Cooling system pressurising too much

What do you reckon the likihood of Waterpump is though?

I sat idling for about 20 mins the other day and don't even think the fan cut in?

Unless its because it's not hot by sensor or stat?

I'm going with HG or cracked head...

Just moved the car, engine running less than a minute and was hissing relieving pressure after that.

Did smell a tiny bit like diesel fumes too.

Anyone know where I can buy a DIY HC tester?

Thanks for help anyway people,

Just read about a million threads with the same issue and symptoms, including changing waterpumps, rads etc etc.

Common thing seems to be HG failure between cyl 1 & water jacket.

Will try a HC sniffer.

Anyone ever used that "k seal" stuff?

Would it be worth banging some in to see?

Ye i used K-seal for sealing a pin hole leak and a cracked thermostat housing.

I'm sure I've seen something advertised recently that "guarantees" to seal it, but not sure if it was ECP or GSF

For the £7 odd it costs I might wang some in :)

Yeah cheers nige found them eventually was just searching the wrong thing! :)

Sounds similar to the symptoms of my 6n2.

It turned out to be a hole in the thermostat seat in the coolant flange.

The needle of the thermostat had worn a hole in the seat over time so it didnt have anything to push against as it was getting upto temp and opening thus causing a restriction. The only way out for the coolant was to go out the top of the header.

A quick and simple replacement for a fiver.

Careful with the 'wood screws' on the flange, they are easy to strip if they are over-tightened and will require a complete new housing to sort.

I believe my stat bolts into the front of the block - unsure.

If you drive gently and lower rpm/boost the coolant lasts much longer before needing topping up.

Really tempted to chuck some "k seal" in lol.

Hahahaha.

Reviews of this k seal stuff seem okay? Better than that of radweld anyway

Someone was telling me that they had started using it where they work, not sure who that was tho

JCB?

K-seal seems to seal even fucked rads.

also makes finding leaks easier as it leaves copper stains.

Been reading up on it loads; just seems too good to be true almost

Kseal:

Update:

Real gentle driving, off boost and not going above 2500rpm, coolant sitting on the maximum after a run and no warning on startup, header tank still "hissing" but not throwing any out I don't think.

Borrowing a block tester/combustion leak tester tomorrow - should help see if any HCs in coolant suggesting HG or cracked head

Lad I bought it off is convinced its the waterpump..

He said it was pressurising so he changed the head and HG and still did it, dont think he had the head pressure tested but two bad heads would be pretty unfortunate? And I know a new HG isnt a guarantee of a seal.

Sat in traffic for ages this morning and temp gauge was reading like 70 degrees.

Sometimes driving (often when giving it a little bit) the temp fluctuates 75-90 degrees, never hotter. General running it stays at 80ish.

I have a combustion leak tester to try later, that will tell me if theres HCs present in the coolant, suggesting a cylinder leak into the cooling system.

Iv drove near 200 miles this week without topping it up, just keeping lower RPM and off boost..

I think it could be the pump, just weird that it doesnt overheat at idle, unless the gauge just lies, or its just not hot by the gauge. May well be I'll go get in car now and it will want coolant from pushing it out in traffic maybe!

I know diesels dont run as hot as petrols, just thinking a bit harsher driving = hotter areas of coolant = higher pressure build up = faster rate of loss?

No?

Yeah ?

You tryed just wacking a hose down the pipes to flush them out ? see if there is anything blocking it

  • Author

Not really tried anything yet mate, not had chance, work is busy! Might try a flush out and then a vacuum fill

Right. Found 5 mins.

Engine warm, coolant warm.

The leak test fluid is blue, you replace the coolant cap for the tester, the gases in expansion tank react with the fluid dependant on what's up.

The fluid turns yellow if there is a leak present, can also turn green on diesel engines.

Stuck it on..

After a minute or so..

Looks green to me..

So looks like a combustion leak to me.

Whether its HG block or head is the next game haha.

Thanks for help

Is the turbo water cooled on one of these?
