them if they just hit the windscreen which is pretty soft anyway once it gives way anyway

oh i just got a job at the Marmite factory in Burton, so i feel compelled to withdrew my previous statement and now declare my undying love for it x

Yeah man, they're properly funny, look like half a life raft on your windscreen!

GTR and a few other cars have pneumatic bonnets so when you hit someone the bonnet pops up to meet them, supposedly reducing injury. The flying B on a Bentley also retracts if you hit it hard enough (you can tell what I used to do at work) try and find one and test it out!

All this is great until it fails or happens in the wrong circumstance, a brand new GTR almost got written off when someone nudged a towbar on another car, just so happened to crush the front impact sensor, deployed the bonnet jet packs, super duper smash your interior to bits air bags & skits, and locked the ECU out apparently (i.e. the car got the hump), try explaining that to your insurance.

Most, if not all modern cars have worse visability than older models, indirectly dictated by crash regs. The Honda Jazz and Nissan Micra (both arguably built for the older generation with a greater need for visability) are crap compared to a fish tank like Mk1-Mk2 Polo! However I'd choose the newer car in a crash. New XF without a reversing camera is an utter idiot to park, a small van would be easier! Can't put a price on style though

Surely it would do less damage to teach people that car + speed + pedestrian = pain/death...

Hitting your head on a laminated windscreen will hurt MUCH more than an airbag. It's not always the pedestrian's fault, either, and the airbag throws the bonnet upwards which stops impacts with the top of the engine. As with the GT-R, it's a ballache to repair, but if it saves someone's life (even if they're at fault) then surely it's worth doing?
