1.6 16v ARC/AFH hybrid issues. help?

Yeah halfords special.

The battery is good, but i think it may not have the oomf for this engine. It is for a 1.3 with lower compression afterall.

Its interesting how much better the starter was with an extra 70 amps shoved up its arse.

Maybe i should get a battery closer to 500 odd?

I could then also upgrade earths. It made no difference connecting a jumplead as an earth tho.

Also interesting, i have dropped my needles to their lowest setting to lean it out a bit. much less smoke now.

Everyone at work who has smelled the smoke has said thst it stinks of fuel rather than oil.

I think its these drilled jets giving me most of the grief. But its wierd how they didnt on the 1.3

Is there any that you can send me nick? I will pay mate.

I'm worried about bore wash too.

U should see the puddle on cyl1 with no spark plug in. Tis mad. Carbs need balancing bigtime aswell

I bet the AFH will be flowing twice as much air than the 8v lol

Especially with the 1600cc's

Fuck yeah man!

The early starter would probably get hit by the crankshaft if you removed the sidewall to allow for it. And you'd spill about 78 litres of oil on the road per mile.

The smoke, well it aint oil or coolant. Did you forget to put the jets in or something..?!

The AFH head is too tall for the skinny bolts. There should be locating pins on the block to ensure the head is in the right place, you need to use them because the valves are close to the top of the bores. If you haven't caught your valves then it can't be far out.

The head bolt issue is that being longer, the spring rate is lower with the same torque. Longer bolts are more stretchy, basically. So you'd wanna torque them to 40nm primary instead of 30nm to make up for this.

I have always suggested putting the internals into the older 1.4 block which has all the correct threads engineered into it, and i always will recommend that. People persist in using a GTi block and persist in having problems..

This is the route i want to go down as the head will match and wont have issues with drilling out avy block ..

Only thing thats making me doubt this route is you've said somewhere that the crank pully has to be one off a 1.4 16v golf as the afh/avy one does not fit the casing correctly ?

Or you could just use the avy crank pulley that's already bolted to the avy crank, not sure why you would have any need to use any other unless you crank doesn't come with one.

Iirc the late afh crank pulley is the same as the avy but check first to be 100% sure cause its been a while since I pissed about with them. I have a video somewhere showing the difference between the right and wrong pulley being put on the avy crank

so the avy internals in the afh takes the avy pully without any problems ?

Sits correctly etc and is wide enough for cambelt with no chance of slipping ?

^^Correct^^

Dropped needles to the bottom yesterday to lean it out slightly.

Smoking less now but still alot.

Smokes alot less when running hot aswell.

Try running it up to temp, and with a peice of paper held about an inch away from the tailpipe exit, run the car at like 2.5K for about 30 seconds.

It might leave a nice film of oil on the paper, and or water.

Just an idea!

^^Correct^^

YEEYYYY, you've made me and another jim a very happy person ..

Eric ... I reckon u could get hold of a cheap afh block and do the same tbf mate ..

Avy crank pulley is the same width as the afh one

This is what i was saying all along

Jammy got it in his head from unknwon sources that they were different :S

Only difference is the size of the locating key meaning that the afh pulley would have play if used on the avy crank. not sure if its all afh pulleys tho, I have a feeling the later ones may be the same as the avy but not 100% as its some time since I was pissing about with them

yeah i was just confussing myself tbf . thought that the avy crank in the afh block would need a pully off a golf 16v or something.. apperently not :S

Few things here.

Crank pulley, some are keyed differently and it's not just the locating key, earlier 16v ones won't centre properly, so it's like it needs a spigot ring. The bolt isn't really adequate. The locating key is the main thing though.

Just ensure you have a match. Most AFH won't fit an AVY. Not all AFH engines are the same, many parts cha.he'd over the years.

You don't need an AFH block. A 6n 1.4 8v block is the same, still has the thread for the AFH relay pulley. Check condition of it before you buy though, as unused thread goes rusty.

Crank fitting of the blocks ate all the same. Oil pump housings are not though, 8v ones won't give clearance for 16v pulleys, butin some cases this is just minor casting that can be filed off but you have to ensure it's a high capacity pump if not a 16v one. Others the seal is too big. In the case of using all AVY etc stuff then it doesn't matter.

Really? Blimey! I thought that was relli high.

Could cyl 1 be caused by a leaky HG leaking oil into the bore sealing it

if your head gasket was leaking the compression would be lower wouldn't it?

if it is causing it to be higher then whats the oil pressure like with that force coming from the cylinder! does your oil smell of petrol?

Sort your fuelling and report back man.

If it's burning oil he's not gonna be able to set it up very well. The lambda probe gets covered in shit and will just give an inaccurate reading.

If my shitty battery worked id be able to report back lol. Fitted 145 jets now

bump it

took all plugs out today and put them ontop of the engine in their leads.

getting spark on all four.

heres a video

so, clean plugs up, shove back in, and its still misfiring?!?! wtf man. cant work this shit out.

Still not running properly. Put the colourtune on cyl1 which is the suspect cylinder, and it was firing.

Loads if smoke, lots of misfiring and alot of fluid wether it be oil or fuel on cylinder one.

Heres a video.
