mk2 golfs are probably one of the best cars to have really low.

my old mk2 was wound down as far as the coilovers would allow (apparently -120mm but probably more like -100mm) and running 195/45/14 tyres. Needless to say the wishbones actually took chunks out of the road itself . Speedbumps were impossible.

As were some multi-story car parks...

Couldn't agree more, I had 175/50/13 no helpers and a hell of alot more threads to go lower bit then id be beached, got a mk3 golf now and it's creeping towards the floor currently

I'm about 90 down on 14's .. Now i've got my new engine in, Downpipe catches. So going sensable hieght and using decent coilovers so i can actuall drive and get power down lol

I see people turning against lows.....

What people are saying now is what i have been saying for ages. Whats the point in lowering so much you cause damage and cant drive the car to its full potential, or anywhere at all without a broken spine. I like my standard height. I dont have to bother about going over things and its nice and comfortable. I will be lowering it, but by a sensible 35mm using H&R springs just to get rid of some of the body roll.

I lowered mine because I saw how low f1 cara are and thought mine would be as quick as one and handle as well if I lowered it that much

Actually, getting the stance right, and going lower, can make your car faster. Because 1) the less air under the car, the more aerodynamic it is. And 2) rake equals drag; front higher and the air is trying to lift the car, front lower and more pressure is on top of the car as vacuum is generated underneath. So it's a handling/stability:speed balance.
