Featured Replies

Hey guys. Having big problems with my engine.

Its smoking fuck loads and I'm not sure what the problem is.

At first it was kicking oil out, but seems to have cleared up now.

Its a polo gti ARC block and polo AFH head.

Doesent overheat, has problems starting though.

over fueling ?

When revving like that, what's your AFR saying? Whats your base timing set to with the vac advanced disconnected (and the tapin pipe blocked obviously)

haven't set the timing properly yet, and its overfuelling.

i was thinking maybe the heads moved? the afh needs fatter headbolts dont it? so its possible?

Fuck, thats really bad. Thought we were talking about smoke on a much smaller scale.

Youve got blue/black and white smoke all in one.

i know mate. its fucked.

I'm not sure whats actually broken. surely you couldnt get that from rings? it dont look like burning oil to me. looks like coolant is mixing or something? what can i check for?

also, my slim starter is FUCKED grrrrrrrr

Getting any fluid mixing? In cold weather you'd expect some white smoke but that looks very excessive and not entirely white

Also are you sure your starter is fucked? I tried two known good ones on mine and both would struggle if it was at a certain place in the cycle when you tried to turn it over, turn it and would really struggle to turn it, flick the key off and on and it would spin it over easily. Good earths can help this too if that's what your getting

i will go and take a video of starter.

I'm not sure if mixing, how would i check?

Have a look and see if your oil is white and your coolants full of oil

The head has a location pins though so it shouldnt really have moved, but it could be that i cant remember if it has two pins or just one.

Glad mine didnt smoke like that when mine was done, its not unheard of for these engines to be smokey though.

Could be a load of things combined or just one thing, mixture being far to rich combined with burning oil.

Get the head off, make some sleaves for the head bolt holes or drill and tap your block.

Check valve stem seals, ensure head gasket is fitted correctly.

Check your coolant system for any traces of oil or leaks around the head.

Get the ignition timing set up and carbs set up nicely.

I'm sure you'll sort it eventually, just dont rev the fuck out of it constantly at times like these, take it easy.

Video of starter.

For once it actually fired however. Normally itl just keep doing that.

Had jumpleads on earlier and no different, also tried putting a jumplead from the battery to engine as an earth and no difference.

How do your plugs look Eric? Set your base timing to ~7 with no vac connected.

Get your AFR around 13:1 under wide open as a starting point and aim for 14.7-15.7 ish cruise. 14.5 odd light accel

AFR is about 13 when cruising and even richer on what. need to order some jets. I'm thinking 145

How does it drive though? Anything richer than 10:1 on mine will start spluttering and just spitting fuel out lol, iv got all the test kit man you're just far :(

drive down one weekend? lol

it pulls okay, its a bit boggy from the richness I'm guessing, but

the mk3 fly kinda balances that out.

sounds lovely though. such a fierce roar!

Does seem to sound well,

Plugs will definetly be black lol, oil and excess fuel.

If it was me, id;

Do a simple comp check

Check fluids for mixing

Could also check the inlet valves through the ports for obvious signs of oil

From actual experience, fucked valve stems causes continous slight smoking, getting worse as the revs increase,

Fucked rings caused continous light smoking whilst running, that then got considerably worse when booting it and then lifting off the throttle, which causes high cylinder vacuum which pulls the oil up through the fucked rings

A HG failure caused considerable smoking all the time, with white/black smoke. That also got a lot worse when lifting off the throttle or blipping. This also causes large amounts of condensation and white gunk under the cam cover , fill hole.

Good look mate

Yeah that's what mine used to do but if I flicked the key it would turn over fine. It was like if the engine had stopped right at the compression part of the stroke it would really struggled to turn it but then flicking it off and on after it had turned slightly and it would spin up easily. Harris has my old starter on his 1.6 and says it turns over nicely with a strong battery and decent earths

when lifting off the smoke stops. its under throttle it smokes a conciderable amount, as you can see in the vid.

will do more checks and testing tomorrow if its dry.

and guy, my battery is under a year old, so I'm confident about that, has plenty of juice (tried 2 alts to make sure its charging)

tried a jumplead as an extra earth and no difference. i am however going to upgrade the earths soon.

wheres caretakerplus aka david? haha. help!

Baha, that's after car being left a couple of days too, starts fine if been runningzz

Mikey modded one I think, of you do a search he posted a thread about it but can't remember the details or even which starter he used. He put the internals from one starter into another tho

It's in the FAQ man :)
